Jigs\, reels\, grooves from Eastern Europe & West Africa\, catchy melodies with closely interwoven harmonies allied to a real sense of swing and dance energy.  \nWhistle player Jonathan Taylor has worked in many different musical genres: best known as a jazz  pianist who's played with artists such as Pee Wee Ellis\, Fred Wesley\, Ruby Turner and various British jazz luminaries\, he's also co-founder of Tango Siempre\, appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and arranged music for Robert Wyatt. \nSinger Ben Cox studied Jazz at Guildhall School of Music & Drama\, has played at major Jazz festivals with The Ben Cox Band\, is currently musical director of four choirs in London and is an accomplished whistle/flute/harmonium player. \nFiddler Tom Newell is known for his work with Effra who perform regularly at UK folk festivals as well as The Ceilidh Liberation Front\, Alex Mendham & His Orchestra and pop acts including Muse\, One Direction and Lana Del Rey. He also plays banjo and mandolin (not to mention charango and mouth harp). \nGuitarist Moss Freed plays with jazz/folk group Flekd\, the Spike Orchestra\, has recorded for John Zorn’s Tzadik label and has recently completed a PhD at Hull University… \nFour musicians from different backgrounds\, united by a love of acoustic folk music\, great tunes and earthy dance grooves. \nThe name Counter's Creek refers to one of London's old rivers that used to flow from Kensal Green into the Thames. It has gradually disappeared over the last two centuries\, first converted into a canal after which parts of it were filled in. DESCRIPTION:Explore expressive landscape painting in this hands-on oil painting workshop inspired by the bold colour\, movement and energetic brushwork of early Expressionism. \nLooking at artists including Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch\, you’ll discover how colour\, shape and brushwork can transform a landscape and communicate mood and emotion. \nWorking from the view at Firstsite\, you’ll create your own landscape painting from observation\, experimenting with simplified forms\, exaggerated colour and expressive brushwork rather than aiming for a realistic copy. \nWhat to expect \nThe session will begin with a short introduction to Expressionism\, followed by a demonstration showing how to simplify the view\, choose a composition and begin building a painting with oil. \nYou’ll then develop your own landscape with individual guidance throughout. \nYou’ll leave with your own expressive landscape oil painting and greater confidence in using oil paint. \nGood to know \nBasic materials provided. Food and drink is also available for purchase throughout the session from our cafés. \nThis workshop is suitable for ages 16+ and is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience of oil painting. \nWhat is Expressionism? \nExpressionism is an approach to art that uses colour\, shape\, line and brushwork to communicate emotion and personal response rather than simply showing a subject realistically. \nArtists may exaggerate colours\, simplify forms and use energetic brushstrokes to create a particular mood or feeling. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll explore these ideas through landscape painting\, taking inspiration from artists such as Van Gogh and Munch while developing your own individual style and response. \nAbout your tutor \nDenisa Mansfield is an artist whose work explores expressive colour\, movement\, and emotion through the language of Impressionism and abstraction. \nShe works primarily in oils\, with a focus on how traditional methods can be reinterpreted in contemporary ways. \nHer practice celebrates curiosity\, creative risk-taking\, and the joy of discovery through paint.
