SUMMARY:Au Pairs *
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £26.50Doors open 7pm.This gig is for a standing audience. \nAGMP Concerts proudly presents AU PAIRS‘Playing With A Different Sex’ 45th Anniversary + very special guests:GINA BIRCH & THE UNREASONABLES \nFirst concert in over 40 years for legendary Post Punk group AU PAIRS. \nAu Pairs formed in late 1978 in Birmingham\, UK in the post-punk era. They were a much-loved band who combined fun\, dancey music with an innovative and\, for that time\, a daringly progressive message. In their original form they were 2 women and 2 men\, the objective being to show that women and men can work together as equals. Lesley Woods led the band as frontperson\, lead singer\, songwriter and guitarist. Lesley was once described as “”one of the most striking women in British rock”. Their first album ‘Playing With A Different Sex’ is a post-punk classic and focusses on gender and other politics. A critic from The Guardian praised it for its “viciously well-observed lyrics on contemporary life\, love and the role of women “. \nThe band is re-forming beginning 2026 when they commence a UK tour with Lesley Woods and new members. The 2 women/2 men balance remains . Au Pairs blend political lyrics with a tough funk-dance-rock idiom which is as relevant today as it ever was. \nSpecial guest support is Gina Birch and the Unreasonables. Gina Birch was a founding member of influential post-punk group The Raincoats. Her next project was Rough Trade Records signings Dorothy. Gina’s debut solo LP ‘I Play My Bass Loud’ was released in 2021 and her second release ‘Trouble’ is out now.

SUMMARY:Under The Turning Light: A Night of Post Rock & Alternative - Abrasive Trees + Rothko + Strandings +
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £8 / £7 concessionsDoors open 7pm.This gig is for a standing audience. \nABRASIVE TREESDescribed as ‘utterly enticing’ by Louder Than War and ‘a transcendent experience of euphoric dissonance’ by Post-Punk.com\, Abrasive Trees take their name from a Buddhist description of a hallucination-like nightmare realm. Led by Matthew Rochford (Silver Moth/Rothko)\, the band display a willingness to experiment alongside a sound that sits loosely within an experimental post-punk\, post-rock aesthetic. Exploring themes of loss\, turmoil\, and spiritual realisation\, they use a combination of distorted and reverb-drenched guitars\, intricate melodies and driving drum beats to create a sense of atmosphere and intensity. When they use lyrics they’re often cryptic and evocative\, painting vivid pictures of complex emotional landscapes. After several releases lauded by BBC Introducing\, Echoes and Dust\, Aural Aggravation\, and The Big Takeover\, the band are preparing to release their much anticipated debut studio album due for release Spring 2026 on Argonauta Records. Abrasive Trees weave fierce threads of sound into something both haunting and transcendent. On stage\, they summon a raw\, immersive energy—each performance a spellbinding journey into the unknown.“Post-punk psychedelia…Abrasive Trees deal an evocative and mysteriously mystical\, poetic\, dark energy that is utterly enticing” Louder Than War… “Colossal…explodes into a monumental extended climax that’s absolutely killer and one hundred percent exhilarating” Aural Aggravationhttps://abrasivetrees.bandcamp.com/ \nROTHKOMark Beazley\, under his Rothko banner\, has crafted a distinctive niche in the music world since 1998. SUMMARY:The Crazy World of Arthur Brown + Valhallans
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £26.50.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a standing audience. \nArthur Brown is synonymous with his 1968 hit “Fire” and the Hammond-driven “Crazy World” line-up which spawned it. However\, his ‘God of Hellfire’ burned out fast and\, in 1970\, he returned with a new project: the prog-festival freak-show Kingdom Come followed by a varied solo career. Those initial four band albums\, by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and by Kingdom Come are thrilling\, as tend to be Brown’s cameos on other peoples’ projects. \nBest known for his flamboyant theatrical performances and his powerful\, wide- ranging operatic voice. He has been a major influence on a wide range of musicians due to his outstanding vocal ability and wild stage persona and concepts. He is considered a pioneer of shock rock and progressive rock and influential on heavy metal music. \nHe associated with Jimi Hendrix\, The Who\, Frank Zappa\, Hawkwind\, Klaus Schultze and Alice Cooper and made a cameo appearance in the cult film “The Committee” and also “Tommy”. His countless collaborations include The Alan Parsons Project\, The Stranglers and The Prodigy. \n His best-known single “Fire” hit number 1 in the UK singles chart and Canada\, and a number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album “The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown” had top ten success on both sides of the Atlantic. Following “Fire”\, the press would often refer to Brown as “The God of Hellfire”\, in reference to the opening shouted line of the song. \nArthur shows no signs of stopping or slowing down and continues to record and release hugely inspiring music\, including his most recent release “Long\, Long Road” (2022) and the launch of his new multi-media show “A Human Perspective”. \nhttps://www.thegodofhellfire.com/ \nSupport from Valhallans – Colchester’s very own purveyors of improvised Space Swamp (apparently). SUMMARY:Jo Harman: ". . . an incredibly believable and soulful singer."- Echoes
DESCRIPTION:An artist who sings straight from the heart\, with pure\, unadulterated soulfulness and sincerity devoid of any histrionics\, Jo Harman was proclaimed “the UK’s finest female soul blues voice” by The Daily Mirror\, while Classic Rock & Blues said\, “She writes lip-biting\, beautiful songs.” \nIt has been a decade since Jo travelled to Nashville to record her most recent body of original work\, the highly acclaimed People We Become\, featuring Michael McDonald (whose other duet partners number Aretha Franklin\, Carly Simon\, and Patti LaBelle)\, yet her reputation and standing have only continued to grow in the years since\, confirmed by her 2025 Female Vocalist of the Year nomination by Soul Tracks. \nEven a global pandemic and the arrival of motherhood have done little to slow Jo’s momentum\, and in a crowded music landscape\, industry and audiences alike increasingly recognise her as a UK artist of rare authenticity\, depth\, and skill. \nDuring this period\, Jo has felt a renewed pull towards Black American music of the late 1960s and early 1970s – songs that offered powerful commentary on social injustice. More than half a century on\, their themes resonate strongly with her own concerns about society in today’s troubled times. \nThis has led Jo to record her own interpretations of Donny Hathaway’s Someday We’ll All Be Free\, then Andy Grammer’s Don’t Give Up On Me\, and now the Ralph MacDonald/William Salter composition Trade Winds – a song whose message she feels profoundly – which completes this trilogy of 70s soul classics\, each chosen for lyrics that speak directly to her deeply held reflections on the present day. \nAll of this comes ahead of plans to finally release new original material from 2026 onwards\, which may – at last – develop into the long-awaited third album. \nFor this intimate\, stripped-back trio show\, performed exclusively for The Music Mix\, Jo is accompanied by two world-class musicians in Emily Francis (Toyah Willcox\, Andrea Bocelli\, Rumer\, Alexandra Burke) and Nat Martin (Robert Fripp\, Galliano\, Thomas Dolby). \nJo Harman (Vocals)Emily Francis (Keys)Nat Martin (Guitar)

