SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

SUMMARY:Jane Eyre
DESCRIPTION:A Mercury Production \nOne woman’s fight for a life that is worthy of her courage\, and a love that is worthy of her heart. \nOrphaned as a young girl\, the passionate and sensitive Jane longs to escape the clutches of her cruel aunt. \nFreedom beckons when she is offered the job of a governess in the house of the brooding and secretive Mr Rochester. \nAs intrigue turns to attraction\, Jane finds herself drawn in by Rochester’s mercurial charm. But when the truth finally comes out\, she will be forced to choose between the man she wants\, and the woman she wants to be. \nNearly two centuries on\, Charlotte Brontë’s groundbreaking story is as thrilling and relevant as ever in this bold production directed by 2025 RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award-winner Lily Dyble\, based on Sally Cookson\, Mike Akers and the original company’s trailblazing adaptation.

SUMMARY:New Face for Leprosy Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This October\, the New Face for Leprosy exhibition comes to Colchester Library for a free\, month-long public exhibition exploring the lives and experiences of people affected by leprosy. \nThe project was conceived in 2019 by Emeritus Professor Diana Lockwood to challenge some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. \nWorking with photographer Tom Bradley\, the project visited Lepra’s programmes in India and Bangladesh\, meeting people affected by leprosy and recording their stories as they dealt with the physical\, social and emotional impact of diagnosis. \nBradley’s portraits aim to present the people photographed\, first and foremost\, as individuals\, challenging some of the images traditionally associated with leprosy and showing people living independent\, fulfilling lives. \nAlongside the photography\, the Colchester exhibition will feature artefacts from Lepra’s archives\, looking back at the organisation’s history and its work throughout the 20th century to improve the lives of people affected by leprosy and develop new treatments. \nThe exhibition is free to visit\, and no booking or ticket is required. \nTwo special events will also take place during the exhibition\, including a talk on Lepra’s history on Wednesday 21 October and a children’s storytelling session on Friday 30 October.

SUMMARY:Lightstreams - Mercury Theatre\, Colchester
DESCRIPTION:Lumenis Theatre presents Lightstreams by Mary Mazzilli\, a play inspired by real-life testimonies exploring migration\, family and the choices people face during times of crisis. \nMaurice and Hermia are a married migrant couple who have made their home in the UK. Maurice works in an elderly care home\, while Hermia struggles with motherhood and caring for their two-year-old son. She finds friendship with Darya\, an older resident of the care home who is also a migrant. \nWhen a global crisis forces Maurice to choose between his family and living at the care home where he works\, the couple’s relationships and the life they have built are put under pressure. Four years later\, with further restrictions facing migrant care workers\, they are forced to consider the choices they have made. \nLightstreams is performed in the Mercury Studio on Thursday 8 October 2026 at 7pm. The running time is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and age guidance is 14+. \nAn optional post-show Q&A will follow the performance\, discussing migration\, social care\, inclusion and representation in theatre and the arts.
