SUMMARY:Non-Fiction Author Richard Negus: Words From the Hedge
DESCRIPTION:Author Talk by Richard Negus discussing non fiction book WORDS FROM THE HEDGE at Red Lion Books \nHedges are as old as civilisation and as emblematic of the British countryside as chalk streams\, hay meadows and oak trees. But unlike woodland and rivers\, farmland hedges remain on the periphery of the public consciousness\, often going unnoticed and almost always underappreciated. \nJoin us for a morning of enlightening\, engaging and entertaining conversation with professional hedgelayer\, conservationist\, writer and author\, Richard Negus. \nIn his book ‘WORDS FROM THE HEDGE – A Hedgelayer’s View of the Countryside’\, Richard takes us on a journey that reveals these ribbons of thorn and barb are so much more than mere decoration or boundary markers. They are essential for much-needed wildlife recovery. Each hedge is a testament to generations of human skill and labour\, requiring ongoing maintenance to survive and thrive. \nRichard has been heralded as “the hedgerow’s one true champion” by celebrated Countryside Writer John Lewis-Stempel\, and his book praised for being “joyful and illuminating” and “an important\, funny and passionate defence of the British countryside”. \nRichard Negus is a former soldier and professional horseman. He now lays hedges for a living and is recognised as one of the country’s leading exponents and practitioners of hedgerow management and rejuvenation. \nHe lives in Suffolk\, co-hosts a weekly podcast – Countryslide – covering British rural life and work\, and writes for publications including The Daily Telegraph\, The Critic and Scribehound.

SUMMARY:Practically Imperfect: writer PL Travers is visited by her creation\, Mary Poppins
DESCRIPTION:“finds new terrain” – The Guardian on The Telling \nThe very private PL Travers lives quietly in Chelsea. Out of the blue\, her very own creation\, Mary Poppins\, suddenly appears in Travers’ study\, asking difficult questions she would rather not answer. Rather than the Banks family\, Mary Poppins has come to sort out the acerbic writer herself. But Travers is a force to be reckoned with too. So who will control the narrative and win the battle of wills? \nThe fun-filled chaos is soundtracked by Mary Poppins who performs the kind of music PL Travers REALLY wanted in the Mary Poppins film (Edwardian songs such as Lily of Laguna). \nA collaboration project between The Telling and Blue Fire Theatre Company. A brand new play with music by award-winning writer Clare Norburn\, directed by BAFTA-nominated BBC director\, Nicholas Renton (Mrs Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters\, Musketeers\, Lewis). Starring acclaimed actor Lottie Walker as PL Travers and actor-musician Joanna Brown as Mary Poppins. \nEach half will be approx 40-45mins with an interval. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1168916785221919/?event_time_id=1168918191888445

SUMMARY:Vinyl Sessions: The The - Soul Mining
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £4Doors open 12pm\, show starts at 12:30pmThis show is for a seated audience. \nThe bar will be open throughout. \nThe The / Soul Mining \nMost of us will muddle through the emotional intensity of late adolescence before moving on with the rest of our lives – but if you’re Matt Johnson\, you shut yourself away in the bedroom above the Stratford pub your parents run\, and channel all that self-doubt and sense of isolation into what will eventually become the deeply introspective lyrics of your debut album. ‘The The’ was essentially a loose collective of mates and session musicians with Johnson at the centre calling the creative shots\, and it was an approach that paid dividends on Soul Mining. Operating at a place where post-punk meets synthpop and landing somewhere neatly in the middle\, Johnson’s sometimes despondent words (‘Another year over and what have I done? / My aspirations have shrivelled in the sun’) are brought to vivid life here\, with walloping drums\, sparkling guitar figures and even a piano solo from a certain Jools Holland at one point. You won’t find many albums that could accommodate the wistful\, big-hearted warmth of a song like ‘This Is the Day’ AND the full-throttle\, beat-driven closing track ‘Giant’ – but this one did\, and went on to become an 80s cult classic that demands to be heard loud. \nThe album playback will be followed by a Q&A session. \nAfter a short break\, we’ll follow the album with our usual ‘Dead Wax’ session. Bring along a vinyl disc of your choice and hear a track from it played through the Arts Centre PA. This can be anything you like\, for any reason – the more ‘out there’ the better.

SUMMARY:Sam Carter *
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £16.50.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \n‘Sam Carter is a brilliant guitarist and songwriter who combines the observational with social comment and personal reflection’ Songlines \n‘A singer who can hold the audience spellbound all by himself’ R2 \n‘Really wonderful’ Jools Holland \nMidlands-born Sam Carter is a BBC Folk Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist renowned for his lyrical storytelling\, which Uncut described as being “as penetrating as Richard Thompson’s best work”. \nFor over 15 years\, he has been stirring audiences from Camden to Canada\, from major festivals to intimate clubs. Carter’s expressive fingerpicking led Jon Boden of Bellowhead to call him “the finest English-style fingerpicking guitarist of his generation\,” while Ivor Novello-winner Nitin Sawhney has praised his “killer voice.” \nWith a discography that spans six solo albums and two releases with the folk-rock band False Lights\, Carter’s music reflects a blend of traditional English folk\, shape-note singing\, and rock. Notable highlights in his career include a spellbinding performance on Later… with Jools Holland\, where he played songs from his shape-note-inspired album The No Testament alongside renowned fiddler Sam Sweeney. \nCarter’s latest album release\, the acclaimed Top 40 Folk Chart album Silver Horizon\, has cemented his reputation as a skilful blender of ancient and modern. Produced by Andy Bell at the remote Red Kite Studios in Wales\, the album’s 11 indie-folk songs create a dreamlike soundscape\, with guitarist Stuart McCallum (The Breath) adding lush\, reverb-soaked textures. Carter says of this work\, “I’m still dealing with themes of love\, loss\, and change… but sketching events in an impressionistic way gives the songs more room to breathe.” \nSam Carter’s live performances are nothing short of captivating\, filled with the raw honesty\, humour\, and skilled musicianship that underscore his standing as one of contemporary folk’s brightest talents. \nSupport: The Washed Up Folk BandThe Washed Up Folk band hail from the misty shores of Essex and Suffolk with a unique brand of traditional folk story-telling and modern arrangements. “They intelligently weave together dynamic arrangements with rich vocal harmonies and insightful emotional depth\, creating a compelling listen.” – Folk and Honey.

Having completed numerous sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and picking up the Chortle Awards for Best Compere\, one for Best Radio\, and a Three Weeks Editors Choice Award\, in 2017 he scooped the big one\, winning the Edinburgh Comedy Award for his show “The Darkness of Robins”.
