SUMMARY:Tim Noble & Sue Webster: Love and Hate at Firstsite
DESCRIPTION:Noble & Webster have created a remarkable group of anti-monuments in their 24-year career\, mixing the strategies of modern sculpture and the attitude of punk to make art from anti-art. \nTheir work derives much of its power from its fusion of opposites\, form and anti-form\, high culture and anti-culture\, male and female\, craft and rubbish\, sex and violence. \nIn this presentation\, eight light sculptures by Noble & Webster illuminate areas of the Firstsite building with pops of glimmering colour. \nThis series of light sculptures reference iconic pop culture symbols represented in the form of shop-front-type signage and carnival shows inherent of British seaside towns\, Las Vegas and Times Square. With the aid of complex light sequencing these signs perpetually flash and spiral out messages of everlasting love\, and hate. \nPlease note\, that this exhibition contains works including flashing lights and contrasting colours across the building. For further information please speak to a member of staff. \n  \nAbout Tim Noble & Sue Webster \nIn 2009\, Noble & Webster were awarded Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Art at Nottingham Trent University in recognition of their contribution to contemporary British Art and their radical influence on younger generations of artists. In 2007\, they were awarded the ARKEN Prize at Arken\, Museum of Modern Art\, Copenhagen for outstanding contribution to the international scene of contemporary art\, in the same year their critically acclaimed project Polymorphous Perverse at the Freud Museum was nominated for the prestigious South Bank Prize. \nSince their first solo show in London\, British Rubbish in 1996\, Noble & Webster have enjoyed international recognition with solo exhibitions at Rockefeller Plaza\, New York\, 2008\, The Freud Museum\, London\, 2006\, CAC Malaga\, 2005\, Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, 2004\, P.S.1/MoMA\, New York\, 2003\, Milton Keynes Gallery\, UK\, 2002\, Deste Foundation\, Athens\, 2000 and The Chisenhale Gallery\, London\, 1999. DESCRIPTION:Arpita Shah’s Nalini explores motherhood\, migration\, heritage and the connections between generations through the stories of the artist\, her mother and her grandmother.\n\nDeveloped across India\, East Africa and the UK\, the photographic series grew from Shah’s desire to understand more about the experiences and relationships of the women in her family.\n\nThe exhibition brings together 26 photographic works alongside family photographs and personal objects including dried flowers and traditional saris. DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. DESCRIPTION:Sun Cutter aka Kevin Pearce is buzzed to announce the follow up to his 2022 debut\, an Album of the Week on Germany’s Radio Eins which also charted in Apple Music’s Top 10 in two different album categories. Chock-a-block with soul and folk-infused indie-pop\, Jupiter- sized choruses\, and yearning\, cinematic balladry\, Sun Cutter 2 is a lament to turbulent times\, beginning with a rallying call to shake it off and rise above it all. “All together we will stand and fight the darkness that has taken up our lives” Pearce sings on opener Union\, which has been playlisted by Radio X and has also found love on Mark Radcliffe’s 6 Music show. \nAccompanied by Gale Paridjanian (Turin Brakes) on sax\, Cecilia Fage (Matt Berry & the Maypoles) and the Stagecoach Children’s Choir\, the song is particularly poignant for Pearce since it features backing vocals from his close friend Simon Holliday\, the soundman for Stereolab and Mercury Rev who passed away prematurely last summer. \nOther collaborators on Sun Cutter 2 include Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell on ‘Mud Leaf’ and Michael J Sheehy on ‘The Spectacle’\, the latter nodding to Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle\, albeit with one eye on modern media clickbait and doom-scrolling. \nStylistically\, sonically and emotionally\, Sun Cutter 2 covers plenty of ground\, offering hints of The Beatles\, Leonard Cohen\, Pink Floyd\, Cat Stevens\, Ennio Morricone\, Neil Young\, The Flaming Lips\, Massive Attack and Low\, with a shot of gospel for good measure. \nHe also recently released the educational synth-pop album\, The Sound of Science\, with members of I Monster \, as well as Sci-Fi Ballads for a Lost Generation on UK curio and oddities label Castles In Space.
