SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

SUMMARY:Jane Eyre
DESCRIPTION:A Mercury Production \nOne woman’s fight for a life that is worthy of her courage\, and a love that is worthy of her heart. \nOrphaned as a young girl\, the passionate and sensitive Jane longs to escape the clutches of her cruel aunt. \nFreedom beckons when she is offered the job of a governess in the house of the brooding and secretive Mr Rochester. \nAs intrigue turns to attraction\, Jane finds herself drawn in by Rochester’s mercurial charm. But when the truth finally comes out\, she will be forced to choose between the man she wants\, and the woman she wants to be. \nNearly two centuries on\, Charlotte Brontë’s groundbreaking story is as thrilling and relevant as ever in this bold production directed by 2025 RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award-winner Lily Dyble\, based on Sally Cookson\, Mike Akers and the original company’s trailblazing adaptation.

SUMMARY:New Face for Leprosy Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This October\, the New Face for Leprosy exhibition comes to Colchester Library for a free\, month-long public exhibition exploring the lives and experiences of people affected by leprosy. \nThe project was conceived in 2019 by Emeritus Professor Diana Lockwood to challenge some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. \nWorking with photographer Tom Bradley\, the project visited Lepra’s programmes in India and Bangladesh\, meeting people affected by leprosy and recording their stories as they dealt with the physical\, social and emotional impact of diagnosis. \nBradley’s portraits aim to present the people photographed\, first and foremost\, as individuals\, challenging some of the images traditionally associated with leprosy and showing people living independent\, fulfilling lives. \nAlongside the photography\, the Colchester exhibition will feature artefacts from Lepra’s archives\, looking back at the organisation’s history and its work throughout the 20th century to improve the lives of people affected by leprosy and develop new treatments. \nThe exhibition is free to visit\, and no booking or ticket is required. \nTwo special events will also take place during the exhibition\, including a talk on Lepra’s history on Wednesday 21 October and a children’s storytelling session on Friday 30 October.

SUMMARY:Raku Club - Communal Firing\, Session 2
DESCRIPTION:**Please Read Full Description Before Submitting Your Order** \nPlease Note: This Communal Raku Firing Session is held at Cuckoo Farm Studios . \nLed by Peter Jones with support from Makerspace Technician Ed Dan — we supply all the Raku glazes\, materials and fire — you just need to bring your ceramics! \nIMPORTANT NOTES:– Booking for the course will be closed 5 working days prior to the session date– A minimum of 5 attendees need to sign up in advance for it to go ahead– If cancelled\, members will be informed and refunded– Otherwise no refunds or transfers– Attendees must be aged 18+– We provide an optional additional Raku Club – Hand-building session for those needing support on how to hand build clay objects suitable for Raku firing. See here for dates .– You will be working outside\, so please dress appropriately– Vegan soup\, sourdough bread and drinks provided. Feel free to bring your own snacks.– Raku firing is a rapid process\, only a few objects at a time will be able to be fired; this means the session will be extended over the whole day– The process has limits in terms of object size and suits objects that are not too big\, a size of H200mm vase form is approximately the largest that can be managed safely \nABOUT RAKU: Raku is a rapid low-firing process that is inspired by the traditional Japanese Raku firing. Western-style Raku involves removing pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat around 1000 centigrade and placing it into containers with combustible materials such as sawdust. Once the materials ignite\, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colours in glazes and clay bodies. The thermal shock of this also produces cracking/crazing\, producing unexpected outcomes. \nIf you have any questions regarding the course\, please email: hello@makercampus.co.uk \nAbout the Artist Leading The Session: Led by Peter Jones\, a ceramic artist who has run his own studio for over 26 years. He has exhibited widely and is currently an associate artist for the British ceramics biennial\, and consults and assist on many technical aspects of ceramics for artists and organisations. He was senior technician at Colchester Art school\, teaching the 3D Design and Craft Degree. \nNo Refunds or Ticket Transfers: Our policy: www.makercampus.co.uk/refunds-policy \nJoin Our Creative Community: Enjoy up to 50% off classes and 24/7 access to our space and equipment. The running time is approximately 1 hour 10 minutes and age guidance is 12+. \nPlease note that the production contains strong language and themes of suicide\, death\, and grief. SUMMARY:The Delines at Arts Centre - Colchester
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £27.50.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \nThe Delines were formed after Richmond Fontaine singer/songwriter\, Willy Vlautin\, heard singer\, Amy Boone (The Damnations)\, sing just one single ballad. He was so moved by her voice that he secretly wrote her songs for over a year before approaching her to start a band. Lucky for all she liked what she heard and The Delines were formed. \nFontaine’s Sean Oldham on drums\, Freddie Trujillo on bass\, Vlautin on guitar\, and multi-instrumentalist Cory Gray on keyboards and horns. \nVlautin is no stranger to critical acclaim in the US\, UK\, and Europe\, enjoying cult success and rave reviews from the likes of the New York Times\, Washington Post\, Uncut\, MOJO\, Hot Press\, Rolling Stone and the Wall Street Journal\, both as a novelist with seven books under his belt\, and as the former front man/songwriter of the Americana outfit Richmond Fontaine who produced eleven acclaimed studio albums. Three of his novels have been turned into feature films: The Motel Life\, Lean on Pete\, and The Night Always Comes. Ursula K. Le Guin said this of Vlautin’s writing\, “Willy Vlautin is one of the bravest novelists writing… An unsentimental Steinbeck\, a heartbroken Haruf\, Willy Vlautin tells us who really lives now in our America\, our city in ruins.” \nhttps://www.thedelines.com/ \n“The Delines’ exemplary seventh album… Vlautin’s latest pin-sharp vignettes of drifters\, con artists and the left behind… Behind Vlautin’s writing and Amy Boone’s poised\, soulful delivery\, Cory Gray’s horns swoon and sway in sympathy.” Uncut – 9/10 \n“With its soft-edged brass\, Wichita Lineman twangs and soft-purring organ\, the perfectly weighted\, often filmic music is impeccable\, short instrumental pieces punctuating episodic\, detail-rich character studies which singer Amy Boone delivers with her usual flair and poise.” MOJO – 4 stars **** \n“Stunning doesn’t begin to cover it… Over the last couple of albums there has been a growing sophistication in the way Willy Vlautin writes\, and in how The Delines interpret his stories\, and this is another step forward in that process.” Americana UK – 9/10
