Consort of 1 – Catch that catch can
Sun, January 29 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Catches, canons, dances and divisions from Playford’s England.
In 1750s London John Playford, a Royalist keeping his head down under Cromwell’s interegnum, published not only the first few editions of his famous “English Dancing Master”, but also a tutor book for cittern, a collections court court ayres, of psalms, tutor books for cittern and lyraviol, and” Catch that catch can” – a collection of secular canons on which out of work church singers couold perhaps sharpen their musical wits. The circular nature of this composition style lends itself to looping, as do the pieces in the slightly later division violin.
Lizzie Gutteridge performs melodies from the 12th-17th centuries performed on historical instruments including fiddles, bagpipes, shawms, percussion, recorders, pipe & tabor, curtal and chalumeau. By combining sounds of the past with some 21st century technology new light is thrown onto ancient music, peeling back, then building up the layers of anything from Medieval dances to Playford divisions.
Tea & coffee will be served after the performance.
