DESCRIPTION:Essex artist Simon Carter transforms Firstsite’s gallery with From the Landscape\, an immersive exhibition inspired by the Essex coast and countryside.\n\nCarter has spent more than 40 years walking\, drawing and painting the landscape around him. The exhibition brings together more than 30 acrylic paintings and drawings made since 2020\, an early watercolour painted when he was 23\, and three new series created especially for Firstsite.\n\nRather than simply hanging works on gallery walls\, From the Landscape uses painted surfaces\, installation and sound to create an environment visitors can move through. A 19-metre wall carries 500 monochrome painted sketches\, while recordings made by Carter during his daily walks bring sounds from the Essex coast into the gallery.\n\nCarter is based in Frinton and is President of Colchester Art Society. He has previously been Artist-in-Residence at both the University of Essex and Firstsite.\n\nFrom the Landscape runs from Saturday 19 September 2026 until Sunday 17 January 2027.\n\nAdmission is free and no booking is required.\n\nFirstsite is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 5pm\, Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm\, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.

DESCRIPTION:Krafty Kids is a monthly creative workshop designed for young people aged 7-12+ who are curious about art and enjoy making their own work. \nEach session introduces a different theme and combines learning about artists and artistic techniques with practical activities where participants create their own artwork to take home. \nThe sessions follow a clear and supportive structure. Children begin with an introduction to the theme\, exploring examples of artworks and discussing the materials and techniques used by artists. DESCRIPTION:The day’s drawing will focus on Harry Becker’s great facility for drawing from life. Alongside artist Jevan Watkins Jones\, study a selection of Becker’s drawings\, experiment with his techniques and assimilate them with your own through creative drawing tasks in the Front Room and from life in the garden. \nBasic drawing materials will be supplied. You’re welcome to bring your preferred materials also. \nThis drawing workshop celebrates the acquisition of a new Becker drawing\, Horses and Binder Teams for the VBLF collection held at The Minories. Funds raised from this workshop will be put towards future acquisitions.  \nHis drawings\, etchings\, lithographs and paintings capture\, with passion and sensitivity\, labourers in the field and horses at work in the landscape he most cared for. \nHarry Becker lived at The Minories with his parents and siblings between 1865 and 1903.It’s from here that he started out on his artistic journey studying at the Royal Academy in Antwerp aged fourteen 1879 – 81.

You can either follow the step by step instructions or ‘express yourself’ by putting your own personal touches on it as much as you feel comfortable to do so. If you so wish\, you can change the colours (maybe to fit in with home décor or a favourite colour)\, change the silhouettes (if applicable) or add extra details. We just love it when people get creative but we are equally as happy when people stick to the set piece. It’s totally your choice.
