SUMMARY:Colne Delta presents the best of UK Country featuring The Jackson Line and Florence Sommerville
DESCRIPTION:Colne Delta present the best of UK Country featuring:- \nTHE JACKSON LINE \nWith two lead vocalists in the shape of Keith Porter and Jamie Cook\, harmonies were always going to be front and centre in The Jackson Line\, who deliver a modern take on classic Country and Americana. Storytelling\, harmonies and guitars are at the heart of what they do. \nThe band are comfortable with the tag of ‘modern country’\, but with each member bringing a wide range of differing influences to the table they create thoughtful\, melodic songs\, which capture the essence of country while allowing their other influences to permeate. \nIn the summer of 2022\, the band were invited to Winnipeg\, Canada to work with Juno Award-winning producer Murray Pulver on their second collection of songs. \n“Our first EP was self-produced\, and on reflection we focused too much on making it sound like a country record\,” explains Keith. “This time around we set out to discover who we are as a band.” \nThe first single from their upcoming EP\, Shade of the Pines\, featured on Apple Music’s ‘Today’s Country’ editorial playlist\, as well as being played on a host of radio stations including CountryLine and Radio Caroline. \nThe band will be releasing music throughout 2023 alongside performances at the 229 London\, the Black Deer Festival\, Nashville Meets London\, and the return of their popular songwriters round in Chelmsford\, the Radio City Sessions. \nNew single\, Brave\, out now“How do we tell the kids and who gets the house?” It’s the heart-wrenching breakdown that sums up Brave\, the new single from modern-country band The Jackson Line. Layered with tender harmonies and powerful\, emotive guitar\, the song explores a relationship in its final moments\, capturing the hurt\, heartbreak and ultimately\, courage. \nRecorded in Winnipeg\, Canada with multi award-winning producer\, Murray Pulver\, this is the band’s fourth single in 2023. The first single\, Shade of the Pines\, featured on Apple Music’s ‘Today’s Country’ editorial playlist\, while the second\, Gonna Get To You\, was showcased on Baylen Leonard’s Front Porch on Absolute Country as well as on Countryline Radio \nFLORENCE SOMMERVILLE \n21-year-old Florence Sommerville\, is a singer-songwriter from Orsett\, a small Essex village\, who thrives on modern country music. She’s performed to packed audiences at iconic venues in Nashville\, including the iconic Bluebird Café\, Commodore Grille\, Maxwell House\, Love & Exile\, Cambria Hotel and was chosen by No Depression magazine as one of the top performers at the 2024 AMA Festival. In the UK she’s played the Maverick Festival\, Latitude and Moseley Folk & Arts Festival\, the Green Note\, Libra Camden\, and the Fiddler’s Elbow in London and supported such diverse acts as Diana Jones\, Tom Robinson\, Annie Keating\, Track Dogs\, Hannah Aldridge\, the Hanging Stars\, Dan Owen and many more. \nSince the beginning of 2025 she has gigged regularly\, performing all across the South-east\, both solo and with her acclaimed band\, including selling out the Brentwood Theatre twice. Prior to the release of her debut album\, ENDLESS HORIZON in July\, she has released three digital singles\, (I’ll Be Your) Best Broken Heart\, California and Broken Pieces. All three are included on the 12-track album\, that perfectly captures the diversity and richness of Florence’s incredible songwriting. The CD release includes four bonus acoustic tracks\, making for an incredible 16-track collection. Criss-crossing country genres the way she journeys through life\, with wild abandonment\, passion and intensity\, the youthful independent singer-songwriter has created a uniquely sophisticated and signature manifesto\, a bold indication that Florence Sommerville has at the outset of her career found her perfect stride. As ENDLESS HORIZON gloriously unfolds. Florence emerges as one of the more gifted melodists\, subtly versatile singers\, and liberated lyricists of her generation. Florence emotionally journeys through the upheavals we all encounter in relationships. Whether it be the tentative discovery of first love\, the heartache of a breakup or the impossibility of a love that cannot be\, Florence crosses that minefield with a maturity and sureness of a voice that belies her youthfulness. \nEach track offers a unique perspective: the empowering defiance of (I’ll Be Your) Best Broken Heart\, the nostalgic longing of Silly Little Things\, and the reflective tone of Broken