Colchester is gearing up to be the pick of the bunch of East Anglia as it celebrates its   first Buttonhole Day on Tuesday 20 July.
Free floral buttonholes will be handed out all over town during shopping hours on Tuesday 20 July so everyone in Colchester town centre can sport a colourful reminder of the town’s bid to be the winner of this year’s prestigious Anglia In Bloom competition.
The competition judges will be in town on that day – and Colchester in Bloom organisers are determined that the judges will be “buttonholed” by hundreds of floral sprays proudly worn by Colchester town shoppers and business people.
Free buttonholes will be available to make or take from the Mercury Theatre foyer between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday 20 July. Small donations greatly appreciated for Colchester in Bloom.
firstsite will be hosting a buttonhole shop counter in the art organisation’s Short Wyre Street project space and retail shop, where everyone can drop in to pick up a free floral buttonhole, swap one they made earlier or make one in the shop from supplied flowers.
Other firstsite staff will be stepping out in Short Wyre Street on the day, offering shoppers free buttonhole flowers in support of Colchester’s bid to win a medal in the Anglia In Bloom event.
Pam Schomberg, Chair of Colchester in Bloom said “ the aim of Buttonhole Day is to urge as many people as possible to wear a buttonhole, so that wherever the judges look they can see the whole town is behind the Anglia in Bloom bid.”
Said Pam: “Everyone in Colchester is invited to join in – whether at school or work, out doing the shopping or walking around the town – and wear some flowers whilst hopefully having fun and making the town a brighter place for a day.
â€œEvents like this raise the profile of the town; With thousands of flowers Colchester looks like a town that is going places, a place where people want to visit as flowers lift morale.”
Judith Merritt, firstsite’s Head of Learning, said: “We are proud to be playing our part in telling the world what a great place Colchester is. We are doing our bit to beautify our town with flowers to make Colchester the pick of the bunch for this prestigious annual award!”
