SUMMARY:Non-Fiction Author Richard Negus: Words From the Hedge
DESCRIPTION:Author Talk by Richard Negus discussing non fiction book WORDS FROM THE HEDGE at Red Lion Books \nHedges are as old as civilisation and as emblematic of the British countryside as chalk streams\, hay meadows and oak trees. But unlike woodland and rivers\, farmland hedges remain on the periphery of the public consciousness\, often going unnoticed and almost always underappreciated. \nJoin us for a morning of enlightening\, engaging and entertaining conversation with professional hedgelayer\, conservationist\, writer and author\, Richard Negus. \nIn his book ‘WORDS FROM THE HEDGE – A Hedgelayer’s View of the Countryside’\, Richard takes us on a journey that reveals these ribbons of thorn and barb are so much more than mere decoration or boundary markers. They are essential for much-needed wildlife recovery. Each hedge is a testament to generations of human skill and labour\, requiring ongoing maintenance to survive and thrive. \nRichard has been heralded as “the hedgerow’s one true champion” by celebrated Countryside Writer John Lewis-Stempel\, and his book praised for being “joyful and illuminating” and “an important\, funny and passionate defence of the British countryside”. \nRichard Negus is a former soldier and professional horseman. He now lays hedges for a living and is recognised as one of the country’s leading exponents and practitioners of hedgerow management and rejuvenation. \nHe lives in Suffolk\, co-hosts a weekly podcast – Countryslide – covering British rural life and work\, and writes for publications including The Daily Telegraph\, The Critic and Scribehound.

SUMMARY:Author Event: John Lewis-Stempel Monday\, 3rd November 2025 6.30pm
DESCRIPTION:John Lewis-Stempel in conversation with Red Lion Books. John will be signing first edition hardback copies of Night Life \nAt night the senses become reordered. Hearing becomes privileged over vision\, and we edge forward arms outstretched\, feeling our way through the inky blackness. It is after dark that the human being becomes more ‘animal’\, more sensitive to Nature. But the lights of the modern world have obliterated any meaningful connection to the night. We have lost touch with its wonders as well as its terrors. In this enchanting follow-up to Nightwalking\, John Lewis-Stempel once again ventures out into the night to uncover the unseen world of nocturnal creatures. \nWhen the curtain of night falls\, a spectacle begins. That of bio-luminescence\, of boxing hares\, and wheat fields shimmering in the moonlight. In Night Life\, Lewis-Stempel wanders further afield\, to terrains new\, and shows us why the night is precious\, and what it is to be human in the dark. \nJOHN LEWIS-STEMPEL is a farmer and ‘Britain’s finest living nature writer’ (The Times). His books include the Sunday Times bestsellers Woodston\, The Running Hare and The Wood. He is the only person to have won the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing twice\, with Meadowland and Where Poppies Blow. In 2016\, he was named ‘Magazine Columnist of the Year’ for his column in Country Life. He farms cattle\, sheep\, pigs and poultry. Traditionally.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Laura Purcell Hosted by JJA Harwood
DESCRIPTION:What a treat to have Laura Purcell talk about the follow-up to her first novel The Silent Companions. That novel was one of her most popular and we can’t wait to read The House of Splinters. The evening will be hosted by fellow author JJA Harwood. If you love a classily written haunted house mystery\, some early readers have promised the new novel will be even better. A new generation returns to the Bridge to rescue it from ruin\, only for buried secrets and past injustices to lay their chill hand upon the families hopes. A perfect blend of the picturesque\, the supernatural and dark folk-lore. Are the children safe in the shadow of “the silent companions”? Don’t miss this spooky\, gothic masterpiece.Doors will open at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. Tickets are £5 or £3 for people with the Waterstones Plus card\, and you can purchase the book and ticket option for £20.

The raw and dramatic volcanic scenery offers endless and exciting opportunities for photography. In winter\, the unique Icelandic landscape is transformed into something truly magical\, with a blanket of snow and ice covering everything\, including frozen rivers\, lakes\, and waterfalls. The special quality of light during this season adds another dimension to the scenery\, and the longer nights increase the chances of experiencing the Northern Lights. \n(Visitors £5.00) \nHeader Image: Winter Light\, Iceland – Colin Westgate MPAGB FRPS MFIAP APAGB