Pieces. Other standout tracks include the poignant Love Me Then\, the stirring Forget The Water\, and the vividly character-driven Molasses\, which addresses the challenging subject of father-daughter mental abuse. Florence also embraces optimism in the summery anthem Cut And Run\, a perfect soundtrack to the boundless possibilities of life. Guided by manager Alan Cackett and thanks to the production skills of Alan West and the superb musicianship of the gifted players\, every track boasts evocative\, affectionate touches. This eclectic set is awash in satisfying country music elements\, yet it never feels nostalgic\, mixing pleasurable sounds with a bracing dose of modern-day arrangements for a riveting listen. The result is a perfect showcase for Florence Sommerville’s unique talents\, revealing a singer of effortless ease\, who nails unshakable hooks as she lyrically navigates descriptive leaps and bounds. The fact that ENDLESS HORIZON also marks her debut\, makes this effort all the more remarkable. \nThere’s a raw rootsy quality to Florence’s music that belies her youthfulness. An assured performer\, she takes total command of any stage from the outset and allows her crystalline vocals to shine on her well-crafted original songs. \nProfits in aid of Brightlingsea Winter Fest

SUMMARY:My Darling Clementine in Concert
DESCRIPTION:THIS GIG HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO WEDNESDAY 10TH JUNE 2026. \nDue to scheduling conflicts\, this gig has been rescheduled. Tickets for the original February date are valid for the new one. \nTickets £20.Doors open 7pm\, starts 7.30pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \nFor what began as a side project for Michael Weston King & Lou Dalgleish\, a simple labour of love\, a homage to the classic country duets of the 60’s and 70’s\, My Darling Clementine has grown and grown and now some rivals the solo careers of it’s two main protagonists. \nOutstanding songwriters and singers individually\, who between them have worked with such diverse artists as Nick Cave\, Bryan Ferry\, The Brodsky Quartet\, Steve Earle\, Nils Lofgren\, Ron Sexsmith\, & Graham Parker\, together they create harmonious magic and are a formidable musical force. \nAs well as showcasing brand new songs\, the current live show is a deep dive into their extensive and revered back catalogue. Michael and Lou’s songs have been covered by over 40 different artists and featured in various films and TV shows. Lou’s song No Matter What Tammy Said was placed in the top 25 country songs of the 21st Century by Country Music People magazine\, while Michael’s song Riding The Range was covered by the late\, great Townes Van Zandt. \nGiven their mutual love of other songwriters\, expect a tastefully chosen cover version or two\, including something written by Elvis Costello. Their 2021 album Country Darkness\, a collection of Costello songs re-interpreted for duet\, was made in collaboration with EC’s long standing pianist Steve Nieve. \n“King and Dalgleish have re-invented the country duet – The mingling of these two voices is just heavenly” Mojo

SUMMARY:Vinyl Sessions: Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £4Doors open 12pm\, show starts at 12:30pmThis show is for a seated audience. \nThe bar will be open throughout. \nBob Dylan / Blood on the Tracks \nThey (critics\, fans) call it Dylan’s ‘break-up album’\, and yeah\, there’s no shortage of battered emotions and accusatory finger-pointing to be found across its 10 tracks – but has a song cycle about love turning cold ever felt so counter-intuitively lush\, comforting and warm? For members of the faithful\, Blood on the Tracks is a centrepiece of the great man’s catalogue. for Dylan neophytes\, it’s perhaps the ideal entry point to discovering the complex\, multi-layered lyricism for which he’s so celebrated\, here beautifully recorded on wax using the finest studio technology of the time\, with Dylan himself in the producer’s chair. Free from the muffled clutter of his 60s period and the ill-advised sonic bombast of his (and\, to be fair\, most of his contemporaries’) 80s output\, the result is arguably among Dylan’s most pristine and contemporary-sounding records – with lots to chew on in the post-listening discussion\, we suspect… \nThe album playback will be followed by a Q&A session. \nAfter a short break\, we’ll follow the album with our usual ‘Dead Wax’ session. Bring along a vinyl disc of your choice and hear a track from it played through the Arts Centre PA. This can be anything you like\, for any reason – the more ‘out there’ the better.

