As the first female prime minister and one of the most controversial post war politicians in Europe, Margaret Thatcher and the consequent ‘Thatcherism’ reached into all aspects of lives – from welfare to industry, from education to philosophy.
What is perhaps less known is that it was in Colchester, Essex that she secured the early stages of her political career. As an Oxford chemistry graduate, she wrote extensively from her lodgings in Cambridge Road, and joined the borough’s Young Conservative group.
