SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

SUMMARY:Against the Tide
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to grow up by the sea today? \nFrom ambition and creativity to isolation and inequality\, explore intimate photographs and firsthand accounts that document what life is really like for young people growing up in coastal Britain. \nAbout the exhibition \nDocumentary photographer Polly Braden and journalist Lisa Bachelor spent more than a year travelling to coastal communities across England\, working closely with young people aged 16–25 using photographs\, film and personal stories to explore their lives. \nCreated as part of The Guardian’s Seascape series\, Against the Tide looks beyond the negative portrayals to reveal a more complicated picture of coastal Britain today. \nAcross Tendring\, Weston-super-Mare\, Scarborough\, Grimsby\, Southend\, Portsmouth\, Whitehaven\, Rhyl and Blackpool\, Polly’s photographs bring us into the lives of a generation growing up in some of the most deprived and often-forgotten places in England. \nAlongside accounts of isolation and lack of opportunity are expressions of resilience\, ambition and hope\, and a clear message: coastal towns are not just sites of decline\, but places of creativity and possibility. \nYoung people involved in this exhibition have created their own photographs\, exchanged ideas with peers and shared their experiences with UK policymakers\, showing how creativity and personal stories together can help inform decisions about coastal communities beyond words and numbers. \nWhat to expect \nDiscover intimate portraits\, honest first-hand accounts and a close-up look at the everyday lives of young people growing up in coastal England. \nPolly’s photographs are paired with the words and experiences of the young people she met\, creating a layered portrait of places that are often overlooked or reduced to stories of decline. \nThese artworks reflect both the challenges and strengths of coastal communities. Young people speak about education\, work\, mental health\, belonging and opportunity. \nThey also share stories of friendship\, creativity\, resilience and pride in where they come from. \nAbout Polly Braden \nPolly Braden is a documentary photographer known for her intimate\, long-term collaborations. \nHer work focuses on overlooked communities and social issues\, and her distinctive style combines quiet observation with deep empathy. \nPolly believes art can do more than tell stories. It gives people a chance to speak for themselves\, encourages empathy and starts conversations about issues that matter. \nWith special thanks to Attwells Solicitors\, Seán Kelly\, and Catherine for their generous contribution towards this exhibition. \n

SUMMARY:Ashes to Ashes\, Lust to Dust
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Casey is dead! Or at least his love life is… \nJoin us as we congregate at the hole-y Church of Homosexuality to remember a life gone too soon. With a eulogy befitting of such a degenerate: filthy\, vulgar\, and camp beyond belief\, this is not a funeral you are likely to forget any time soon. Performed by the only person up to the task\, himself\, Ashes to Ashes\, Lust to Dust\, is an all-singing\, some-dancing celebration of self-deprecating humour and an exploration of confidence and self-worth against a backdrop of the 21st Century gay dating scene. \nIn less than hour\, you will get to hear all of the funniest (and most embarrassing) stories of Daniel’s life. From terrible attempts at flirting to questionable hookups\, there’s a little bit of something here for everyone. But\, in and amongst the vulgarity\, is a real heartfelt message of learning to love yourself again and overcoming shame and self-hatred. \nWill you take away some profound message that will change your outlook on life? Eh\, maybe. Will you laugh until your sides hurt? Almost certainly. \nColchester Fringe Festival. Performance venue: Headgate Theatre (Rehearsal Room). \nAge Suitability: 18yrs+ \nSensitive Content: Contains distressing or potentially triggering themes\, Scenes of a Sexual Nature\, Strong Language/Swearing\, More Information \nMore Information: Please Note: This venue has a No Late Entry Policy. \nTicket Price: £9 \nBooking information.

SUMMARY:Royal Ballet Live: Manon
DESCRIPTION:In the seedy underbelly of 18th-century Paris\, money is king. \nNothing is sacred – even love itself can be bought for the right price. \nA native of this hedonistic underworld\, Manon is caught between twin desires when she falls in love with the student Des Grieux. \nSteadfast and devoted\, he offers the possibility of an honourable life. Yet\, the riches promised by the world of Parisian society remain tempting… \nManon’s inner turmoil and struggle for survival lie at the devastating heart of Kenneth MacMillan’s 1974 adaptation of Abbé Prévost’s novel. \nIn this signature work of The Royal Ballet\, MacMillan’s nuanced understanding of human psychology makes for an unflinching look into the moral degradation of Manon’s Paris\, while all its decadence and decay are brought to life through Jules Massenet’s score and Nicholas Georgiadis’s designs. \n*Timings subject to change