SUMMARY:Jo Harman @ The Music Mix: ". . . an incredibly believable and soulful singer." - Echoes
DESCRIPTION:In the age of beige\, when the norm is to suppress the spirit in a deluge of conservatism and political correctness\, it is a raw and heart-warming sight to witness\, but Jo Harman can convey a song so soulfully that it elicits such an overtly emotional response. \nAn artist who sings straight from the heart\, with pure\, unadulterated soulfulness and sincerity devoid of any histrionics\, Jo was proclaimed “the UK’s finest female soul blues voice” by The Daily Mirror\, while Classic Rock & Blues said\, “She writes lip-biting\, beautiful songs.” \nFor this intimate\, stripped-back trio show\, performed exclusively for The Music Mix\, Jo is accompanied by two world-class musicians in Emily Francis (Toyah Willcox\, Andrea Bocelli\, Rumer\, Alexandra Burke) and Nat Martin (Robert Fripp\, Galliano\, Thomas Dolby). \nIt has been a decade since Jo travelled to Nashville to record her most recent body of original work\, the highly acclaimed People We Become\, featuring Michael McDonald (whose other duet partners number Aretha Franklin\, Carly Simon\, and Patti LaBelle)\, yet her reputation and standing have only continued to grow in the years since\, confirmed by her 2025 Female Vocalist of the Year nomination by Soul Tracks. \nJo Harman (Vocals)Emily Francis (Keys)Nat Martin (Guitar)

SUMMARY:Belle Chen
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £15 / £13 concessions.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \nNotes fall like raindrops\, quickening pace as the clouds gather. The piano melody splish sploshes into the electronic soundscape; the trees become denser\, the journey more profound. Belle Chen’s unique show\, Ravel In The Forest\, leads the listener through imagined ancient woodland\, quiet clearings and tropical canopies. We’re accompanied by birds\, a chameleon\, a dragonfly – the wonder of the natural world is imbued into this imaginary space. Fresh off the 2024 EFG London Jazz Festival\, Belle is praised as an artist that is ‘Original and provocative… feels like the sense of discovery’ (Brian Eno). In this Australian Music Prize-nominated artist’s live shows\, Belle takes a quirky\, yet tender approach to musical storytelling. With the unmistakable influence of Maurice Ravel\, the playfulness of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Joe Hisaishi’s melodic sweetness shining through\, Belle blends sonic synth explorations\, classical virtuosity\, and free flowing improvisations that feel equally at home on concert hall\, jazz\, electronica and experimental stages. \n“Original and provocative… feels like the sense of discovery” Brian Eno.
