SUMMARY:Belinda O'Hooley & Jackie Oates @ COLCHESTER Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Two of British folk’s most distinctive and highly-regarded artists join together in a brand-new\, inspired collaboration. \nBelinda O’Hooley\, a renowned pianist\, singer and composer\, is best known as one half of O’Hooley & Tidow\, who rose tointernational prominence for writing and performing the theme to the hit TV series Gentleman Jack (which also led to anacting role for Belinda on the iconic TV drama Happy Valley). \nDrawing on her heritage in the west of Ireland\, Belinda’s music showcases her unique\, minimalist and deeply expressivestyle. The first woman in her family to reclaim a previously all-male tradition\, she has found the freedom to interpret themusic of her ancestors in her very own\, singular way. \nBelinda is also known for her inventive\, minimalist\, sometimes flamboyant accompanying of folk luminaries includingRufus Wainwright and Nic Jones. \nJackie Oates is a respected and sought-after singer\, fiddle player\, song-writer and multi-instrumentalist\, widely knownfor her tender\, arresting interpretations of traditional folk songs. A winner of two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards\, Jackie hasreleased numerous acclaimed albums including eight solo records. Jackie works on a steady stream of commissionswhich have recently ranged as widely as BBC Radio 3\, The Orchestra of The Swan\, LUSH Handmade Sound\, and YotoMusic player for children. \nDuring 18 months as Artist In Residence at The Museum Of English Rural Life\, Jackie spent countless hours in themuseum’s library researching the seldom explored area of English Lace Telling songs – a tradition of singing toaccompany women’s textile work – from which her album Needle Pin\, Needle Pin with John Spiers and her Radio BalladThe Lacemakers\, were the results. \nJackie’s music for children and families is cherished by many. Her collection of traditional sleep songs in her 2013 albumLullabies\, continues to be the soundtrack to many a bedtime\, and most recently Jackie has collaborated with Nick Hart onhis traditional Nursery Rhyme project. Those with pre-school children are familiar with Jackie’s vocal and instrumentalcontributions to the CBeebies smash hit Nick Cope’s Popcast. \nThe intuitive and responsive interplay between Belinda and Jackie\, two musicians at the height of their power\, makes fora compelling live experience.

SUMMARY:The Literal Translation
DESCRIPTION:Will Alice learn her Aller from her Avoir\, or will she be forced to resort to dance? \nPerformance Poet\, Alice d’Lumiere\, is an experienced writer and comedienne; however for someone working as a communicator she is\, like many British people\, embarrassingly monolingual. \nIn 2023 Alice was invited to take her Transgender themed show Speaking Out and Fitting In to “Le Printemps Anglophone Festival” in Avignon\, where despite performing a full solo work in English\, she found herself unable to even order a coffee in French without causing chaos. \nThe Literal Translation is her playful\, silly\, but absurdly honest response to this failure; a piece about late life learning\, shifting identity\, non-conforming voices and romanticizing the exotic. \nFor Alice’s last show she learned opera to overcome a childhood fear of singing\, this time her challenge is speaking in another language. \nA bilingual\, autobiographical show combining gender-fluid prose\, verse\, comedy and song with some foolhardy attempts at actual French! \nWriter / Performer: Alice d’Lumiere Movement Director: Angelica Bangs Composer: Tina Gooding Translation Consultant: Katy Salmon \nPay what you can afford Doors open 7.30pm\, Show starts 8pm \nhttps://colchesterartscentre.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/1173668081/events/428731451?_gl=1*1fmywtq*_ga*MTg5MDk5NDk5NS4xNzEzMzQ2ODg0*_ga_Y4V7HBYV3K*czE3ODU4NTIxMTUkbzkxJGcxJHQxNzg1ODUyMjk0JGo2MCRsMCRoMA

SUMMARY:Jana Varga: "The stuff Carnegie Hall shows are made of." - FATEA. £20 adv. £22 door
DESCRIPTION:Last here performing as a member of the Joni Reimagined Quartet\, when she wowed the audience with her superb vocals\, be prepared once more to be mesmerised and captivated by the voice of Jana Varga. \nCiting a mixture of influences – from classical music to songwriters such as Janis Ian\, James Taylor\, and the well-travelled folk of Paul Simon – Jana’s music transcends boundaries and takes audiences on a timeless journey. \nWith a genuine passion for storytelling\, Jana weaves rich narratives into every note\, evoking emotions and connecting listeners to the heart and soul of her music. She has her own distinct voice that continues to evolve. \nRaised on the outskirts of Bratislava and born into a musical family\, Jana was immersed in music from a young age. As a child\, she was already performing traditional Slovak songs and went on to study classical music in Austria and France. In 2014 she became a flautist in the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra in Czechia\, when she decided to pursue the career of a singer-songwriter and moved to London. \nCo-produced by Fred Mollin (Billy Joel\, Jimmy Webb) and nominated in the Emerging Artist category of the British Blues Awards\, Jana’s 2022 debut album\, Foreigner Face\, was described as a “fascinating mixture of styles and very original” by Paul Sexton (BBC Billboard) and “amazingly beautiful” by songwriting legend Janis Ian. \nJana’s subsequent headline tour introduced her music to a wider UK audience and saw her first international collaboration with the Varga Quartett Wien\, a noted Austrian classical string quartet based in Vienna and led by her brother\, Pavol. \nPerformances alongside platinum-selling artist Rumer and other esteemed vocalists have garnered Jana international acclaim. Notably\, in late 2023\, she graced the stage at the O2 Indigo as part of Rumer’s band\, captivating audiences both as an opening act and a key member of the ensemble. \nEarlier this year\, Jana released Chicory\, which was described by one music critic as “rich in cinematic overtones”\, and she’ll be performing material from that eponymous album\, plus songs from Foreigner Face and material by iconic performers such as Joni Mitchell\, Paul Simon\, Dusty Springfield\, and Carly Simon. \nFor this intimate\, stripped-back show\, Jana is accompanied by pianist Sam Watts.

