SUMMARY:Benji Kirkpatrick
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £16/£15 concs\nDoors 7.30pm\, show 8pm\nThis gig is for a seated audience.\n\nBenji Kirkpatrick is a singer\, songwriter and musician. A “fretboard wizard” (Time Out) of multiple stringed instruments – bouzouki\, guitar\, banjo\, mandolin – he has been performing solo for over 25 years. As a key founder member of folk big band\, Bellowhead\, Benji has enjoyed playing in front of large festival audiences as well appearances on the likes of Later… with Jools Holland. His latest solo album In Phase\, released in autumn 2023\, features all original songs written between 2020 and 2022. Lauded releases such as ‘Boomerang’ (2008) and ‘Hendrix Songs’ (2015) – an album of acoustic re-interpretations of the work of Jimi Hendrix – have punctuated his exploits over the years alongside extensive work with others. 2019 saw the release of ‘Gold Has Worn Away’ on German based label Westpark Music\, the only release from Benji’s then band ‘Benji Kirkpatrick & The Excess’; a roots-based power trio comprising of Pete Thomas (Jackie Oates\, Megan Henwood) on bass and Joelle Barker (Edwin Starr band\, Del Camino) on drums. Pete Flood\, also of Bellowhead\, occupied the drum seat until 2022. \nBenji was head hunted by folk rock pioneers\, Steeleye Span in 2017 (40 years after his dad\, John\, was in the band) and was a member until 2021\, featuring on 50th anniversary album ‘Est’d. 1969’. He was one third of ‘bloke folk’ trio\, ‘Faustus’\, along with Paul Sartin and Saul Rose\, whose hard-hitting brand of English folk hammered it’s mark onto the scene until the untimely and tragic death of Paul in 2022.\nBenji is a long-term collaborator with Seth Lakeman\, featuring on the successful releases ‘Kitty Jay’\, ‘Freedom Fields’\, ‘Make Your Mark’ and latest release ‘The Granite Way’ and tours with Seth regularly. \nBenji has also worked with Oysterband\, was a part of the 2017 revival production of Peter Bellamy’s ‘folk opera’\, The Transports\, alogside The Young ‘Uns\, Nancy Kerr\, Greg Russell and Matthew Crampton\, and featured in The Lady: An homage… to Sandy Denny\, a 2012 nationwide tour also featuring Maddy Prior\, Thea Gilmore\, Dave Swarbrick\, Joan as Policewoman\, Lavinia Blackwall and PP Arnold. \nHe has also done other things… and is as happy in small grassroots venues as in front of a thousands strong crowd.

SUMMARY:Live Captioned Talk + Tour
DESCRIPTION:3 – 4.15pm approximately \nNew for 2027\, our team have created a Live Captioned Talk + Tour of Colchester Castle\, aimed at Deaf\, deafened and hard of hearing audiences. \nAccompanied by live captions and images\, our guide will first talk through the Castle’s 2\,000-year history! After a Q&A\, you will then be taken down into the Roman Vaults\, the foundations of the Temple of Claudius\, and up the Great Stairs. As our Wi-Fi does not extend underground\, we have signs and a pre-recorded\, captioned video that offer more fascinating insights. The tour ends on the Castle’s first floor galleries\, where you can explore our array of fascinating displays. \nThe Talk + Tour will start promptly at 3pm. We therefore ask visitors to take their seats 5 minutes beforehand. We would also recommend arriving earlier and exploring Colchester Castle before the event starts\, as you may not have enough time afterwards. \nThe Talk + Tour is suitable for ages 8+\, but primarily aimed at adults. \nPlease note the tour includes climbing uneven stairs with no lift access\, crouching to pass through low archways\, and some uneven flooring underfoot. For anyone who would find this inaccessible\, a captioned\, virtual guided tour is available. It costs £1.50 to hire\, and you can request it at reception. We will provide a tablet with the tour preloaded\, along with headphones for your convenience. \nFor useful information\, such as how to find us and what facilities Colchester Castle has\, we recommend reading our Access information. \nLive-captions for this event are provided by our friends at Stagetext. If you’ve not experienced live-captions before\, you can find out more on their website. \nTickets cost £4.95 per adult and £2.85 per child after admission to the Castle. \nCareers are free to attend and do not have to get a ticket in advance.

SUMMARY:Power to the People - An evening with Tom Heap
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £19.50/£10 students\n\nDoors 7.30pm\, talk 8pm\n\n\nThis talk is for a seated audience\n\nTom Heap\, author\, BBC Countryfile\, BBC Radio 4’s Rare Earth\, and Sky News’ Climate Show presenter\, will bust media peddled myths about the cost of green energy\, the unpopularity of climate action\, the role of China and the unshakeable dominance of fossil fuels. But he will also aim a couple of swipes at dogmatic environmentalists. \n\nTom lays out a reset to the climate message: it can now be selfish\, not selfless. It doesn’t even need to be about climate\, just cost. \n\n“Houses have solar panels; villages own wind turbines and countries harness the elements that bless their land. ‘Going Green’ is portrayed as pricey medicine administered from above – something done to you. But it can and should be done with you. And now that works.” Tom Heap \n\nExpect storytelling\, insight\, humour and genuine optimism – exploring how people across the UK are fixing what’s broken and building a greener future. A perfect evening for fans of talks\, ideas and meaningful conversation.

SUMMARY:Anna Pool Sings Dory Previn
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £15/£14 concs\nDoors 7.30pm\, show 8pmThis gig is for a seated audience\n\nComposer and vocalist Anna Pool celebrates the life and legacy of one of the 20th century’s most distinctive\, and too often overlooked\, songwriters – Dory Previn. \nJoined by double bassist Nina Harries and percussionist Calie Hough\, Anna traces Dory’s extraordinary journey: from her early success as a lyricist writing for legends such as Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra\, to her evolution as a fearless folk solo artist whose deeply personal albums captivated hearts and led her to Carnegie Hall. \nRaw\, comic and yet poetic\, Dory’s songs explore everything from Hollywood dreams to devastating psychosis to the almost joyful power of road rage! With bold harmonies\, sweeping guitar melodies and biting wit\, Anna reimagines this remarkable catalogue\, illuminating both the courage and vulnerability that defined Dory’s work. \nA rare opportunity to experience these songs anew\, this powerful performance brings Dory Previn’s legacy out of the shadows and into the light – vibrant\, defiant\, and unmistakably her own. \nAnna Pool is a composer and performer working across folk and theatre. Described as “a thing of wonder\,” by FATEA\, she is ¼ of genre-bending folk quartet\, Wise Woman and played with acclaimed ensemble Mediaeval Baebes between 2017-21. \n \n\nNina Harries is a double bassist and songwriter whose work has toured the world alongside the likes of Anoushka Shankar\, Akram Khan and Katie Melua. \nCalie Hough is both a percussionist and storyteller\, regularly playing across the UK theatre scene including Shakespeare’s Globe\, RSC and The National Theatre.
