SUMMARY:Mercury Reads: Kynochtown
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Mercury Reads a series of lively rehearsed readings celebrating local voices and fresh new writing. Each event spotlights an exciting playwright from our region\, giving audiences the chance to see new stories take shape for the very first time. \nIn this session\, join us in the Café Bar on Thu 20 Nov at 4pm as we look at Kynochtown by Vickie Donoghue. On the banks of the river Thames\, hidden within the Essex marshes\, is a thriving explosives factory. Within it are the women of Kynochtown. With the men away fighting on the battlefield\, it is the women who must step up into the dangerous roles that have been left vacant. \nThis play is about the female impact on this dangerous industry and how the history that those women made\, once victory was had in WW1\, disappeared into the marshes as fast as it had appeared. And with the smoke\, the canteen banter and the constant threat of explosions\, it was also the women’s troubles\, their sacrifices\, their love and their loss that were all lost to the mud. \nInspired by the true story of the brave women from Kynoch Explosives Factory in Essex\, Kynochtown sets out to readdress the fact that women are seldom remembered in history. Their part in significant historical events is frequently minimised. This play will shine a light on a group of women who changed everything and nothing. Their struggle is still our struggle. This play is about friendship. Motherhood. And survival.

SUMMARY:Ali Matthews & Co: Mushroom Language - A Fungal Gothic
DESCRIPTION:Pay what you can affordDoors open 7:30 pm\, Show starts 8 pmThis show is for a seated audience \nMushroom Language: A Fungal Gothic \nThey eat nappiesThey eat toothbrushesThey eat bombsThey eat newspapers about how the world will end…a species running slowly in parallel preaching change silently digesting muck into matter and back again. \nMushroom Language: A Fungal Gothic is about the cycles that shape us – eruption\, reproduction and decay. It’s about role-playing the lichen love stories\, spore shoot-outs and truffle siren songs found in our forests. \nIn an eerie and funny homage to folk horror\, two human performers absorb and mimic ‘mushroom language’ through ritual and power dynamics. Who are these creatures\, and what are the mushrooms trying to tell them? Dreamlike conversations and movement sequences are underpinned by original music from composer Hannah Miller (of the Moulettes) and playful design by Rūta Irbīte. \nMushrooms offer us a lens into a more sustainable future\, but nature is hilarious and terrifying. \nClick here for visual access guide

A sophisticated older woman with a scandalous past\, a battle of wills ensues in this sharp expose of social hypocrisy. \nWritten with Noel Coward’s signature wit and flair\, Easy Virtue was filmed in 2008 with Colin Firth and remains strikingly relevant today. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see one of Coward’s earliest and most successful plays in its centennial year. \nThis is an amateur production presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2799806226878246/?event_time_id=2799806233544912

SUMMARY:The Primitives
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £21.50.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a standing audience. \nThe Primitives emerged from the UK independent music scene of the mid-1980s with a sound that distilled the shimmering guitar chime of The Byrds\, the buzzsaw style of The Ramones and 60’s girl group melodies into two-and-a-half-minute pop gems. \nAfter topping the indie singles chart several times\, their widely acclaimed first album\, Lovely\, made them one of the UK’s most revered alternative rock acts\, while the international success of the single “Crash” saw them cross over to a mass audience. Further chart success followed\, along with two more studio albums\, Pure and Galore\, plus extensive tours of Europe and the US\, before the band called it a day in 1992. \nIn 2008\, Mojo Magazine named The Primitives’ second single “Really Stupid” one of the top 40 greatest UK indie singles of all time. \nThe band were reunited in 2009 by the untimely passing of their original bass player Steve Dullaghan\, reforming to play a show in his memory later that year in their hometown Coventry; their first time on stage together for 17 years. Bolstered by the success of this and of a secret show in London\, they went on to tour the UK in April 2010\, followed by shows in the US and Europe. \nIn 2011 The Primitives released the Never Kill A Secret EP through Fortuna Pop! The record featured two brand new songs and two covers of female fronted pop obscurities\, the latter two being a taster for the covers album Echoes and Rhymes\, released on Elefant records in 2012. \nAn album of new original Primitives songs entitled Spin-O-Rama was released in 2014 and was showered with lavish praise; the general opinion being that it sounded like an alternative follow-up to their classic 1988 debut album Lovely. \nIn 2025 Elefant Records put out the double vinyl collection Let’s Go Round Again – Second Wave Singles & Rarities 2011 – 2025\, featuring new material along with all of the A sides\, B sides and other miscellaneous tracks that the band have released over the past 14 years. \nSince reforming The Primitives have toured the UK multiple times\, performed all around Europe and paid several visits to the US and Japan. \nThe current line-up of the band includes original members Tracy Tracy (vocals)\, Paul Court (guitar/vocals) and Tig Williams (drums). \nhttps://linktr.ee/theprimitives

SUMMARY:Nicolas Meier World Group: "Jazz at the intersection of gypsy\, flamenco\, and the Middle East."
DESCRIPTION:“It’s jazz at the intersection of gypsy\, flamenco\, rock and the Middle East\, and it works really well.” – Jazz Views \n“Meier’s scintillating playing on assorted fretted and fretless guitars is sometimes reminiscent of Metheny or McLaughlin\, but with a highly melodic\, pan-Mediterranean eclecticism of his own . . . ” – The Scotsman \n“. . . the passion he has for his unique meld of Turkish\, Balkan and jazz modes make his gigs a vibrant experience.” – Jazzwise \nDrawing from a love of Turkish\, Eastern\, and Middle Eastern music\, flamenco\, tango\, and more — all mixed with jazz — Nicolas’ versatility and musical fluency extend far beyond these influences. His considerable talents drew the attention of rock guitar legend Jeff Beck\, who made him a mainstay in his group and took him on two world tours. \nHaving made a lasting impression on the legendary Bill Bruford\, the aforementioned Jeff Beck\, and Steve Vai\, Nicolas is unquestionably one of today’s most well-rounded\, ambitious and masterful talents on guitar. \nNicolas Meier (Guitars) Alex Hutton (Keyboard) Tom Mason (Bass) Demi García Sabat (Percussion)
