SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

SUMMARY:Against the Tide
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to grow up by the sea today? \nFrom ambition and creativity to isolation and inequality\, explore intimate photographs and firsthand accounts that document what life is really like for young people growing up in coastal Britain. \nAbout the exhibition \nDocumentary photographer Polly Braden and journalist Lisa Bachelor spent more than a year travelling to coastal communities across England\, working closely with young people aged 16–25 using photographs\, film and personal stories to explore their lives. \nCreated as part of The Guardian’s Seascape series\, Against the Tide looks beyond the negative portrayals to reveal a more complicated picture of coastal Britain today. \nAcross Tendring\, Weston-super-Mare\, Scarborough\, Grimsby\, Southend\, Portsmouth\, Whitehaven\, Rhyl and Blackpool\, Polly’s photographs bring us into the lives of a generation growing up in some of the most deprived and often-forgotten places in England. \nAlongside accounts of isolation and lack of opportunity are expressions of resilience\, ambition and hope\, and a clear message: coastal towns are not just sites of decline\, but places of creativity and possibility. \nYoung people involved in this exhibition have created their own photographs\, exchanged ideas with peers and shared their experiences with UK policymakers\, showing how creativity and personal stories together can help inform decisions about coastal communities beyond words and numbers. \nWhat to expect \nDiscover intimate portraits\, honest first-hand accounts and a close-up look at the everyday lives of young people growing up in coastal England. \nPolly’s photographs are paired with the words and experiences of the young people she met\, creating a layered portrait of places that are often overlooked or reduced to stories of decline. \nThese artworks reflect both the challenges and strengths of coastal communities. Young people speak about education\, work\, mental health\, belonging and opportunity. \nThey also share stories of friendship\, creativity\, resilience and pride in where they come from. \nAbout Polly Braden \nPolly Braden is a documentary photographer known for her intimate\, long-term collaborations. \nHer work focuses on overlooked communities and social issues\, and her distinctive style combines quiet observation with deep empathy. \nPolly believes art can do more than tell stories. It gives people a chance to speak for themselves\, encourages empathy and starts conversations about issues that matter. \nWith special thanks to Attwells Solicitors\, Seán Kelly\, and Catherine for their generous contribution towards this exhibition. \n

SUMMARY:Art Show by Nick Mair with Stella Davis
DESCRIPTION:Nick Mair returns to Level Best Art Gallery in Colchester this November for his second exhibition at the gallery\, showing work created in collaboration with Stella Davis. \nNick chooses the subjects for the pictures\, generally drawing inspiration from natural history\, before working with Stella to interpret them through painting. SUMMARY:Wonderful Wednesdays - Action Hero: A Song and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Pay what you can afford  \nDoors open 7:30 pm\, Show starts 8 pm \nThis show is for a seated audience\n\nDuration: 60 minutes\n\nAction Hero are preparing something for the audience. A song and dance. \n\nIts no big deal. Just a little something. A collection of memories\, musings\, colourful costumes\, light entertainment\, comic relief\, dancing\, really easy stuff\, really good fun stuff. To help us all get by. To get through the day. To get through the week. To get through the year. To get on with it. Without a fuss. \n\nYou’re in very safe hands\, we’ve done this many many many times before. \n\nIn a Song and Dance\, a performer is lost in his own repeating anxiety dream\, trying to stay on topic and keep the show on the road. As he gradually loses the plot\, distracted by the ghosts of previous shows & his own unfeasible life story\, the show starts to unravel. He competes with himself and his intrusive autobiography as he wrestles to keep everything on track\, to keep the dances coming\, to keep himself to himself. \n\nA Song and Dance is a comical and slightly disordered show about masking\, performing and ‘putting on a show’.\n\nPress quotes \n\nthrillingly funny and strange…Beckett’s hip\, pop-culture savvy descendants\n–	Time Out London on previous work\, The Talent \n\nI have never seen a show from these artists that didn’t make you sit up a little straighter and want to peer a little more closely\n–	Lyn Gardner\, Stagedoor\n\nAbout Action Hero \n\nAction Hero create artworks that explore what is it to be human now. From stage to page to audio to immersive interaction\, Action Hero create structures for people to experience alternative ways of being together. Previous projects have toured to more than 40 countries across 6 continents\, to both critical and popular acclaim. They have been shortlisted for the Live Art Prize\, a Total Theatre award\, and won an Off West End award for Best Performance\, and a Critics Table award for Best Touring Show. They were recently longlisted for the 2025 Artangel Open. \n\nCredits \n\nDeveloped with funding from Arts Council England. \n\nCreated by Action Hero \n\nText: Gemma Paintin and James Stenhouse \nDirection: Gemma Paintin \nPerformer: James Stenhouse \nDramaturgy: Deborah Pearson \nCostume: Ray Gammon \nLighting Design: Alex Fernandes \nMusic composition: Dinah Mullen \nSocial \n\nMedia & Web \n\n@ActionHeroLive \n\nactionhero.org.uk

