TALINKA

Sun, May 28 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

We’re delighted to welcome back Talinka, currently on tour to promote their follow-up CD, Rainbow Over Kolonaki.

Talinka creates a new, very distinctive sound that explores the unique and diverse journeys of four British musicians: Jenny Bliss (a baroque virtuoso), Yaron Stavi (one of Europe’s leading bass players), Gilad Atzmon (an internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist with an affinity for ethnic sounds) and his wife Tali Atzmon.

The music is at times haunting, connecting with deep, moody jazz standards and a new international form of World Music. In the process it touches many bases, with its wide-ranging and evocative arrangements, while Tali’s perceptive and intelligent lyrics enhance the compositions.

The outcome is a sonic adventure, and the unusual choice of instruments and combination of personalities creates an amalgam of past and present, East and West. A natural continuum between ethnic, jazz, tango, folk rock, free improv and Early Music, transcending musical boundaries.

“This is exotic otherworldly music with one foot in 50s small band jazz, one in slightly hazy folk rock and a toe in classical music. It is all about atmosphere, drawing pictures and conjuring a smile in the listener,” commented reviewer Marc Higgins, of Fatea magazine.

The new CD includes interpretations of classic tunes such as She Moves Through The Fair, If I Should Lose You, I’ll Being Seeing You and Scarborough Fair, plus original songs penned by Tali.

As Jazzwise critic Andy Robson, wrote when reviewing the group’s debut CD: “There’s an airy spaciousness about Talinka’s music, a music that is never far from the taste of tears.”

Tali Atzmon (Vocals), Gilad Atzmon (Bass Clarinet, Soprano Saxophone, Accordion, Guitar), Jenny Bliss (Viola da Gamba, Baroque Violin, Flute, Vocals), Yaron Stavi (Double Bass).
“Every now and again you come across a jazz album which dispenses with all the usual features and starts afresh: instrumentation, form, melody, harmony and soloing protocols are all reworked here with simplicity, depth and maturity.” – Sarah Chaplin, London Jazz News

“Tali is an amazingly soulful jazz singer, whose voice captivates while the music weaves a magical spell on the listener, drawing you in. The album is full of delicate touches, wonderful melodies and interesting changes, which always hold your attention.” – The Progressive Aspect

“An album of beauty, no matter which way it is looked at. Strident, powerful, and one that preoccupies perfectly. ‘Rainbow Over Kolonaki’ inhabits mood with authenticity and delight.” – Liverpool Sound & Vision
