SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

SUMMARY:Against the Tide
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to grow up by the sea today? \nFrom ambition and creativity to isolation and inequality\, explore intimate photographs and firsthand accounts that document what life is really like for young people growing up in coastal Britain. \nAbout the exhibition \nDocumentary photographer Polly Braden and journalist Lisa Bachelor spent more than a year travelling to coastal communities across England\, working closely with young people aged 16–25 using photographs\, film and personal stories to explore their lives. \nCreated as part of The Guardian’s Seascape series\, Against the Tide looks beyond the negative portrayals to reveal a more complicated picture of coastal Britain today. \nAcross Tendring\, Weston-super-Mare\, Scarborough\, Grimsby\, Southend\, Portsmouth\, Whitehaven\, Rhyl and Blackpool\, Polly’s photographs bring us into the lives of a generation growing up in some of the most deprived and often-forgotten places in England. \nAlongside accounts of isolation and lack of opportunity are expressions of resilience\, ambition and hope\, and a clear message: coastal towns are not just sites of decline\, but places of creativity and possibility. \nYoung people involved in this exhibition have created their own photographs\, exchanged ideas with peers and shared their experiences with UK policymakers\, showing how creativity and personal stories together can help inform decisions about coastal communities beyond words and numbers. \nWhat to expect \nDiscover intimate portraits\, honest first-hand accounts and a close-up look at the everyday lives of young people growing up in coastal England. \nPolly’s photographs are paired with the words and experiences of the young people she met\, creating a layered portrait of places that are often overlooked or reduced to stories of decline. \nThese artworks reflect both the challenges and strengths of coastal communities. Young people speak about education\, work\, mental health\, belonging and opportunity. \nThey also share stories of friendship\, creativity\, resilience and pride in where they come from. \nAbout Polly Braden \nPolly Braden is a documentary photographer known for her intimate\, long-term collaborations. \nHer work focuses on overlooked communities and social issues\, and her distinctive style combines quiet observation with deep empathy. \nPolly believes art can do more than tell stories. It gives people a chance to speak for themselves\, encourages empathy and starts conversations about issues that matter. \nWith special thanks to Attwells Solicitors\, Seán Kelly\, and Catherine for their generous contribution towards this exhibition. \n

SUMMARY:Art Show by Nick Mair with Stella Davis
DESCRIPTION:Nick Mair returns to Level Best Art Gallery in Colchester this November for his second exhibition at the gallery\, showing work created in collaboration with Stella Davis. \nNick chooses the subjects for the pictures\, generally drawing inspiration from natural history\, before working with Stella to interpret them through painting. The pair work together once a month at the L’Arche Community in Ipswich\, where Nick lives. \nThe exhibition reflects their collaborative approach\, with each bringing something to the work that\, as Level Best explains\, neither could create alone. \nThe exhibition runs at Level Best Art Gallery from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 28th November 2026.

SUMMARY:Animal Farm
DESCRIPTION:“All animals are equal\, but some are more equal than others.”\nWhen Old Major shares his dream of a Golden Future Time\, the animals of Manor Farm dare to believe that another world is possible. \nChange is in the air. Hooves thunder. Gates are broken. The old order falls\, and the farm is theirs at last. \nBut promises can be rebranded\, rules can be rewritten\, and before long\, the pigs are promising to make Animal Farm great again. \nThis bold and physical retelling of George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a charged\, chaotic and darkly funny exploration of power\, propaganda and the corruption of ideals. In an age of misinformation\, political division and populist rhetoric\, Orwell’s masterpiece feels less like a warning from the past and more like a commentary on the present. \nAfter all\, revolutions don’t belong to heroes. They belong to everyone. \nAdapted from the novel by George Orwell\nDirected by Rich Hay\nPresented by East 15 BA Acting & Fight Performance graduating actors \nTICKETS ON SALE FROM 9AM ON MONDAY 21 SEPTEMBER

