SUMMARY:Monoprint Day: Texture\, Gesture & Etching Press
DESCRIPTION:Discover the expressive world of monoprinting in this hands-on creative session exploring texture\, movement and abstraction through drawing and printmaking techniques. \nGuided by music-led exercises and intuitive mark-making\, you’ll experiment with textured surfaces\, abstract composition\, and monoprint processes using an etching press before creating a large-scale A2 artwork. \nLeave with expressive prints\, layered artwork\, and new techniques to continue exploring at home. \nSuitable for beginners and creatively curious participants aged 14+. \nFood and drink is also available for purchase throughout the session from our cafes. \nWhat is Monoprinting? \nMonoprinting is a form of printmaking that produces unique\, one-off prints rather than repeat editions. \nOften combining drawing\, texture and layered ink techniques\, monoprinting is known for its spontaneous and expressive qualities\, making it ideal for abstract and experimental artwork. \nAbout your tutor \nMel Perkins graduated with a Fine Arts degree from Derby University in 2019. Based in Suffolk as an artist at Old Jet\, Mel is developing her multidisciplinary practice\, focusing mainly on photography\, painting and sculpture. \nDescribing making art as a ‘bodily and intrinsic process’\, Mel works instinctively. Materiality is as fundamental to her practice as theme and subject matter\, and she explores each in depth. \nWhen work becomes too ‘ordered’\, she intentionally seeks chaos again. This playful experimental approach runs throughout Mel’s work\, as she combines hard and soft\, and different scales and modes of presentation. \nThere is a questioning of two and three dimensions and the potential between them. \nSometimes she also adds handwritten notes and musings\, in order to bring an aspect of humanity back into her works.

SUMMARY:Sweet Impressions: Paint a Colourful Still Life Inspired by Impressionism
DESCRIPTION:Turn a colourful arrangement of sweets into an expressive oil painting in this hands-on workshop inspired by the ideas and techniques of Impressionism. \nWorking from a specially arranged still life of colourful sweets\, you’ll paint directly from observation while exploring how light\, colour and brushwork can bring everyday objects to life. \nLook closely at bright wrappers\, shiny surfaces\, reflections and highlights\, then experiment with visible brushstrokes and touches of colour to create a lively painting without focusing on fine detail or photographic realism. \nWhat to expect \nThe session will begin with a short introduction to Impressionism\, followed by a demonstration showing how to choose a composition\, simplify the arrangement and begin building the painting through shapes and areas of colour. \nYou’ll then create your own sweet still life in oils\, with individual guidance throughout. \nYou’ll leave with your own colourful Impressionist-inspired oil painting and a deeper understanding of how colour\, light and expressive brushwork can transform an everyday subject. \nGood to know \nBasic materials provided. Food and drink is also available for purchase throughout the session from our cafés. \nThis workshop is suitable for ages 16+ and is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience of oil painting. \nWhat is Impressionism? \nImpressionism is an approach to painting that focuses on capturing light\, colour and atmosphere rather than creating a perfectly detailed or realistic image. \nImpressionist artists often used visible brushstrokes and placed touches of colour next to each other rather than blending everything smoothly. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll explore these ideas through a still life of sweets\, looking at how reflections\, highlights and changing colours can be captured with expressive marks. \nAbout your tutor \nDenisa Mansfield is an artist whose work explores expressive colour\, movement\, and emotion through the language of Impressionism and abstraction. \nShe works primarily in oils\, with a focus on how traditional methods can be reinterpreted in contemporary ways. Her practice celebrates curiosity\, creative risk-taking\, and the joy of discovery through paint.

Last Saturday of the month at 2 pm. \nTo avoid postage charge: Add to Basket\, View Basket\, Go to Checkout\, Choose FREE Delivery Option \nThe Feminist Book Club is a space for curious minds\, lively conversations\, and collective empowerment. We read one book each month and meet on the last Saturday of every month for an engaging session of discussion\, debate\, critical thinking\, self-empowerment\, and a little bit of patriarchy-smashing! Along the way\, we build meaningful connections and community with like-minded people who care about creating a more just and inclusive world. \nLed by Solange Gulizzi\, an art and architectural historian and researcher exploring power\, gender\, and everyday lived experiences\, the club brings together academic ideas and real-life conversations in an accessible\, welcoming way. No prior knowledge is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to engage. \nThis is an inclusive\, welcoming\, and respectful space.  Whilst the group establishes itself it has decided to have women (and trans women) only.  This is due to some of the subject matters that have arisen.  This policy will be reconsidered but until then\, we hope you will respect this decision. We ask all members of our community to approach conversations with curiosity\, kindness\, and respect for others. We may challenge ideas\, but we always treat people with dignity. \nAs a safe and supportive space\, we want to hear your voice. Your opinions\, experiences\, questions\, and reflections are not only welcomed but encouraged. SUMMARY:Professor David Olusoga: A Global History Of The British Cup Of Tea
DESCRIPTION:There is nothing more British than a cup of tea. \nTea is our national drink; our national obsession. Yet the history of tea is the ultimate global story. It links over 350 years of British history to the histories of China\, India\, the Americas and beyond. It encompasses the Boston Tea Party\, the Opium Wars\, the history of the British East India Company\, and more – it is a story that involves industrial espionage\, a vast forgotten migration within India\, and the creation in Britain of a whole new world of domestic traditions. \nIn this brand-new talk\, David Olusoga uses art\, photography and humour to uncover the strange\, unexpected\, and intriguing history of our national drink. \nBAFTA-winning David has risen to renown in recent years\, becoming prolific and highly respected in multiple spaces. He has twice interviewed US President Barack Obama\, reached the finals of the BBC hit TV series Celebrity Traitors\, and has enjoyed success on BBC2 with his 3-part series Empire. A fresh instalment of his much-anticipated series House Through Time is now running on BBC2. \nHe is of course also the author/co-author of eight books\, including Black & British: A Forgotten History\, awarded both the Longman-History Today Trustees Award and the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize. \nA Q&A session will follow this talk\, as will a book signing – offering you a chance to meet one of the UK’s foremost public historians. \nDon’t miss your opportunity to see David present this fascinating topic as only such an accomplished researcher and master storyteller can.

SUMMARY:First Thursdays: Relaxed Opening
DESCRIPTION:As part of the First Thursdays Festival\, join us at Colchester Castle for a special session designed for visitors with autism or other sensory sensitivities. We turn off sounds and visual displays to reduce sensory stimulation\, so you can enjoy the museum in a more calm and relaxed atmosphere. \nIn the Chapel\, we have a quiet area with sensory toys and items\, clearly marked as a peaceful space. Visitors can use this area however they feel comfortable\, and it’s a supportive\, judgment-free environment. \nYou can also get free ear defenders\, visual guides\, and twiddlemuffs at the museum’s reception. \nSuitable for ages 4+. \nFor helpful information\, such as how to find us and what facilities Colchester Castle has\, we recommend reading our Access information: Access at the Castle \nFor more information about the First Thursdays Festival\, visit the Creative Colchester Website. \nThis event is included as part of Castle admission. Admission tickets can be purchased online or on the day. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2763344177379346/?event_time_id=2763344187379345
