“The variety of moods and nuances in this concert is simply astonishing – it’s surely one the best jazz albums of 2021 and a vital addition to Mo Foster’s five-decade-long recording history,” wrote Let It Rock of the ace bassist’s In Concert CD.
Mo Foster has assembled six of the UK’s most sought-after musicians for an exciting new project celebrating the music of major jazz composers.
These include Gil Evans, Michael Gibbs, George Gershwin, John Lewis, Jaco Pastorius, Eddie Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Carla Bley, Jimi Hendrix and Charles Mingus, and material spanning Freedom Jazz Dance, Gone Gone Gone, Footprints, Sing Me Softly Of The Blues, Little Wing and Django – plus some of Mo’s original compositions.
After forming seminal 70s prog jazz/rock group Affinity (managed by the late Ronnie Scott), Mo’s career developed into one of the most prestigious of any contemporary bass guitar player, one which has seen him work with Jeff Beck, Gil Evans, Phil Collins, Gerry Rafferty, Van Morrison and the London Symphony Orchestra, while simultaneously establishing himself as a much sought-after and highly respected session musician, record producer, composer, solo artist and author.
Mo has been a fan of Gil Evans’s music since the mid-60s, when he first heard his masterful collaborations with Miles Davis – Miles Ahead, Porgy And Bess, and Sketches Of Spain.
In 1983, Mo was invited to tour with the Gil Evans British Orchestra, which consisted mainly of luminaries from the UK jazz scene, including John Surman, Henry Lowther, Stan Sulzman, Ray Russell, John Taylor and John Marshall.
Gil’s sound world left such a lasting impression, that when he assembled this new band, the sound Mo was aiming for was ‘Gil Evans in Miniature’: structured, with beautiful harmonies and melodies, and with room for great solos.
In Jim Watson, Chris Biscoe, Nic France, Ray Russell and Corrina Silvester, Mo has selected some of this country’s finest jazz soloists, who between them have worked, toured and recorded with Manu Katche, Peter Gabriel, Katie Melua, Sting, Patti Austin, Lalo Shifrin, George Russell, Bill Withers, Mose Allison and Yazz Ahmed.
Mo Foster (Bass Guitar), Chris Biscoe (Reeds), Jim Watson (Keyboards), Ray Russell (Electric Guitar), Nic France (Drums), Corinne Silvester (Percussion).
