SUMMARY:Against the Tide
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to grow up by the sea today? \nFrom ambition and creativity to isolation and inequality\, explore intimate photographs and firsthand accounts that document what life is really like for young people growing up in coastal Britain. \nAbout the exhibition \nDocumentary photographer Polly Braden and journalist Lisa Bachelor spent more than a year travelling to coastal communities across England\, working closely with young people aged 16–25 using photographs\, film and personal stories to explore their lives. \nCreated as part of The Guardian’s Seascape series\, Against the Tide looks beyond the negative portrayals to reveal a more complicated picture of coastal Britain today. \nAcross Tendring\, Weston-super-Mare\, Scarborough\, Grimsby\, Southend\, Portsmouth\, Whitehaven\, Rhyl and Blackpool\, Polly’s photographs bring us into the lives of a generation growing up in some of the most deprived and often-forgotten places in England. \nAlongside accounts of isolation and lack of opportunity are expressions of resilience\, ambition and hope\, and a clear message: coastal towns are not just sites of decline\, but places of creativity and possibility. \nYoung people involved in this exhibition have created their own photographs\, exchanged ideas with peers and shared their experiences with UK policymakers\, showing how creativity and personal stories together can help inform decisions about coastal communities beyond words and numbers. \nWhat to expect \nDiscover intimate portraits\, honest first-hand accounts and a close-up look at the everyday lives of young people growing up in coastal England. \nPolly’s photographs are paired with the words and experiences of the young people she met\, creating a layered portrait of places that are often overlooked or reduced to stories of decline. \nThese artworks reflect both the challenges and strengths of coastal communities. Young people speak about education\, work\, mental health\, belonging and opportunity. \nThey also share stories of friendship\, creativity\, resilience and pride in where they come from. \nAbout Polly Braden \nPolly Braden is a documentary photographer known for her intimate\, long-term collaborations. \nHer work focuses on overlooked communities and social issues\, and her distinctive style combines quiet observation with deep empathy. \nPolly believes art can do more than tell stories. It gives people a chance to speak for themselves\, encourages empathy and starts conversations about issues that matter. \nWith special thanks to Attwells Solicitors\, Seán Kelly\, and Catherine for their generous contribution towards this exhibition. \n

DESCRIPTION:Tickets £12 / £10 concessions.Doors 7.30pm\, starts 8pm. \n\nThis gig is for a standing audience. \nA quadruple-threat night from some of our favourite purveyors of local heaviness! \nGOAT MONSOON\nGoat Monsoon are a 4-piece Sludge/Stoner/Groove metal band from Essex. Formed in 2012\, the band consists of Mike – Vocals. Ben – Guitars. Evil Stu – Bass. Lewis – Drums. Goat Monsoon have released several well-received E.P.s\, and in 2019 performed a critically acclaimed set at Bloodstock Festival. They have also supported musical heavyweights such as Orange Goblin\, Paradise Lost\, Crowbar\, Godthrymm\, Nebula and Conan.\nHail the Goat. Worship the Riff.\nfacebook.com/goatmonsoonyoutube.com/@goatmonsoongoatmonsoon.bandcamp.com \nDRAUGRHEIM\nMetal to the Masses East Anglia 2025 Finalists Draugrheim stand tall in the underground metal scene\, blazing a trail of incendiary shows from Suffolk to York. Draugrheim brings monumental\, metallic riffs\, grooves and hooks to forge their brand of Mythologically inspired Melodic Death Metal with a live show that takes no prisoners. \nMoving forwards from the relatively tentative start of the Sword Oath\, Draugrheim’s forthcoming first Album ‘Blood and Steel’ exhibits newfound confidence and certainty as well as their deep roots in 90s Melodeath brought up-to-date and garnished with tales of life\, death\, mythology and ancient war. \nAccording to Moshville times\, the album “punches like Mike Tyson in his prime” and is “In parts muscular\, melodic\, hook-laden\, and catchy\, this is an album that makes you want to bang your head\, throw some horns\, and stomp your way through the pit!”\nhttps://moshville.co.uk/reviews/album-review/2026/09/album-review-draugrheim-blood-and-steel/Live review from Ghost Cult Magazine: https://ghostcultmag.com/concert-review-ghosts-of-atlantis-existentialist-draugrheim-live-at-colchester-arts-centre/ \nARMS TO OBLIVION\nSince the cementing of their lineup in 2019\, Ipswich\nbased Groove Metallers Arms To Oblivion have barely\nlifted off the gas. With flavours of such top shelf acts as\nPantera\, Metallica\, Tool\, and Killswitch Engage\, it's easy\nto see why an amazing crowd reception at shows is a\ngiven. Featuring Doug "Burton " Warren (Vocals)\, Pete\nFinch (Guitar)\, Brent Brown (Bass)\, and Matt Kelly\n(Drums)\, Arms to Oblivion have the grit\, determination\,\npower\, and heart to push far\nbeyond the sleepy hollow of\nEast Anglia.https://www.facebook.com/armstooblivion \nDJ FETTDOG\nDJ Fettdog is a Colchester based DJ and musician who has regularly guested at London's Electric Dreams 80s Club for the last 20 years\, as well as putting on local nights like MARS\, Rock City Nights\, and Planet Earth.
