SUMMARY:Brewhouse Cinema Club Free Movie - Movie Name In Description
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday April 13th\, at 3:30pm at Queen St Brewhouse\, I’ll be screening Sid & Nancy (1986)\, written and directed by Alex Cox (Repo Man) and co-written with Abbe Wool. The films stars Gary Oldman\, Chloe Webb\, Andrew Schofield\, David Hayman\, Xander Berkeley\, and Courtney Love. Sid & Nancy is a British biographical film about Sid Vicious\, bassist of the 70s punk rock band the Sex Pistols\, and his drug fueled relationship with Nancy Spungen. The film bombed at the box office in 1986 but was well received by critics and is now considered a cult classic. \nIn London\, England 1977\, the British punk rock band the Sex Pistols are at the height of their fame with their new bass player Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman) known for his provocative style and behavior. During a tour\, Sid meets Nancy Spungen (Chloe Webb)\, a heroin-addicted American groupie who came to London to meet the band. Sid rejects her advances at first but gradually starts a bond with her over heroin use. Over time\, they both become inseparable\, which starts to affect Sid’s relationship with the band and his health. When the band split on their American tour\, Sid stays with Nancy\, where their relationship becomes dangerously destructive. \nAccording to various sources\, e.g.\, interviews and autobiographies\, Sid Vicious’s mother\, Anne Beverley\, tried to prevent the film for being made until director Alex Cox paid her a visit and talked her through the script. After which\, she helped with the production by providing Vicious’s own metal chain and padlock for Gary Oldman to wear. Johnny “Rotten” Lydon\, lead singer of the Sex Pistols\, was less enthusiastic and tried to boycott the film from being released. Apparently\, the only time Lydon was contacted was when Andrew Schofield (the actor who portrayed him) was requested to go meet him. However\, Alex Cox claims they met for a drinks to discuss the script and that Lydon simply doesn’t remember. \nAfter the movie\, there will be a punk gig organised by Richard Benedetti called ”I Don’t Like Sundays” presents X-KAMINSKI plus THE BROKEN JOHNNY’S at the Brewhouse 😀

SUMMARY:Gigspanner Big Band Album Launch Tour - Colchester
DESCRIPTION:‘A career defining release from one of folk’s most powerfully creative groups’ (KLOF magazine) \nThe Gigspanner Big Band are a unique force in British folk music… \nHaving spent much of the past two years touring alongside best-selling author Raynor Winn (The Salt Path) with their prose and music collaboration SALTLINES\, the Gigspanner Big Band return to their six-piece format\, showcasing material from their new album\, Turnstone. \nTheir high-energy\, virtuosic performances appeal equally to traditionalists and to those looking for something more experimental\, and they have garnered praise from publications as varied as fRoots\, The Telegraph and The Wire\, where they were described as ‘melodically folk-rooted yet open and innovative beyond the constraints of genre’. \nBeginning life as a trio – with legendary Steeleye Span fiddle player Peter Knight being joined by percussionist Sacha Trochet and guitarist Roger Flack – the line-up has been expanded to form the Gigspanner Big Band\, with acclaimed multi-instrumental duo Edgelarks (Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin – BBC Folk Awards ‘Best Duo’) and Bellowhead co-founder and melodeon player extraordinaire\, John Spiers\, joining the fray. \nWhile Peter Knight\, as part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s line-up\, helped invent a brand of folk rock that is still influential today\, John Spiers\, has had an equally profound impact on the landscape of traditional music over the last two decades.Characterised by riotous inventiveness\, technically gifted individual playing and subtle collaborative interaction\, this coming together of several of the biggest names on the folk-roots scene\, combines a deep knowledge of roots traditions with a ceaselessly boundary pushing approach. \nUnsurprisingly\, the superlatives have come thick and fast… \n“The flights of musical fancy are staggering in their natural invention” Fatea Magazine \n“Some of the most important and exhilarating art ever to sit under the banner of folk music” KLOF \n“Musical brilliance is abundant” Mojo Magazine \n“Music of intelligently crafted brilliance” Songlines

SUMMARY:Wonderful Wednesdays - Vici Wreford-Sinnott: Unruly
DESCRIPTION:Pay what you can affordDoors open 7:30 pm\, Show starts 8 pmThis show is for a seated audience \nMarina and Suze\, a force of post-punk\, police-agitating\, bollocks-shouting duo were changing the world through the disability rights movement. Best friends from childhood\, the pair had a loyal\, fiery relationship\, but now Marina has lost Suze forever\, and the revolution has to stop for a while. Marina reflects on their riotous journey\, embodying their world\, as she summons a lineage of powerful disabled heroines. \nIn order to say goodbye to Suze properly\, Marina questions whether it has all been worth it. Acknowledging the personal cost of campaigning\, and feeling like she has to query her own role\, she carefully unpacks her life and slowly removes the layers of women she was expected to be by others. \nUnruly is written and performed by Vici Wreford-Sinnott alongside award-winning composer and musician Beccy Owen. Bex Bowsher directs this rare piece of disabled women-led theatre with an impassioned call to action. We invite you to celebrate these hidden radicals while considering whether doing nothing to oppose brutal injustice is ever really an option. \nUnruly is a powerful\, urgent show about refusing to be invisible in hostile environments and the power of friendship and community to get us through. \nAccess information: \nThis show has integral captioning and audio description is written into the script. There is integrated BSL Interpretation\, please ask Box Office about the best seating for each. \nAccess Culture of the show \nThere will be a warm welcome into the theatre. We create work to be as accessible as possible and we want audiences to feel comfortable in the space. \nIt’s fine to come and go in the theatre if you need the loo or to take a break. \nPeople who make involuntary noises based on their conditions are welcome\, and as such we expect all audience members to be respectful of all other audience members. It is a ‘tutting’ and frowning free-zone. \nThere is no audience participation during the show\, so no one will be put on the spot for anything. \nAccess dogs are welcome. Do let us know in advance where possible. \nMusic and Sound \nAll music is performed live by one musician/sound artist/singer. Some of the music is in a punk style and so many have attitude and a degree of reasonable volume. No loud bangs and no distorted sound are expected. \nThere are a couple of moments where the actor raises their voice in the context of the play \nContent awareness \nThe play explores themes of friendship and loss\, reflection on life events\, amazing disabled women from history who achieved incredible things against very challenging and discriminatory social backdrops. There are references to death – there is no detail described. Drinking alcohol

SUMMARY:Solstice + Ebony Buckle
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £19.50.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm.This gig is for a seated audience. \nA story that began at the legendary Marquee Club in London’s Wardour Street finally arrives at the chapter PROG journalist Martin Kielty describes as “Solstice becoming the band they were always meant to be”. \nOn the current album ‘Light Up’ released January 13th 2023: “Nothing prepared me for the extraordinary new line-up that they have settled on in the last few years. Solstice are back and are back to being brilliant. Their forthcoming album\, Light Up\, is utterly sensational: beautiful production\, great songs\, great voices\, tricky rhythms and epic guitar solos.” Greg Spawton\, Big Big Train \n‘Wow! – that’s a great sounding album! Very Solstice\, and a wonderfully dynamic vibe. Evokes the spirit of the band I first saw in the 80s\, but with very much a ‘here and now’ production sound that brings with it the wisdom of those ensuing years.