SUMMARY:Counter's Creek
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £16/£15 concs\nDoors 7.30pm\, show 8pm\nThis gig is for a seated audience\n\nCounter's Creek is an acoustic folk band based in London who make original music inspired by the folk music of the British Isles and beyond. Jigs\, reels\, grooves from Eastern Europe & West Africa\, catchy melodies with closely interwoven harmonies allied to a real sense of swing and dance energy. \nWhistle player Jonathan Taylor has worked in many different musical genres: best known as a jazz pianist who's played with artists such as Pee Wee Ellis\, Fred Wesley\, Ruby Turner and various British jazz luminaries\, he's also co-founder of Tango Siempre\, appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and arranged music for Robert Wyatt. \nSinger Ben Cox studied Jazz at Guildhall School of Music & Drama\, has played at major Jazz festivals with The Ben Cox Band\, is currently musical director of four choirs in London and is an accomplished whistle/flute/harmonium player. \nFiddler Tom Newell is known for his work with Effra who perform regularly at UK folk festivals as well as The Ceilidh Liberation Front\, Alex Mendham & His Orchestra and pop acts including Muse\, One Direction and Lana Del Rey. He also plays banjo and mandolin (not to mention charango and mouth harp). \nGuitarist Moss Freed plays with jazz/folk group Flekd\, the Spike Orchestra\, has recorded for John Zorn’s Tzadik label and has recently completed a PhD at Hull University… \nFour musicians from different backgrounds\, united by a love of acoustic folk music\, great tunes and earthy dance grooves. \nThe name Counter's Creek refers to one of London's old rivers that used to flow from Kensal Green into the Thames. It has gradually disappeared over the last two centuries\, first converted into a canal after which parts of it were filled in. These rivers still exist in some form underneath London’s busy streets and like the new weird and wonderful musical projects in the city\, bubble up to the surface every now and then… \n\nhttps://www.counterscreekmusic.com/\n\nSupport: Sinead Orme\n\nSinéad is an Irish singer-songwriter who lives in Wivenhoe. She has played for us before a number of times and her recently released CD ‘Spindrift’ demonstrates her virtuosity as a singer-songwriter.

SUMMARY:(a play in a) DARK ROOM
DESCRIPTION:“Fuck you. Try all you want. We’re not going anywhere.” \nWORLD PREMIERE: In this visceral\, sensory-driven\, psychological thriller\, Davis the Janitor cleans up all sorts of bodily fluids at his night job in a dark room. Piss\, cum\, shit\, vomit\, poppers – no stain can scare off Davis\, the self-proclaimed “pig of pigs”… until a lingering violent threat forces Davis to confront the only stain he cannot clean. \n(a play in a) DARK ROOM is an intense\, disturbing\, often funny\, and unapologetically messy exploration of queerness. Written and performed by multi-award-winning-queer activist Dr.Pants\, the show blends autotheory\, multimedia visuals\, dynamic movement\, and an original electronic score to challenge respectability politics\, confront trauma\, and find hope. \nPerformer and writer Dr.Pants is critically acclaimed worldwide for the “sheer bravery” (Watermark News) in his writing and performance. He is described by critics as being “immeasurably talented” (Broadway World)\, “sharp\, quick\, and uncompromising” (GSCENE)\, and “bold\, brazen and stratospherically cheeky\, concealing beneath the girth of energy a good heart and a probing mind.” (Lost in Theatreland). Dr.Pants has single-handedly raised over £1000+ for LGBTQ+ charities worldwide\, including the WR1 Foundation\, The University of Essex’s Student Union\, LGBT+ Health and Wellbeing Scotland\, and the Center of Orlando. His play Pup Play won seven international fringe awards and a further five nominations. Dr.Pants was runner-up for Activist of the Year at the National Queer Student Awards.