SUMMARY:The Brothers Gillespie *
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £15 / £14 concessions.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \nDescribed by Folk Radio UK as ‘weaving an especially compelling magic’\, and ‘showing British acoustic music in its best possible light’\, Northumbrian duo The Brothers Gillespie make music that is animated by lyrical songwriting\, fine fingerstyle guitar playing\, multi-instrumental musicianship and ‘the glorious tones of their blood harmony’ (Sam Lee). \nBrothers James and Sam Gillespie found their sound growing up in the fells and valleys of Northumberland\, their songs often describing relationships with wild places and the experience of finding oneself in a world alive with soul. The music comes to them most strongly when walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments which remains a regular practice for them. This spirit is channeled into their live performances which have a rare and intimate energy\, both ethereal and earthy\, romantic and radical. The brothers have travelled far and wide with their music and have played at Cambridge and Sidmouth Folk Festivals and opened for Lankum and Sam Lee. In 2021 they featured in the English Heritage ‘Songs of England’ recording series that appeared on BBC Radio 4. The release of their new album ‘The Merciful Road’ (‘pure magic’\, Living Tradition) in Spring 2022 saw them embark on their most extensive national tour to date. \n‘The Merciful Road’ was recorded in a cottage by the banks of the river Tweed and like their previous album ‘The Fell’\, it blends rootsy\, acoustic elements to create a rich warm sound with a touch of vintage magic. In some ways it is an album about finding the thread of love and belonging in a world that seems to be nonetheless unravelling. \nThe brothers emerge from the time of lockdowns with a yet greater reverence for the joy and privilege of being with an audience in real time and space. \n‘Our music is inspired by the still wild soul of the land in which we live\, a land alive with presences\, not owned by anyone. It is about seeing with the eye of the heart and recovering our imaginations. It is about finding home\, belonging and each other in a world which is singing to us as we sing to it’. \n“Anyone who has seen the brothers live will surely attest that it is an experience that will stay with you. There is a feeling of warmth that exudes from them and affects everyone in the room” – Folk London \n“Not since the minimal chamber folk of Simon And Garfunkel has two voices and an acoustic guitar sounded so absolutely perfect.” FATEA \n“Stunning songs beautifully sung and played. Without doubt a classic in the making from a duo potent with potential.” – Northern Sky \n“Uncluttered\, simply but intoxicatingly arranged and adorned by their magical harmonies\, musically steeped in the earth\, grass and leaves that mark the pathways\, this is a road you really need to travel.” – Bright Young Folk \n“Warning to all folk fest and club orgs. book these lads while you still can because I have a feeling that they aren’t going to be short of work. – Mike Harding \n“The stars of the show were The Brother’s Gillespie – more than an hour of fantastic musicianship. Imagine the guitar work of the early Nic Jones\, the close harmony work of the Dransfields and the commitment and honesty of Bob Davenport rolled into two brothers and you’ll get some idea.” Mike Harding \nSupport: ANDREW MILLHAM is a nature and folk history writer\, with features and columns published in a wide range of national publications includingBBC Wildlife and Coast. His debut book\, Singing Like Larks (2023)\, is about the fascinating relationship between birds and traditional folk songs and has been described as “absolutely charming” by the Copper family and “a beautiful\, informative and fascinating book” by renown ornithologist Stephen Moss. Andrew performs songs from the book both unaccompanied and on acoustic guitar.

SUMMARY:Mercury Reads: To Be You & Self Control
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Mercury Reads a series of lively rehearsed readings celebrating local voices and fresh new writing. Each event spotlights an exciting playwright from our region\, giving audiences the chance to see new stories take shape for the very first time. \nIn this session\, join us in the Upstairs Bar on Tue 3 Mar from 3.30pm as we look at Mercury Reads: To Be You by Esohe Uwadiae and Self Control by Ted Marriott. \n3.30pm: To Be You by Esohe UwadiaeShe’s dumped her fiancé\, quit her job and packed her bags. Now what? \nTo Be You is a semi-autobiographical character study into black identity\, chosen family and childhood. It follows an unnamed British Nigerian woman at the pivotal point of spontaneously moving to Nigeria to complete her youth service and how she got here. \nWhile packing up her childhood room in preparation\, our protagonist soon realises that secrets never lay dead. As photo albums and teenage memorabilia lead her down memory lane\, something in the shadows won’t stay buried and she is forced to confront the worst thing she has ever done. \n4.45pm: Self Control by Ted Marriott“I thought I should come here today\, because I reached a point where I wasn’t sure if I was here anymore. Or I was here to begin with.” \nSelf Control is a one-man show that follows the story of Matthew\, who is on a quest to win back his boyfriend\, prove to everyone he’s got his shit together\, bury years of self-loathing and grief\, and throw his mum the best birthday party anyone has ever seen – easy. But with every step he takes forward\, he finds himself back in time\, in a club\, the ceiling of his flat\, his childhood bedroom\, or his flooded bathroom. He must do all he can to maintain some self control and get back to a reality of stasis and comfort before he loses himself forever. \nSelf Control is a funny\, heartbreaking and time-travelling tragicomedy\, exploring the contradictions and connections between men’s mental health and queer identity\, family\, love\, loss and how these are experienced physically and temporally. \nTed Marriott is the writer and performer of this piece.

