SUMMARY:John Bramwell (I Am Kloot) *
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £22.50.Doors open 7pm\, starts 7.30pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \nAs the singer in I Am Kloot from 1999 to 2014\, John Bramwell achieved a Mercury Prize nomination for 2010’s The Sky At Night\, a Top 10 chart position for 2013’s Let It All In\, numerous UK and European tours and a triumphant farewell at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with an orchestra in 2014. Now\, as a solo artist\, he’s travelling a very different path\, his stunning new album The Light Fantastic is almost a complete U-turn from his Kloot-days. Darker clouds have been banished\, there are strings and four-part harmonies (a warming development\, since Kloot never had any backing vocals) and a dozen gloriously exhilarating\, beautifully crafted and observed songs about life\, humanity\, the universe and everything. As John puts it\, “It’s been great to find the joy of making music once again. These are the most uplifting songs of my career.” \n‘A unique both literally and metaphorically’ – Lauren Laverne \n‘My favourite songwriter of all time’ – Cate Blanchett [who chose Bramwell-penned ‘Proof’ as her Desert Island Disk on the BBC Radio 4 show]\n‘The UK’s finest export’ New York Times \n‘Bramwell’s new songs are spellbinding’ The Guardian

SUMMARY:Flook
DESCRIPTION:FolkTickets £18.50 / £17.50 concessions.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \nFLOOK : CELEBRATING 30 YEARS IN 2025! \n What began in 1995 as a ground-breaking union of musicians and instruments\, has continued as a unique musical offering through one live album\, four studio albums and countless outstanding performances. A new recording is due for release in early 2025. After 30 years Flook show no sign of letting-up in their brilliance\, their dynamism\, or their inventive flair. \nThe band early on evolved an inimitable trademark sound and hold fast to their rightful reputation as exceptional musical innovators; the whistles and flutes of Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen\, the guitar of Ed Boyd and the bodhran of John Joe Kelly weaving and spinning tunes rooted in tradition over precise acoustic grooves\, with a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance\, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold\, adventurous musical imagination. \nThere is an ever present abundance of individual virtuosity amongst Flook’s four members\, but there is also something wholly unique when this iconic Anglo-Irish band step on stage together\, their playing always an intuitive\, almost symbiotic\, exchange between the various flutes\, whistles\, frets and skins. An evening and a celebration you don’t want to miss out on. \n‘An absolute powerhouse\, a flute and whistle-led\, eight-legged jig machine. Jigs\, reels and waltzes whirl by. Each as glorious as the last\, the musicianship as extraordinary\, the mood never any less than euphoric’ FATEA Live Review\, November 2023 \n‘Nothing short of transcendent… No other band sound like Flook and the new material has pushed them to new\, exhilarating heights’ Songlines\, July 2019 \n‘Never have I seen so many people so completely and utterly spellbound…the most magical of experiences’ The Irish Post

SUMMARY:In Conversation with James Birch: Gilbert & George and the Communists
DESCRIPTION:EA Festival kicks off a new event series in partnership with Essex Book Festival and The Minories. \nTo inaugurate the series of art-themed talks\, James Birch\, the curator\, gallerist and art impresario with many ties to East Anglia\, will introduce his newest book\, Gilbert & George and the Communists. The book memorialises James’ experience of mounting major art exhibitions in Moscow and China for the irreverent and iconic art duo\, Gilbert & George\, after the great success of bringing Francis Bacon to Russia in 1988. (The latter experience was documented by James in his book\, Bacon in Moscow\, published in 2022.) The reader is propelled forward by Birch’s sensitive retelling of his relationship with Gilbert and George\, and his quest to understand the moorings of their art\, while negotiating the black box decision making processes of his Communist patrons\, all during one of the most tumultuous eras of political upheaval in those two countries (perestroika and Tiananmen). It’s a multi-faceted romp through the art world and politics of the late 80s and early 90s that James will bring to life when he joins us on stage at The Minories. \nAbout James Birch \nJames is a curator who has promoted modern art exhibitions around the world for over 30 years. He opened his first gallery in 1983\, followed by two more in London over the next two decades. James has exhibited artists including Grayson Perry\, Francis Bacon\, Gilbert & George\, Genesis P Orridge\, Austin Osman Spare and Denis Wirth-Miller.
