SUMMARY:Tim Noble & Sue Webster: Love and Hate at Firstsite
DESCRIPTION:Noble & Webster have created a remarkable group of anti-monuments in their 24-year career\, mixing the strategies of modern sculpture and the attitude of punk to make art from anti-art. \nTheir work derives much of its power from its fusion of opposites\, form and anti-form\, high culture and anti-culture\, male and female\, craft and rubbish\, sex and violence. \nIn this presentation\, eight light sculptures by Noble & Webster illuminate areas of the Firstsite building with pops of glimmering colour. \nThis series of light sculptures reference iconic pop culture symbols represented in the form of shop-front-type signage and carnival shows inherent of British seaside towns\, Las Vegas and Times Square. With the aid of complex light sequencing these signs perpetually flash and spiral out messages of everlasting love\, and hate. \nPlease note\, that this exhibition contains works including flashing lights and contrasting colours across the building. For further information please speak to a member of staff. \n  \nAbout Tim Noble & Sue Webster \nIn 2009\, Noble & Webster were awarded Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Art at Nottingham Trent University in recognition of their contribution to contemporary British Art and their radical influence on younger generations of artists. In 2007\, they were awarded the ARKEN Prize at Arken\, Museum of Modern Art\, Copenhagen for outstanding contribution to the international scene of contemporary art\, in the same year their critically acclaimed project Polymorphous Perverse at the Freud Museum was nominated for the prestigious South Bank Prize. \nSince their first solo show in London\, British Rubbish in 1996\, Noble & Webster have enjoyed international recognition with solo exhibitions at Rockefeller Plaza\, New York\, 2008\, The Freud Museum\, London\, 2006\, CAC Malaga\, 2005\, Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, 2004\, P.S.1/MoMA\, New York\, 2003\, Milton Keynes Gallery\, UK\, 2002\, Deste Foundation\, Athens\, 2000 and The Chisenhale Gallery\, London\, 1999. Their work was included in Statuephilia—Contemporary Sculptors at The British Museum\, London in 2008–09 and in the exhibition Apocalypse—Beauty and Horror in Contemporary Art\, at The Royal Academy\, London\, 2000. \nTheir work is in the permanent collections of the AISTHI Foundation\, Beirut; Arken Museum of Modern Art\, Copenhagen; Art Gallery of South Australia\, Adelaide; Artis-François Pinault\, France; Berengo Studio\, Venice; The British Museum\, London; Dakis Joannou Collection\, Athens; Es Baluard Museum\, Palma\, Spain; The Goss-Michael Collection\, Dallas; Honart Museum\, Tehran\, Iran; Lyonel-Feininger Museum\, Quedlinburg\, Germay; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Denver; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles; National Portrait Gallery\, London; Nicola Erni Collection\, Zug\, Switzerland; The Olbricht Collection\, Berlin; Project Space 176–The Zabludowicz Collection\, London; Saatchi Collection\, London; Samsung Museum\, Seoul\, Korea; Solomon R. SUMMARY:Cover Story (part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Blondel Medieval & Renaissance wind band playing more music from the 14th-16th centuries on shawms\, bagpipes and recorders. \nWhat makes a song leap across national boundaries and language barriers\, slip from the secular to the ecclesiastic\, and remain at the top of the charts for more than 70 years? We don’t have the formula\, but we know why these pieces wedged themselves into the cultural background of medieval Europe. The music is fabulous.Cover Story tracks connections between people\, places\, texts and music. It follows the evolution of popular late medieval melodies across Europe as they are copied\, rearranged and repurposed over years\, and even decades.Catchy dances and lyrical chansons\, ingenious rounds and dazzling divisions by Machaut\, Dufay\, Wolkenstein\, Bedyngham\, Binchois\, and many unnamed masters.Inspired by the virtuosic wind players of the Middle Ages\, Blondel bring you their signature rousing blend of shawms and bagpipes\, and introspective mix of recorders.Since bringing Cover Story to Colchester Early Music in February Blondel have been busy finding more wonderful music\, making new arrangements\, performing all over the counrty and recording an album. Now they’re back to share their latest discoveries with us!Refreshments will be served after the concert\, with donations to church funds

SUMMARY:Hejira play Joni Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Hejira: Celebrating the Music of Joni Mitchell \nShare this showDates5 Oct 2025Venues:Colchester Arts CentreCategories:JazzTickets £23.50 / £21.50 concessions.Doors open 7pm\, starts 7.30pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \n‘Hejira’ is an outstanding 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell\, mostly from the late ‘70s. \nHaving released the albums ‘Court And Spark’ ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’ and ‘Hejira’\, Joni toured briefly in 1979 with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous musicians (Pat Metheny\, Lyle Mays\, Michael Brecker\, Jaco Pastorius and Don Alias). The tour was recorded\, producing the much-lauded live album\, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from these works that the band Hejira is drawing the spirit and body of its repertoire. \nComprising highly experienced\, world class musicians\, Hejira is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has – in her own way – assimilated the poise\, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals\, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. \nExpect an evening of the truly great songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue\, such as ‘Amelia’\, ‘Help Me’\, ‘A Case Of You’\, ‘Song For Sharon’\, ‘Hissing of Summer Lawns’ ‘Hejira’\, ‘Free Man in Paris’ etc.! \nHattie Whitehead ~ vocals & guitarOllie Weston ~ tenor & soprano saxophonesChris Eldred ~ keyboardsPete Oxley ~ guitarDave Jones ~ bassRick Finlay ~ drumsMarc Cecil ~ percussion \nHave a listen…Just Like This Train:https://youtu.be/DURr8Mr-POU?si=gga1vTuU0efwRGbf \nFree Man In Paris:https://youtu.be/Mc48imlvsU4?si=WLAGYcijBv_SX11u \nIn France They Kiss On Main Street:https://youtu.be/dTjfE9F2KIE?si=2gztadxyDiWB5S-4

