SUMMARY:Tim Noble & Sue Webster: Love and Hate at Firstsite
DESCRIPTION:Noble & Webster have created a remarkable group of anti-monuments in their 24-year career\, mixing the strategies of modern sculpture and the attitude of punk to make art from anti-art. \nTheir work derives much of its power from its fusion of opposites\, form and anti-form\, high culture and anti-culture\, male and female\, craft and rubbish\, sex and violence. \nIn this presentation\, eight light sculptures by Noble & Webster illuminate areas of the Firstsite building with pops of glimmering colour. \nThis series of light sculptures reference iconic pop culture symbols represented in the form of shop-front-type signage and carnival shows inherent of British seaside towns\, Las Vegas and Times Square. With the aid of complex light sequencing these signs perpetually flash and spiral out messages of everlasting love\, and hate. \nPlease note\, that this exhibition contains works including flashing lights and contrasting colours across the building. For further information please speak to a member of staff. \n  \nAbout Tim Noble & Sue Webster \nIn 2009\, Noble & Webster were awarded Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Art at Nottingham Trent University in recognition of their contribution to contemporary British Art and their radical influence on younger generations of artists. In 2007\, they were awarded the ARKEN Prize at Arken\, Museum of Modern Art\, Copenhagen for outstanding contribution to the international scene of contemporary art\, in the same year their critically acclaimed project Polymorphous Perverse at the Freud Museum was nominated for the prestigious South Bank Prize. \nSince their first solo show in London\, British Rubbish in 1996\, Noble & Webster have enjoyed international recognition with solo exhibitions at Rockefeller Plaza\, New York\, 2008\, The Freud Museum\, London\, 2006\, CAC Malaga\, 2005\, Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, 2004\, P.S.1/MoMA\, New York\, 2003\, Milton Keynes Gallery\, UK\, 2002\, Deste Foundation\, Athens\, 2000 and The Chisenhale Gallery\, London\, 1999. DESCRIPTION:Arpita Shah’s Nalini explores motherhood\, migration\, heritage and the connections between generations through the stories of the artist\, her mother and her grandmother.\n\nDeveloped across India\, East Africa and the UK\, the photographic series grew from Shah’s desire to understand more about the experiences and relationships of the women in her family.\n\nThe exhibition brings together 26 photographic works alongside family photographs and personal objects including dried flowers and traditional saris. Its title comes from Shah’s grandmother\, Nalini\, meaning ‘lotus’ in Sanskrit\, with flowers recurring throughout the work as the artist explores family\, femininity\, memory and cultural identity.\n\nNalini runs at Firstsite until Sunday 4 October 2026.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. DESCRIPTION:Duncan Grant: Worlds Through Desire brings together artworks\, stories and poetry from different generations to explore the ways LGBT+ people have sought friendship\, community and intimacy across changing times and technologies.\n\nAt the centre of the exhibition are drawings and paintings by Duncan Grant\, including work connected to the period he spent on a Suffolk farm with his then partner David Garnett during the First World War.\n\nMore than 35 drawings and paintings by Grant feature alongside contemporary works\, with the exhibition looking at the different places and technologies through which people have found one another\, from galleries\, bars and public spaces to online games\, social media and dating apps.\n\nWorlds Through Desire runs at Firstsite until Sunday 8 November 2026.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