SUMMARY:Vinyl Sessions: The The - Soul Mining
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £4Doors open 12pm\, show starts at 12:30pmThis show is for a seated audience. \nThe bar will be open throughout. \nThe The / Soul Mining \nMost of us will muddle through the emotional intensity of late adolescence before moving on with the rest of our lives – but if you’re Matt Johnson\, you shut yourself away in the bedroom above the Stratford pub your parents run\, and channel all that self-doubt and sense of isolation into what will eventually become the deeply introspective lyrics of your debut album. ‘The The’ was essentially a loose collective of mates and session musicians with Johnson at the centre calling the creative shots\, and it was an approach that paid dividends on Soul Mining. Operating at a place where post-punk meets synthpop and landing somewhere neatly in the middle\, Johnson’s sometimes despondent words (‘Another year over and what have I done? / My aspirations have shrivelled in the sun’) are brought to vivid life here\, with walloping drums\, sparkling guitar figures and even a piano solo from a certain Jools Holland at one point. You won’t find many albums that could accommodate the wistful\, big-hearted warmth of a song like ‘This Is the Day’ AND the full-throttle\, beat-driven closing track ‘Giant’ – but this one did\, and went on to become an 80s cult classic that demands to be heard loud. \nThe album playback will be followed by a Q&A session. \nAfter a short break\, we’ll follow the album with our usual ‘Dead Wax’ session. Bring along a vinyl disc of your choice and hear a track from it played through the Arts Centre PA. This can be anything you like\, for any reason – the more ‘out there’ the better.

SUMMARY:Sam Carter *
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £16.50.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \n‘Sam Carter is a brilliant guitarist and songwriter who combines the observational with social comment and personal reflection’ Songlines \n‘A singer who can hold the audience spellbound all by himself’ R2 \n‘Really wonderful’ Jools Holland \nMidlands-born Sam Carter is a BBC Folk Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist renowned for his lyrical storytelling\, which Uncut described as being “as penetrating as Richard Thompson’s best work”. \nFor over 15 years\, he has been stirring audiences from Camden to Canada\, from major festivals to intimate clubs. Carter’s expressive fingerpicking led Jon Boden of Bellowhead to call him “the finest English-style fingerpicking guitarist of his generation\,” while Ivor Novello-winner Nitin Sawhney has praised his “killer voice.” \nWith a discography that spans six solo albums and two releases with the folk-rock band False Lights\, Carter’s music reflects a blend of traditional English folk\, shape-note singing\, and rock. Notable highlights in his career include a spellbinding performance on Later… with Jools Holland\, where he played songs from his shape-note-inspired album The No Testament alongside renowned fiddler Sam Sweeney. \nCarter’s latest album release\, the acclaimed Top 40 Folk Chart album Silver Horizon\, has cemented his reputation as a skilful blender of ancient and modern. Produced by Andy Bell at the remote Red Kite Studios in Wales\, the album’s 11 indie-folk songs create a dreamlike soundscape\, with guitarist Stuart McCallum (The Breath) adding lush\, reverb-soaked textures. Carter says of this work\, “I’m still dealing with themes of love\, loss\, and change… but sketching events in an impressionistic way gives the songs more room to breathe.” \nSam Carter’s live performances are nothing short of captivating\, filled with the raw honesty\, humour\, and skilled musicianship that underscore his standing as one of contemporary folk’s brightest talents. \nSupport: The Washed Up Folk BandThe Washed Up Folk band hail from the misty shores of Essex and Suffolk with a unique brand of traditional folk story-telling and modern arrangements. “They intelligently weave together dynamic arrangements with rich vocal harmonies and insightful emotional depth\, creating a compelling listen.” – Folk and Honey.