SUMMARY:Brewhouse Wenesday Reels- Movie and Pizza Night
DESCRIPTION:Following on from last Wednesday’s screening of Get Out (2017)\, as part of our Horror Film Season this October\, I’ll be showing The People Under The Stairs(15) (1991) next Wednesday at Queen St Brewhouse at 7:30pm. The People Under The Stairs is a horror comedy film written and directed by Wes Craven (Nightmare On Elm Street\, 1984) and starring Brandon Adams\, Everett McGill\, Wendy Robie\, Ving Rhames and A. J. Langer. The plot follows a young boy and two thieves who break into a house owned by the neighbourhood’s landlord and discover a dark secret hidden beneath the house. Wes Craven’s classic film is widely recognised as an underrated gem in the horror genre and his body of work. \nIn a local community in the heart of Los Angeles\,California\, a young African-American boy called Poindexter “Fool” Williams (Brandon Adams) and his family are close to being evicted by their white landlords Eldon Robeson (Everett McGill) and Mrs. Robeson (Wendy Robie). A friend of Fool’s family Leroy (Ving Rhames) suggests that he and an associate of his\, along with Fool’s help\, break into the Robeson’s house to steal a collection of gold coins to save Fool’s family and his dying mother. When Fool breaks into the house\, he finds himself trapped inside due to the Robeson’s extra security and learns about the couple’s dark and sinister lifestyle. As Fool seeks a way out\, he meets Alice (A. J. Langer)\, the Robeson’s daughter\, who tries to help him escape. \nAccording to director Wes Craven\, The People Under The Stairs was inspired by a real-life story about two thieves who broke into a house and discovered two children who had been held captive. The irony of the situation intrigued Craven\, where the burglers were not the real monsters but the family they targeted who looked ordinary on the surface. This formed the basis of the film’s story about corruption hidden within a wealthy facades including themes of gentrification\, racism and class disparity. Jonny Coleman of LA Weekly called the film “a satire of late capitalism specifically in an L.A. run ragged by the free market of the ’80s and the violence it created” and compared the Robeson’s to the Reagans. On a director’s commentary track for the film’s Blu Ray release in 2015\, Craven describes the Robeson’s house as representing “the whole society of the United States”.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Laura Purcell Hosted by JJA Harwood
DESCRIPTION:What a treat to have Laura Purcell talk about the follow-up to her first novel The Silent Companions. That novel was one of her most popular and we can’t wait to read The House of Splinters. The evening will be hosted by fellow author JJA Harwood. If you love a classily written haunted house mystery\, some early readers have promised the new novel will be even better. A new generation returns to the Bridge to rescue it from ruin\, only for buried secrets and past injustices to lay their chill hand upon the families hopes. A perfect blend of the picturesque\, the supernatural and dark folk-lore. Are the children safe in the shadow of “the silent companions”? Don’t miss this spooky\, gothic masterpiece.Doors will open at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. Tickets are £5 or £3 for people with the Waterstones Plus card\, and you can purchase the book and ticket option for £20.

SUMMARY:A Musical Iliad
DESCRIPTION:“It was the tenth year of the siege of Troy\, the year that Calchas\, the soothsayer\, had predicted that the city would fall.”Paris of Troy chose Aphrodite the Goddess of Love as the fairest of all and gained Helen\, the most beautiful woman in the world\, as his reward. However Helen’s furious husband\, determined to get her back\, assembled a fleet of a thousand ships\, sailed to Troy and laid siege to the city. Now\, all the mightiest Princes of Ancient Greece are camped before Troy’s high walls in their black\, beached ships.“A unique\, powerful and compelling piece of time travel.”“It was breathtaking and awesome!”Award-winning storyteller Clare Goodall and historical musician Lizzie Gutteridge combine forces to bring you an epic tale of love\, tragedy and loss in an energetic and punchy adaptation\, where the characters come to life even if that life then ends brutally in bloodshed.Atmospheric musical accompaniment adds to the impact\, with a mixture of ancient Greek music and improvisation on aulos (ancient double pipes) and lyres. This is the epic that everyone has heard of but few have read. Our adaptation brings it to life\, showing why it’s been so well known for 3\,000 years\, and how it deals with issues that are still relevant today…This event is in our main downstairs gallery\, with step-free access via the back gate
