DESCRIPTION:Arpita Shah’s Nalini explores motherhood\, migration\, heritage and the connections between generations through the stories of the artist\, her mother and her grandmother.\n\nDeveloped across India\, East Africa and the UK\, the photographic series grew from Shah’s desire to understand more about the experiences and relationships of the women in her family.\n\nThe exhibition brings together 26 photographic works alongside family photographs and personal objects including dried flowers and traditional saris. Its title comes from Shah’s grandmother\, Nalini\, meaning ‘lotus’ in Sanskrit\, with flowers recurring throughout the work as the artist explores family\, femininity\, memory and cultural identity.\n\nNalini runs at Firstsite until Sunday 4 October 2026.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. SUMMARY:New Face for Leprosy Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This October\, the New Face for Leprosy exhibition comes to Colchester Library for a free\, month-long public exhibition exploring the lives and experiences of people affected by leprosy. \nThe project was conceived in 2019 by Emeritus Professor Diana Lockwood to challenge some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. \nWorking with photographer Tom Bradley\, the project visited Lepra’s programmes in India and Bangladesh\, meeting people affected by leprosy and recording their stories as they dealt with the physical\, social and emotional impact of diagnosis. \nBradley’s portraits aim to present the people photographed\, first and foremost\, as individuals\, challenging some of the images traditionally associated with leprosy and showing people living independent\, fulfilling lives. \nAlongside the photography\, the Colchester exhibition will feature artefacts from Lepra’s archives\, looking back at the organisation’s history and its work throughout the 20th century to improve the lives of people affected by leprosy and develop new treatments. \nThe exhibition is free to visit\, and no booking or ticket is required. \nTwo special events will also take place during the exhibition\, including a talk on Lepra’s history on Wednesday 21 October and a children’s storytelling session on Friday 30 October.

DESCRIPTION:**Please Read Full Description Before Submitting Your Order** \nPlease Note: This Communal Raku Firing Session is held at Cuckoo Farm Studios .  \nLed by Peter Jones with support from Makerspace Technician Ed Dan — we supply all the Raku glazes\, materials and fire — you just need to bring your ceramics!  \nIMPORTANT NOTES:– Booking for the course will be closed 5 working days prior to the session date– A minimum of 5 attendees need to sign up in advance for it to go ahead– If cancelled\, members will be informed and refunded– Otherwise no refunds or transfers– Attendees must be aged 18+– We provide an optional additional Raku Club – Hand-building session for those needing support on how to hand build clay objects suitable for Raku firing. See here for dates .– You will be working outside\, so please dress appropriately– Vegan soup\, sourdough bread and drinks provided. Feel free to bring your own snacks.– Raku firing is a rapid process\, only a few objects at a time will be able to be fired; this means the session will be extended over the whole day– The process has limits in terms of object size and suits objects that are not too big\, a size of H200mm vase form is approximately the largest that can be managed safely \nABOUT RAKU: Raku is a rapid low-firing process that is inspired by the traditional Japanese Raku firing. Western-style Raku involves removing pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat around 1000 centigrade and placing it into containers with combustible materials such as sawdust. Once the materials ignite\, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colours in glazes and clay bodies.