SUMMARY:Mitch Benn is the 37th Beatle
DESCRIPTION:Mitch Benn is the 37th Beatle combines Mitch’s Scouse upbringing\, his love of music\, and a lifelong obsession with Liverpool’s most famous sons in one show. \nMitch Benn was born in Liverpool in January 1970. Three months later the Beatles broke up. Coincidence? Yes. \nMore than 60 years on from the release of Please Please Me\, Mitch once again explores the enduring legacy of the Fab Four and shamelessly milks his own (incredibly tenuous) connection to them. \nMitch Benn is the 37th Beatle is a glorious mix of spot-on Beatles parodies\, trivia and an endearingly personal account of his own claim to the title of ‘The Fifth Beatle’. \nColchester Fringe Festival. SUMMARY:Sheep! Μια ιστορία για το πού ανήκουμε
DESCRIPTION:A play about flocks and belonging\, told by a sheep who doesn’t know how to belong after she was sexually assaulted. To find her way back into the herd\, she weaves an off-beat comedic tale of sheep who are born\, loved\, and eaten – asking for it\, having such cute lambs – and go to space in search of the lost connection. \nSheep! is a dark and hilarious exploration of the hard feelings one goes through after a sexual assault\, told through the extended metaphor of sheep. A powerful\, weird and wonderful monologue that invites you into joy and resilience\, into the flock of soft\, fluffy and vulnerable sheep. \nWritten and performed by Jenni Nikinmaa\, a Finn living on a remote Irish island whose artistic works make hard-hitting points so gently it’s like being hugged by a sheep. Directed by Sarah O’Toole\, sound design Jack Cawley\, lighting design Órla Kelly-Smith. Dramaturgs Michael West & Hugh Farrell. Production funded by Galway Theatre Festival & Galway County Council. \nIf you are nervous about attending because of the theme or audience participation\, you can get to know the show beforehand via our audience guide. The guide includes details of the show and supports those who want to see the show but are worried if they can. SUMMARY:Boudica & Me: I’ll Share the Fire but Not the Ashes
DESCRIPTION:Rebekah Wallace-Brown returns with I’ll Share the Fire But Not the Ashes—a deeper\, brasher exploration of Boudica’s history and the raw reality of modern womanhood. \nShe unpacks who Boudica really was: the flogging\, the rebellion\, the survival. Then she brings it home—to menopause as a sacred forge\, to claiming boundaries\, and to the stubborn act of getting back up. \nThe ashes are not trauma. They are what she earned by walking through her own fires. She shares the flame of resilience freely—but the wisdom of what she’s survived is hers. \nExpect history\, humour\, and unflinching honesty. You’ll leave feeling seen\, challenged\, and maybe a little bit on fire. \nColchester Fringe Festival. SUMMARY:Wait\, What is This?
DESCRIPTION:Wait\, What is This? is a fast-paced comedy written entirely in rhyme. Created and performed by Lydia Keating and John Harper\, the show began life as a five-minute rhyming sketch performed at cabaret nights in London\, Paris and Tallinn. Audiences kept asking for more — so naturally\, the pair wrote an entire 50 minutes of chaos. \nBlending clown\, physical theatre and rapid-fire rhyme\, the show begins innocently enough with a playful demonstration of rhyming words before spiralling into an increasingly absurd world of marital role-play\, counselling sessions\, medication adverts\, mistaken assumptions and ever-shifting realities. Just when audiences think they understand what is happening\, the story joyfully pulls the rug from under them and heads somewhere entirely unexpected. \nAt once playful\, ridiculous and strangely clever\, Wait\, What is This? delights in language\, theatrical invention and comic surprise. \nIn rhyme\, the show might best describe itself like this: \nCome\, have a gander at our comic two-hander!\nBrimming with raunchy\, riotous rhyme\,\nA plot so chaotic\, you’ll lose all sense of time.\nTangled twists meet metered bliss\,\nYou’ll leave gasping: “Wait… What Is This?” \nLydia Keating and John Harper met in 2022 while training at the International Theatre School of Jacques Lecoq in Paris and have collaborated ever since. Their previous show\, Clownfishing\, was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and toured venues in the UK and Tallinn\, Estonia. \n*Please note there is no lift to access the top floor of Three Wise Monkeys. There are five flights of hand-railed stairs to reach the top floor with rest opportunities between each flight. Also\, their licensing does not allow anyone under the age of 18 years of age to be in the venue past 9pm. Please consider this when booking.
