SUMMARY:Arpita Shah: Nalini
DESCRIPTION:Arpita Shah’s Nalini explores motherhood\, migration\, heritage and the connections between generations through the stories of the artist\, her mother and her grandmother.\n\nDeveloped across India\, East Africa and the UK\, the photographic series grew from Shah’s desire to understand more about the experiences and relationships of the women in her family.\n\nThe exhibition brings together 26 photographic works alongside family photographs and personal objects including dried flowers and traditional saris. Its title comes from Shah’s grandmother\, Nalini\, meaning ‘lotus’ in Sanskrit\, with flowers recurring throughout the work as the artist explores family\, femininity\, memory and cultural identity.\n\nNalini runs at Firstsite until Sunday 4 October 2026.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

SUMMARY:Jane Eyre
DESCRIPTION:A Mercury Production \nOne woman’s fight for a life that is worthy of her courage\, and a love that is worthy of her heart. \nOrphaned as a young girl\, the passionate and sensitive Jane longs to escape the clutches of her cruel aunt. \nFreedom beckons when she is offered the job of a governess in the house of the brooding and secretive Mr Rochester. \nAs intrigue turns to attraction\, Jane finds herself drawn in by Rochester’s mercurial charm. But when the truth finally comes out\, she will be forced to choose between the man she wants\, and the woman she wants to be. \nNearly two centuries on\, Charlotte Brontë’s groundbreaking story is as thrilling and relevant as ever in this bold production directed by 2025 RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award-winner Lily Dyble\, based on Sally Cookson\, Mike Akers and the original company’s trailblazing adaptation.

SUMMARY:New Face for Leprosy Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This October\, the New Face for Leprosy exhibition comes to Colchester Library for a free\, month-long public exhibition exploring the lives and experiences of people affected by leprosy. \nThe project was conceived in 2019 by Emeritus Professor Diana Lockwood to challenge some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. \nWorking with photographer Tom Bradley\, the project visited Lepra’s programmes in India and Bangladesh\, meeting people affected by leprosy and recording their stories as they dealt with the physical\, social and emotional impact of diagnosis. \nBradley’s portraits aim to present the people photographed\, first and foremost\, as individuals\, challenging some of the images traditionally associated with leprosy and showing people living independent\, fulfilling lives. \nAlongside the photography\, the Colchester exhibition will feature artefacts from Lepra’s archives\, looking back at the organisation’s history and its work throughout the 20th century to improve the lives of people affected by leprosy and develop new treatments. \nThe exhibition is free to visit\, and no booking or ticket is required. \nTwo special events will also take place during the exhibition\, including a talk on Lepra’s history on Wednesday 21 October and a children’s storytelling session on Friday 30 October.

SUMMARY:Rewilding Imagination Labs
DESCRIPTION:A monthly gathering for artists\, creatives\, and the curious to explore the uncharted territories of imagination. \nGuided by Daniel & Clara\, each session unfolds around a new theme\, inviting attendees into participatory exercises\, immersive experiences\, and collective discussion. \nSitting at the intersection of workshop\, performance\, and experimental space\, the Lab encourages experimentation\, challenges habitual thinking\, and opens space for the unpredictable\, playful\, and untamed aspects of creativity. \nIt is a radical environment that celebrates the strange\, messy\, and complex dreaming creatures we are – inviting us to think differently\, create more freely\, and cultivate a wilder\, more embodied connection with both the inner and outer worlds. \nThe second half of each session offers an open platform for participants to share work\, test ideas\, or try something new for the first time\, fostering collaboration\, curiosity\, and collective discovery. \nThe Rewilding Imagination Lab sparks creative freedom\, playful risk-taking\, and new ways of thinking\, feeling\, and being. \nIntimate Encounters – Thu 1 Oct\, 7pm \nAbout Daniel & Clara \nSince meeting in 2010\, artists Daniel & Clara have dedicated themselves to a shared life of creative experimentation\, working across moving image\, photography\, performance and mail art to explore the nature of human experience\, perception and reality. \nTheir current projects focus on the complex relationship between humans and the natural world\, particularly exploring the climate crisis as a psychological crisis. \nTheir work has been exhibited and screened at Norwich Castle Museum (2025)\, Art Exchange\, Colchester (2024)\, Focal Point Gallery\, Southend (2021)\, By Art Matters\, Hangzhou (2021)\, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin\, Grand Palais Paris & HKW Berlin (2020)\, Kettle’s Yard\, Cambridge (2019)\, Whitechapel Gallery\, London (2019)\, Museu de Arte Moderna Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil (2019). SUMMARY:Bridging Dreams: By Sakai International Community Arts
DESCRIPTION:Bridging Dreams By Sakai International Community Arts\n2 to 29 October 2026\nLevel Best Art Gallery\, Colchester \nThis October\, Level Best Art Gallery welcomes Bridging Dreams\, a special international exhibition connecting artists in Sakai City\, Japan\, with the Level Best community in Colchester. \nFounded in Osaka in 2019\, Sakai International Community Arts is an inclusive arts organisation that brings disabled and non-disabled people together through art\, theatre\, and creative workshops. Its talented members work across painting\, calligraphy\, performance and dance. \nFor many of the artists\, travelling overseas is difficult\, but they have long dreamed of sharing their work internationally. Bridging Dreams makes that possible\, allowing their artwork to cross the ocean and create new connections between Japan and the UK. \nThe exhibition celebrates creativity without borders and the growing relationship between Sakai International Community Arts and Level Best Enterprises. \nThis project has been made possible with the generous support of The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n
