DESCRIPTION:Lepra historian Irene Allen comes to Colchester Library for a special talk exploring the history of the charity. \nTaking place as part of the New Face for Leprosy exhibition\, From Belra to Lepra will look at the organisation’s history and its work to improve the lives of people affected by leprosy. \nThe wider exhibition brings together photography from the New Face for Leprosy project with artefacts from Lepra’s archives\, documenting the organisation’s work and achievements throughout the 20th century. \nThe New Face for Leprosy project was conceived by Emeritus Professor Diana Lockwood and features photography by Tom Bradley\, who travelled to Lepra programmes in India and Bangladesh to meet and photograph people affected by the disease. \nIrene Allen’s talk begins at 4pm on Wednesday 21st October 2026 at Colchester Library.

DESCRIPTION:Through the Window – The album by Mad Dan \nThis is a free event to celebrate this original album.There will be opportunities to buy the album on CD or vinyl on the day and Mad Dan will be performing some original tracks for your listening pleasure. \nInsta: mad_dan_music \nAbout us\, Mad Dan\, the band you’ve never heard of…. \nBack in the 1970s\, cousins Chris French and Steve Wells formed a band with Steve’s brother and two others. Writing and performing their own material during the heyday of progressive rock\, they never gained any traction outside a few local gigs. Life intervened but\, four decades later\, Chris and Steve got back together and decided to write and record an album. \nWith home production technology they gradually assembled the material using virtual and real instruments. The next step was to find some good vocalists to sing the lyrics and complete the project. Through family and friends\, contact was made with Jacq Kingsbury\, Matt Burgess and James Gerard who kindly agreed to take part. \nThrough the Window\, the album… \nSteve wrote all the lyrics on the album and Chris did the sleeve artwork and design. The first six songs loosely follow a theme that relates to the conflict between the real world and the online world seen through screens (Through the Window) and the wider ramifications of that conflict. \nMad Dan? Where did the band name come from? DESCRIPTION:Origami is a paper folding art originally from Japan/China. Learning origami not only helps with hand-eye coordination but improves concentration and problem-solving skills. \nThis ancient art form has been used as meditation\, stress relievers and a fun social activity with friends. \nIn our Origami Workshop\, Lu Yu will guide you step by step through the creation of specific origami shapes\, teaching essential techniques such as valley folds\, mountain folds\, squash folds\, and reverse folds. \nThese foundational skills will help you build confidence and precision in your folding. Once you’ve mastered the basics\, you’ll have the opportunity experiment with your own designs and experience the joy of transforming a simple sheet of paper into something unique. \nOrigami is a powerful tool for mindfulness and mental well-being. Its calming\, repetitive motions help people relax\, focus\, and cope with stress\, making it a valuable activity for your emotional and mental health. \nBasic materials provided. Food and drink is also available for purchase throughout the session from our cafes. This event is suitable for ages 16+. \nAbout your tutor \nLu Yu studied a BA Fine Art at Colchester Institute and won the 2022-2023 Graduate Awards. She is a member of Colchester Art Society\, practicing mainly 3-dimensional forms. \nLu Yu also experiments with different materials including wood\, metal\, ceramic\, plaster and paper. \nHer sculptures have been selected to join Spring and Winter Exhibitions by Colchester Art Society each year with other sculptures being exhibited in Fingringhoe Wick Nature Park\, Marshall Estate and the 60th Essex Art Open Exhibition at Beecroft Art Gallery. \nShe has previously run origami workshops for World Culture Day at the East Bergholt High School and other schools across Essex and London. \nOther activities that have hosted her origami workshops include; the Rice and Spice Festival\, International Women’s Day\, BHM Culture Integration Event\, the Global Village event at Rayleigh and at Jaywick Martello Tower.