SUMMARY:Blow Up – Paul Tunkin (DJ) plus The Forty Fours (Live)
DESCRIPTION:Blow Up returns to Colchester at Three Wise Monkeys Colchester\nwith Blow Up founder Paul Tunkin (DJ set) and The Forty Fours (live) \nColchester was the first town to hold a Blow Up event outside of the weekly London events in the nineties. \nBlow Up\, a bona-fide legendary club night at the centre of the mid-Nineties Brit Pop explosion\, cited as the catalyst and birth place of the BritPop scene\, influencing the style and sound of a generation. Blow Up was voted No.4 in Time Out’s Top Ten Clubs of the 90s\, described as one of ‘5 Classic Clubs of Our Time‘ by Vox Magazine (alongside The Blitz Club\, Shoom\, The Roxy) and as ‘The club that changed the world’ by Melody Maker. Describing Blow Up in Time Out’s London Calling book as “the breeding ground of the Brit Pop sound” and in NME’s Original’s Blow Up was listed as a Top Ten Britpop Moment. In July 2022 Time Out once again listed Blow Up as one of the greatest London clubs of the past 40 years. \nBlow Up has also hosted events around the UK and internationally over the years\, including across Europe\, USA\, Russia and Japan. Whilst the Blow Up club compilations (‘Blow Up A-Go-Go!’ and ‘Blow Up presents Exclusive Blend’) have increased the reach of Blow Up around the world.. \nBlow Up was founded and launched by Paul Tunkin 16th October 1993 at the upstairs function room of a Camden Town pub the Laurel Tree. After just a few months Blow Up had become the epicentre of a seismic musical and stylistic change in what was later called the Britpop scene. From its origins at the Laurel Tree\, Camden Town (1993-1996) to Soho venues the Wag Club (1996-2001)\, the Metro Club (2002-2009\, the Metro which Paul Tunkin co-ran with former Wag Club manager Alan Campbell) Blow Up maintained a weekly club event interspersed with various one-off events. Post the Metro Club’s closure Blow Up took up weekly and monthly residences in various venues including Bar Rumba\, 4 Denmark St and Peckham’s Bussey Building followed by a weekly five year Friday night residency at the St Moritz Club\, Wardour St Soho (2015-2020) once again interspersed with occasional monthly events including the Troubadour London. Blow Up ran continuous weekly events until the nightlife lockdown in 2020 and finally returned for a three night residency at Vout O Reenee’s London (Oct – December 2022). November 2023 saw the first part of the Blow Up 30 year celebrations with a sold out club and live event at Jamboree Kings Cross. Whilst in May 2024 saw Blow Up take to the roof terrace of members club the Century in Soho as part 2 of our 30th celebrations. \nHope that you can join us for what promises to be another special night.

SUMMARY:Paint a Modern Self-Portrait in Oils
DESCRIPTION:Discover a more expressive approach to self-portraiture in this hands-on oil painting workshop\, where you’ll explore how a portrait can capture character\, emotion and identity without needing to look exactly like you. \nInspired by modern artists including Amedeo Modigliani and Henri Matisse\, you’ll explore simplified forms\, expressive colour\, distortion and visible brushwork. \nThere’s no pressure to create a perfect likeness! Working from your own reflection in a mirror\, you’ll learn how to observe the structure and features of your face before interpreting and exaggerating what you see in your own way. \nWhat to expect \nThe session begins with a short introduction to modern self-portraiture and a demonstration of how to establish the face using shape and colour. \nYou’ll then create your own self-portrait with individual guidance throughout\, experimenting with your features\, clothing\, background and colour to make the portrait personal. \nYou’ll leave with your own modern self-portrait in oils and greater confidence in approaching portrait painting. \nGood to know \nBasic materials provided. Food and drink is also available for purchase throughout the session from our cafés. \nThis workshop is suitable for ages 16+ and is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience of oil painting. \nAbout your tutor \nDenisa Mansfield is an artist whose work explores expressive colour\, movement\, and emotion through the language of Impressionism and abstraction. \nShe works primarily in oils\, with a focus on how traditional methods can be reinterpreted in contemporary ways. Her practice celebrates curiosity\, creative risk-taking\, and the joy of discovery through paint.

SUMMARY:Jumbo: The White Elephant That Built the Modern State Talk with David Grocott
DESCRIPTION:Love it or loathe it\, Jumbo has a story to tell. \nDiscover how Colchester’s iconic water tower became the centre of a Victorian debate about public health\, taxation and the role of local government with historian and researcher David Grocott. \nToday\, Colchester’s Jumbo Water Tower is a much-loved local landmark. But when it was completed in 1883\, not everyone was impressed. Some saw it as an extravagant waste of public money\, and its famous nickname is widely believed to have originated from a local clergyman who compared it to a “white elephant”. \nSo why was Jumbo built\, who opposed it\, and what does its story reveal about Victorian society? \nThis talk explores the controversy surrounding Jumbo against the backdrop of nineteenth-century public health reform. As towns grew rapidly\, inadequate sanitation and unsafe water supplies left communities vulnerable to devastating diseases\, including cholera. New legislation\, including the Public Health Acts of 1848 and 1875\, increasingly placed responsibility for clean water\, drainage and sewerage in the hands of local authorities. \nColchester’s modern waterworks\, culminating in the construction of Jumbo\, reflected this changing approach. While supporters argued that a reliable water supply was essential to public health and the town’s prosperity\, critics questioned whether ratepayers should be forced to fund such an ambitious project through local taxation. \nAt the heart of the debate was a bigger question: how far should public authorities go in providing for the common good? \nDiscover how Jumbo became a symbol of changing attitudes towards government\, public spending and civic responsibility\, and why this Victorian engineering landmark represents much more than a tower. Its story offers a fascinating insight into the tensions between private interests and public welfare that continue to shape society today. \nThis event is for ages 16+. \n  \nAbout David Grocott \nDavid Grocott is a historian and researcher whose work explores the mythologies of English radicalism and the ways in which the past is continually reimagined as a tool for political and cultural change.
