SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

SUMMARY:New Face for Leprosy Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This October\, the New Face for Leprosy exhibition comes to Colchester Library for a free\, month-long public exhibition exploring the lives and experiences of people affected by leprosy. \nThe project was conceived in 2019 by Emeritus Professor Diana Lockwood to challenge some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. \nWorking with photographer Tom Bradley\, the project visited Lepra’s programmes in India and Bangladesh\, meeting people affected by leprosy and recording their stories as they dealt with the physical\, social and emotional impact of diagnosis. \nBradley’s portraits aim to present the people photographed\, first and foremost\, as individuals\, challenging some of the images traditionally associated with leprosy and showing people living independent\, fulfilling lives. \nAlongside the photography\, the Colchester exhibition will feature artefacts from Lepra’s archives\, looking back at the organisation’s history and its work throughout the 20th century to improve the lives of people affected by leprosy and develop new treatments. \nThe exhibition is free to visit\, and no booking or ticket is required. \nTwo special events will also take place during the exhibition\, including a talk on Lepra’s history on Wednesday 21 October and a children’s storytelling session on Friday 30 October.

SUMMARY:Mad Dan Through the Window Album Release
DESCRIPTION:Through the Window – The album by Mad Dan \nThis is a free event to celebrate this original album. There will be opportunities to buy the album on CD or vinyl on the day and Mad Dan will be performing some original tracks for your listening pleasure. \nInsta: mad_dan_music \nAbout us\, Mad Dan\, the band you’ve never heard of…. \nBack in the 1970s\, cousins Chris French and Steve Wells formed a band with Steve’s brother and two others. Writing and performing their own material during the heyday of progressive rock\, they never gained any traction outside a few local gigs. Life intervened but\, four decades later\, Chris and Steve got back together and decided to write and record an album. \nWith home production technology they gradually assembled the material using virtual and real instruments. The next step was to find some good vocalists to sing the lyrics and complete the project. Through family and friends\, contact was made with Jacq Kingsbury\, Matt Burgess and James Gerard who kindly agreed to take part. \nThrough the Window\, the album… \nSteve wrote all the lyrics on the album and Chris did the sleeve artwork and design. The first six songs loosely follow a theme that relates to the conflict between the real world and the online world seen through screens (Through the Window) and the wider ramifications of that conflict. \nMad Dan? Where did the band name come from? Now that would be telling… \nWe can’t wait to see you there. \nSaturday 17th October 12pm til 4pm \nThree Wise Monkeys Colchester (Top Floor) 60 High Street\, Colchester\, CO1 1DN. Please note that there is no lift access to the top floor. Access is via two hand railed flights of stairs.

Join your child as they discover science and history through play\, with plenty of opportunities to get involved\, create and learn side by side at the Natural History Museum. \nThis month\, we’re getting cosy as we explore hibernation. What is it\, and why do some animals sleep for so long? Little explorers will uncover the secrets of the natural world through craft\, counting activities and even den building\, all brought to life through playful\, engaging activities. \nKS1 home educators are welcome at the 11:15 session. Sessions are designed for children and their carers\, creating a relaxed\, small-group experience\, so they aren’t suitable for larger nursery groups\, but we’d be happy to arrange a dedicated session on request. \nFor useful information\, such as how to find us and what facilities the Natural History Museum has\, we recommend reading our Access information. \nSpaces cost £3 per child. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1196380066887744/?event_time_id=1196380073554410

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Linocut
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the exquisite craft of Linocut\, a traditional printmaking technique and a variant of woodcut. \nSuitable for beginners or those wanting to refresh their memory. \nDuring this 3 hour session you will be super inspired! Cut your own design into the linoleum surface and then print onto paper or fabric using our proofing press with support from Makerspace Associate Artist Heidi Sharp. \nAbout the Associate Artist Leading the Session: Heidi studied Fine Art\, and is inspired by the Pop Art movement and enjoys exploring the themes of social media and consumerism when working more conceptually. Printmaking allows her to tap into these themes given its trait of being able to print such large quantities at a fast pace\, reflecting the mass produced element of both areas. \nRegistered Members: Claim 50% discount on non-member price by entering registered email address in the PROMO CODE box at check-out. \nNo Refunds or Ticket Transfers: www.makercampus.co.uk/refunds-policy \nJoin Our Creative Community: Enjoy up to 50% off classes and 24/7 access to our space and equipment. SUMMARY:The Literal Translation
DESCRIPTION:Will Alice learn her Aller from her Avoir\, or will she be forced to resort to dance? \nPerformance Poet\, Alice d’Lumiere\, is an experienced writer and comedienne; however for someone working as a communicator she is\, like many British people\, embarrassingly monolingual. \nIn 2023 Alice was invited to take her Transgender themed show Speaking Out and Fitting In to “Le Printemps Anglophone Festival” in Avignon\, where despite performing a full solo work in English\, she found herself unable to even order a coffee in French without causing chaos. \nThe Literal Translation is her playful\, silly\, but absurdly honest response to this failure; a piece about late life learning\, shifting identity\, non-conforming voices and romanticizing the exotic. \nFor Alice’s last show she learned opera to overcome a childhood fear of singing\, this time her challenge is speaking in another language. \nA bilingual\, autobiographical show combining gender-fluid prose\, verse\, comedy and song with some foolhardy attempts at actual French! \nWriter / Performer: Alice d’Lumiere Movement Director: Angelica Bangs Composer: Tina Gooding Translation Consultant: Katy Salmon \nPay what you can afford Doors open 7.30pm\, Show starts 8pm \nhttps://colchesterartscentre.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/1173668081/events/428731451?_gl=1*1fmywtq*_ga*MTg5MDk5NDk5NS4xNzEzMzQ2ODg0*_ga_Y4V7HBYV3K*czE3ODU4NTIxMTUkbzkxJGcxJHQxNzg1ODUyMjk0JGo2MCRsMCRoMA
