After a Q&A\, you will then be taken down into the Roman Vaults\, the foundations of the Temple of Claudius\, and up the Great Stairs. As our Wi-Fi does not extend underground\, we have signs and a pre-recorded\, captioned video that offer more fascinating insights. The tour ends on the Castle’s first floor galleries\, where you can explore our array of fascinating displays. \nThe Talk + Tour is suitable for ages 4+. \nPlease note the tour includes climbing uneven stairs with no lift access\, crouching to pass through low archways\, and some uneven flooring underfoot. For anyone who would find this inaccessible\, a captioned\, virtual guided tour is available. It costs £1.50 to hire\, and you can request it at reception. From assisting his life-long friend and mentor\, Decebal\, in claiming the throne\, following the unexpected death of their king Duras\, we see them consolidate power among the Dacian tribes\, outmaneuver the Roman emperor Domitian\, to pressure Rome into signing a treaty on terms extremely favourable to the ascendant Dacian kingdom and begin to build Dacian fortifications across the lands north of the Danube. The story follows their early victories and subsequent changes in fortune with the rise of a new Roman emperor and seasoned general\, Trajan\, as he sets his sights on Dacian conquest. DESCRIPTION:Backed by a top-drawer band with impressive CVs to match\, prepare to embark on a soulful journey with outstanding vocalist Noel McCalla\, who will perform his own authentic and diverse original compositions as well as songs by soul superstars such as Al Green\, Bill Withers\, Marvin Gaye\, and Curtis Mayfield\, plus performers like Sting. \nDescribed by Blues & Soul magazine as “one of Britain’s best soul singers”\, Noel is a world-class vocalist and frontman; his captivating control over the band and his audience interaction and involvement make for an exhilarating musical experience. \nPerforming a combination of amazing ‘groove’-based originals and some timeless soul standards in his own fiery\, high-energy style\, if you love imaginative composition mixed with an exciting vocal performance by an enormously gifted songwriter\, be there!  \n​NOEL McCALLANoel’s career started in the 70s with the band Moon\, who recorded two albums for Epic Records. When Moon disbanded in 1976\, Noel released a solo album\, Night Time Emotion\, produced by Trevor Rabin. He also worked and toured America with Sniff ‘n’ the Tears\, where his voice was integral on the hit single Driver’s Seat. \nIn the early 80s\, Noel formed Contact (subsequently renamed McCalla) and released the critically acclaimed Push and Pull\, followed by the equally well-received Hot from the Smoke. \n​As well as previous collaborations with master bassist Alfonso Johnson\, singer/songwriter Paul Weller\, and Dave Lewis 1 Up\, Noel really began garnering more public attention and acclaim in the mid-80s with the seminal jazz-funk band Morrissey Mullen\, providing vocals on their 1985 release\, This Must Be The Place.  \nHe did likewise on the legendary Icelandic jazz-rock band Mezzoforte’s No Limits\, while also providing vocals on Mike Rutherford’s highly acclaimed album\, Smallcreep’s Day. \n​From the early 90s\, Noel’s searing\, soulful vocals were featured with the iconic Manfred Mann’s Earth Band for more than 19 years and\, more recently\, with the Derek Nash Funk Experience\, and City Funk Orchestra. \n​Currently\, Noel is arguably best known as co-leader with Jools Holland’s lead saxophonist Derek Nash of the enormously popular The Wonder of Stevie show. \n​​Noel McCalla (Vocals\, Tim Cansfield (Guitar)\, Henry Thomas (Bass Guitar)\, Nic France (Drums)

From Radiohead (their ‘guitars phase’\, at least) to Muse\, Coldplay and countless others\, it’s become a touchstone for every indie band since the 90s that’s ever featured male falsetto vocals. It didn’t exactly set the world alight when it first came out – it barely troubled the charts and divided critics – but has risen in stature enormously over time. From the roiling rhythms and vocal intensity of the title track\, to the stately ‘So Real’ and haunting ‘Dream Brother’\, there’s some properly hefty songwriting on show here. And even if you can happily go to your grave without hearing Buckley’s cover of ‘Hallelujah’ ever again\, after its use in countless films about angsty couples and reality TV montages (trust us\, we’re with you) hearing in context is a powerful reminder of just how magisterial it really is. This winter\, come along to hear Grace beneath vaulted ceilings\, meet fellow fans of the record and commune.\n\nThe album playback will be followed by a Q&A session.\n\nAfter a short break\, we'll follow the album with our usual ‘Dead Wax’ session.\nBring along a vinyl disc of your choice and hear a track from it played through the Arts Centre PA. DESCRIPTION:Tickets £15 / £14 concessions.\nDoors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.\nThis gig is for a seated audience.\n\nA brand-new trio formed by three seasoned session musicians\, this collaboration between Archie Moss\, Toby Shaer\, and Jack Warnock was born out of a shared love for traditional music from the UK\, Ireland\, and mainland Europe. Since meeting in 2019\, the trio have established themselves not only as dynamic performers but also as sensitive re- interpreters of the tradition. \nEach artist is well respected in their own right: Archie Moss (accordion) is a BBC award- winning musician\, a celebrated composer\, and one of the most in-demand button accordion players in the UK\, has performed alongside Seth Lakeman\, Sam Sweeney\, and Eliza Carthy. \nToby Shaer (fiddle\, flute\, whistles\, cittern) is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, and producer from the southeast of England. Over the past ten years\, he has toured extensively across Europe\, Australia\, and China with revered artists such as Cara Dillon\, McCusker\, McGoldrick\, Doyle\, and\, alongside Archie Moss\, with Sam Kelly & the Lost Boys. \nJack Warnock (guitar\, vocals) hails from Co. Derry in Ireland. An award-winning guitarist and singer\, he is also an avid Gaeilgeoir (Irish speaker)\, performing songs in both Irish and English. His compositions and repertoire are steeped in storytelling as he embraces the lineage of folk music in its truest form. \nThis trio approach their craft and arrangements with delicacy and thought\, drawing influence from a plethora of traditions. A collaboration of three like-minded musicians presenting folk music through a contemporary lens. \n“Jack Warnock's voice could entice the birds from the trees” – Robert McMillen\, The Irish News  \n“Archie Churchill-Moss – Great player\, great tunes” – Mark Radcliffe\, BBC Radio 2 \n\nSarah Graves \n\nSarah plays traditional and original music on the English concertina. In addition she has an eclectic mix of songs both old and new. Sarah is an accomplished player with many years of experience performing on the Essex Folk scene.