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Andrew Kenrick | Rex Juba: 15 Glimpses of an African King
DESCRIPTION:Register interst at us@redlionbooks.co.uk \nThis event will be on a Thursday12th November.  Details TBC \nAndrew Kenrick in conversation with Ben Paites \nCaptured by Julius Caesar and raised by Octavian. Married to Antony and Cleopatra’s daughter. Experience the heyday of the Roman Mediterranean through the rediscovered history of Juba II\, the Most Scholarly King. \n‘I’ve wanted to read a biography of Juba II of Mauretania all my life and here it is… a delight and a must-read.’ Simon Sebag Montefiore\, author of The World: A Family History’A virtuoso recovery of two of antiquity’s most intriguing and little-known characters . . \n. A triumph’ Literary ReviewIn 46 BC\, at just two years old\, a young North African prince named Juba was paraded through the streets of Rome as part of Julius Caesar’s victory parade. This traumatic beginning\, however\, did not define his future. \nAs a young man\, Juba fought alongside Emperor Augustus and was sent back to rule over Mauretania as king. Juba’s reign was marked not by tyranny\, but by scholarship. A famed antiquarian\, travel writer\, and explorer\, he discovered and named the Canary Islands\, penned histories of Arabia and Libya\, and led diplomatic missions to his fellow kings. \nRuling alongside his wife\, Cleopatra Selene\, the daughter of Antony and Cleopatra\, these heirs to African dynasties were potent symbols of Romanisation. Their dynasty would be cut dramatically short by the mad emperor Caligula\, their history buried for centuries. In this ambitious work of historical recovery\, Dr Andrew Kenrick pieces together clues etched in coin and stone to reveal a Roman civilization that flourished just as much in Africa as it did in Europe. \nBy inviting us to shift our gaze to the southern shores of the Mediterranean\, Rex Juba offers a surprising new perspective on the heyday of the ancient world. \n‘A brilliantly told story which expands our conception of the Roman Empire.’ Emma Southon\, author of A History of the Roman Empire in 21 Women \n‘Colourful\, engaging and timely’ Paul M.M. Cooper\, author of Fall of Civilizations \n‘A gripping read that offers insights into an extraordinary ruler at an extraordinary period of history’ Emily Hauser\, author of Mythica \n‘A fine piece of storytelling\, written with verve and style’ Harry Sidebottom\, author of The Warrior of Rome’A textured and richly sourced story that showcases a complex and fascinating life’ Eve MacDonald\, author of Carthage \nDr Andrew Kenrick teaches Creative Non-Fiction at the University of Cambridge. His interdisciplinary studies have taken him from ancient history and archaeology to the movie Gladiator and Roman cooking\, as well as researching new methods for writing ancient biography. His proposal for Rex Juba won the Biographers’ Club Tony Lothian Prize. He lives in Norwich with his partner. \nBen Paites is Senior Curator at Colchester Museums. As well as working with an internationally designated Roman collection in Colchester\, he has researched\, published and shared stories about the Roman world throughout his career in various formats. He has a particular interest in the edges of the Roman Empire and the lives of the people that lived there.
