SUMMARY:Simon Carter: From the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

SUMMARY:Against the Tide
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to grow up by the sea today? \nFrom ambition and creativity to isolation and inequality\, explore intimate photographs and firsthand accounts that document what life is really like for young people growing up in coastal Britain. \nAbout the exhibition \nDocumentary photographer Polly Braden and journalist Lisa Bachelor spent more than a year travelling to coastal communities across England\, working closely with young people aged 16–25 using photographs\, film and personal stories to explore their lives. \nCreated as part of The Guardian’s Seascape series\, Against the Tide looks beyond the negative portrayals to reveal a more complicated picture of coastal Britain today. \nAcross Tendring\, Weston-super-Mare\, Scarborough\, Grimsby\, Southend\, Portsmouth\, Whitehaven\, Rhyl and Blackpool\, Polly’s photographs bring us into the lives of a generation growing up in some of the most deprived and often-forgotten places in England. \nAlongside accounts of isolation and lack of opportunity are expressions of resilience\, ambition and hope\, and a clear message: coastal towns are not just sites of decline\, but places of creativity and possibility. \nYoung people involved in this exhibition have created their own photographs\, exchanged ideas with peers and shared their experiences with UK policymakers\, showing how creativity and personal stories together can help inform decisions about coastal communities beyond words and numbers. \nWhat to expect \nDiscover intimate portraits\, honest first-hand accounts and a close-up look at the everyday lives of young people growing up in coastal England. \nPolly’s photographs are paired with the words and experiences of the young people she met\, creating a layered portrait of places that are often overlooked or reduced to stories of decline. \nThese artworks reflect both the challenges and strengths of coastal communities. Young people speak about education\, work\, mental health\, belonging and opportunity. \nThey also share stories of friendship\, creativity\, resilience and pride in where they come from. \nAbout Polly Braden \nPolly Braden is a documentary photographer known for her intimate\, long-term collaborations. \nHer work focuses on overlooked communities and social issues\, and her distinctive style combines quiet observation with deep empathy. \nPolly believes art can do more than tell stories. It gives people a chance to speak for themselves\, encourages empathy and starts conversations about issues that matter. \nWith special thanks to Attwells Solicitors\, Seán Kelly\, and Catherine for their generous contribution towards this exhibition. \n

SUMMARY:Andy Zaltzman: 2026 – The Certifiable History
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £18.50\nDoors 8pm\, show 8.30pm\nThis show is for a seated audience\n\nAndy Zaltzman – host of The News Quiz and The Bugle podcast\, statistician on Test Match Special\, Taskmaster series 18 champion – returns with his stand-up review of the global year\, for the first time this decade. \n\nFollowing his sell-out The Zaltgeist tour show\, Andy will assess the state of our world-renowned planet at the conclusion of another furiously odd year\, in his unique comedic style. \n\nEven the biggest 2026 fans would concede that it has been far from flawless as a year\, even in the context of this incurable buffoon of a decade. Humanity has stared into the ravening maw of Artificial Intelligence\, wondering whether or not it has already eaten us. Across the world\, existential crises have become the must-have accessories for nations\, art forms\, sports and species. \n\nAndy will attempt to harness the powers of modern and ancient technologies to find shards of genuine hope amongst the cavalcade of cantankerousness\, before 2026 is certifiably consigned to the history books\, where it emphatically belongs. \n\n“Zaltzman is a master of lacerating satire mixed with extreme silliness” – The Mail On Sunday \n\n“So sharp you can cut a diamond with it” – Evening Standard \n\n“Properly funny… a true original and a true delight” – The Times

SUMMARY:Narthen: Icicles & Inglenooks
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £15/£14 concs\nDoors 7.30pm\, show 8pm\n\nThis gig is for a seated audience \nThe winter season whilst often cold can be thawed by heart lifting music that includes polyphonic\, four-part\, unaccompanied carols from Yorkshire and beyond and tunes that make you want to dance. Thrown into this music season’s mix may include irreverent songs about pheasants and other seasonal fair. Their annual show aims to thaw your icicles and warm your inglenooks. \nMulti-instrumentalists and singers\, the range of sound that they are able to produce is mind boggling. There is a huge dollop of humour in their shows and a wide range of material.\nTheir performances at Folk Weekend Oxford resulted in a new description “The mighty Narthen”. \nThe term ‘Narthen’ is akin to ‘Now then’\, ‘what gives’\, ‘what’s happening now?’. Here is what’s happening now. Our aim\, no matter the line-up\, has always been to sing and play the songs and tunes that reflect our individual personalities and tastes. From the tradition through to modern times\, anything goes\, and that material is expressed through vocal harmony and a large variety of instruments. All sing\, all play and the instruments include\, Soprano sax\, clarinet\, whistles\, fiddles\, viola\, hammer dulcimer\, tenor guitar\, diatonic accordeon and hurdy gurdy. Expect the unexpected from Jo Freya\, Fi Fraser\, Sarah Matthews and Doug Eunson. \nJo Freya – Soprano Sax\, Clarinet\, Whistles and vocals\nFi Fraser – Hammered Dulcimer\, Fiddle\, Vocals\nSarah Matthews – Violin\, Viola\, Vocals\nDoug Eunson- Diatonic Accordeon\, Hurdy-Gurdy\, Vocals

For the course option you will need to add all four dates to your basket. \nSession Rotation \n\nLets Draw Together – collaborative drawing and exploration of drawing tools using still life\nLet’s See – observational drawing from images and techniques to help\nLet’s Not Be Precious – speed drawing from life\nLet’s Make a Tonal Sketch – exploring observational drawing from images focusing on values\n\nBasic materials provided. Food and drink is also available for purchase throughout the session from our cafes. This workshop is suitable for ages 14+. \nWhat is observational drawing? \nObservational drawing is the practice of sketching from real-life subjects\, focusing on what you see rather than drawing from imagination. \nIt encourages a deeper connection to your surroundings\, helping you notice details in light\, texture\, form and composition that often go unnoticed in daily life. \nAbout your tutor \nTina Bullen is from Colchester and describes herself as an ‘artist who also teaches’. Art for Tina is a vehicle; a vehicle for expression\, connection and joy. \nHer work is strongly rooted within nature and her environment. She works in many mediums but mainly in oils\, pastels\, acrylics and pen.
