SUMMARY:Tim Noble & Sue Webster: Love and Hate at Firstsite
DESCRIPTION:Noble & Webster have created a remarkable group of anti-monuments in their 24-year career\, mixing the strategies of modern sculpture and the attitude of punk to make art from anti-art. \nTheir work derives much of its power from its fusion of opposites\, form and anti-form\, high culture and anti-culture\, male and female\, craft and rubbish\, sex and violence. \nIn this presentation\, eight light sculptures by Noble & Webster illuminate areas of the Firstsite building with pops of glimmering colour. \nThis series of light sculptures reference iconic pop culture symbols represented in the form of shop-front-type signage and carnival shows inherent of British seaside towns\, Las Vegas and Times Square. With the aid of complex light sequencing these signs perpetually flash and spiral out messages of everlasting love\, and hate. \nPlease note\, that this exhibition contains works including flashing lights and contrasting colours across the building. For further information please speak to a member of staff. \n  \nAbout Tim Noble & Sue Webster \nIn 2009\, Noble & Webster were awarded Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Art at Nottingham Trent University in recognition of their contribution to contemporary British Art and their radical influence on younger generations of artists. In 2007\, they were awarded the ARKEN Prize at Arken\, Museum of Modern Art\, Copenhagen for outstanding contribution to the international scene of contemporary art\, in the same year their critically acclaimed project Polymorphous Perverse at the Freud Museum was nominated for the prestigious South Bank Prize. \nSince their first solo show in London\, British Rubbish in 1996\, Noble & Webster have enjoyed international recognition with solo exhibitions at Rockefeller Plaza\, New York\, 2008\, The Freud Museum\, London\, 2006\, CAC Malaga\, 2005\, Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, 2004\, P.S.1/MoMA\, New York\, 2003\, Milton Keynes Gallery\, UK\, 2002\, Deste Foundation\, Athens\, 2000 and The Chisenhale Gallery\, London\, 1999. DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. With a whopping ten Edinburgh Fringe Festivals under his belt\, including his 2019 hit show The Game of Life (nominated for Best Show and Best Joke)\, Ivo has a bumbling charm that snares audiences of all ages.  \nOn TV\, he’s appeared on Have I Got News for You\, QI\, Mock the Week\, The Last Leg and Live at the Apollo. He’s quizzed with varying degrees of success on Pointless\, The Weakest Link\, House of Games and Mastermind\, and co-hosted Dave’s British as Folk in 2021. He’s earned his parents’ respect with appearances on Radio 4’s The Now Show\, The News Quiz\, Just a Minute\, Ivo Graham’s Obsessions and the drama Unite\, and has shoehorned Swindon Town references into many an episode of 5 Live’s Fighting Talk and BT Sport’s The Football’s On.  \nIvo is a cult favourite among podcast fans\, thanks to memorable appearances on Quickly Kevin and Off Menu\, plus his own Gig Pigs\, a podcast celebrating live music with longtime friend Alex Kealy. 2023 saw Ivo competing — energetically if not successfully — on Channel 4’s Taskmaster\, and making bold (and arguably greedy) intrusions into the world of theatre (with his show Carousel touring to critical acclaim) and club night producing. His book\, Yardsticks for Failure\, published in May 2025\, recounts these and other adventures/calamities. Ivo returns to the Edinburgh Fringe this year with a brand new stand-up hour\, Orange Crush\, plus further theatre and club night offerings. \nKelly Convey (MC)\,is an ‘in-your face and reassuringly confident’ (Chortle) comedian who is not one to mince her words when giving audiences an insight into what modern women really think. While her outspoken and forward-thinking musings may go against the grain\, ‘there’s a winning authenticity to her material’ (Chortle) that is refreshing and relatable. Kelly Convey is no doubt\, one to watch. Kelly has no filter when it comes to her opinions on sex and society\, sharing in her hilarious wholehearted performance that will make you feel like you’ve known her for years. With a face like butter wouldn’t melt and a mouth like a white van man\, Kelly brings a side-splitting and strangely refreshing mix of feminine and ladette style to subjects’ women rarely talk about in public. As seen on ITV2’s The Stand Up Sketch Show. Kelly can be seen regularly supporting some of the biggest names in comedy on the road\, including Alan Carr\, Russell Kane and Joanne McNally.  \nKyrah Gray\, comedian\, actress and presenter Kyrah Gray began her comedy career in 2019 and has been making waves on the circuit ever since. Kyrah has secured impressive gigs across the UK\, and in 2023 she graced the prestigious O2 Arena stage as part of Mo Gilligan’s Black British Takeover. She has also supported Axel Blake\, Tom Davis\, Ziwe\, Guz Khan\, Judi Love\, Romesh Ranganathan\, Celeste Barber\, Jamali Maddix\, Russell Kane and others on tour.  \nPeter Rethinasamy was born and raised in Belfast to a Malaysian father and Irish mother\, Peter is a comedian with hard hitting\, punchy jokes and hilarious tales of growing up in Northern Ireland. Since he started performing stand up\, he has reached the semi-finals of the Laughing Horse New Act Competition and won the London Comedy Store’s King Gong Competition.
