SUMMARY:Two Come Home
DESCRIPTION:It’s winter in a small\, isolated town in the Appalachian mountains. Ex-con and recovered addict Evan lives a simple and solitary existence until some old ghosts return to unbury a decade’s worth of pain. \nDirect from an acclaimed off-west end run at The Cockpit Theatre\, having received 5-star reviews and a whopping seven Fringe Theatre Award nominations\, Two Come Home is an unflinching tale of poverty\, addiction\, and homophobia. A unique combination of true crime\, romance\, and family drama all set to a haunting live soundtrack. \nRun time: 90 minutes plus interval \nTrigger warnings: This production contains haze\, loud noises\, gunshot sound effects\, strong language\, nudity\, depictions of violence and death\, references to physical and sexual assault. \n★★★★★ “Raw\, gritty\, in some moments horrifying\, and at times quite beautiful” – My View From The Stalls \n★★★★★ “A truly unmissable play – this is outstanding\, unforgettable theatre.” – Squirrp \n★★★★★ “A gut-wrenching drama that is a huge credit to its highly talented queer cast & crew.” – The Spy In The Stalls \n★★★★★ “This wonderfully written character-centric drama is\, to get straight to the point – absolutely outstanding.” – Rated Reviewed

SUMMARY:Forces of Nature - a Shakespeare workshop led by Nigel Walford
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare’s words vividly conjured up the sights and sounds of nature for audiences at a time of bare stages and limited special effects. Two aspects of the forces of nature feature significantly: the extremes of weather\, and the perils (or pastoral beauty) of woods and forests. This workshop\, led by Nigel Walford will explore these themes\, and we’ll see how his descriptive text remains as powerful today!£5.00 cash on the door. All welcome but let us know if you are coming so we have an idea of numbers.

SUMMARY:Blow Up - Colchester
DESCRIPTION:Blow Up returns to Colchester at Three Wise Monkeys \nPaul Tunkin (DJ) plus The Forty Fours (live) \nColchester was the first town to hold a Blow Up event outside of the weekly London events in the nineties. After a successful return to Colchester in Jan 2025 we are returning in January 2026. \nBlow Up\, a bona-fide legendary club night at the centre of the mid-Nineties Brit Pop explosion\, cited as the catalyst and birth place of the BritPop scene\, influencing the style and sound of a generation. Blow Up was voted No.4 in Time Out’s Top Ten Clubs of the 90s\, described as one of ‘5 Classic Clubs of Our Time‘ by Vox Magazine (alongside The Blitz Club\, Shoom\, The Roxy) and as ‘The club that changed the world’ by Melody Maker. Describing Blow Up in Time Out’s London Calling book as “the breeding ground of the Brit Pop sound” and in NME’s Original’s Blow Up was listed as a Top Ten Britpop Moment. In July 2022 Time Out once again listed Blow Up as one of the greatest London clubs of the past 40 years. \nBlow Up has also hosted events around the UK and internationally over the years\, including across Europe\, USA\, Russia and Japan. Whilst the Blow Up club compilations (‘Blow Up A-Go-Go!’ and ‘Blow Up presents Exclusive Blend’) have increased the reach of Blow Up around the world.. \nBlow Up was founded and launched by Paul Tunkin 16th October 1993 at the upstairs function room of a Camden Town pub the Laurel Tree. After just a few months Blow Up had become the epicentre of a seismic musical and stylistic change in what was later called the Britpop scene. From its origins at the Laurel Tree\, Camden Town (1993-1996) to Soho venues the Wag Club (1996-2001)\, the Metro Club (2002-2009\, the Metro which Paul Tunkin co-ran with former Wag Club manager Alan Campbell) Blow Up maintained a weekly club event interspersed with various one-off events. Post the Metro Club’s closure Blow Up took up weekly and monthly residences in various venues including Bar Rumba\, 4 Denmark St and Peckham’s Bussey Building followed by a weekly five year Friday night residency at the St Moritz Club\, Wardour St Soho (2015-2020) once again interspersed with occasional monthly events including the Troubadour London. Blow Up ran continuous weekly events until the nightlife lockdown in 2020 and finally returned for a three night residency at Vout O Reenee’s London (Oct – December 2022). November 2023 saw the first part of the Blow Up 30 year celebrations with a sold out club and live event at Jamboree Kings Cross. Whilst in May 2024 saw Blow Up take to the roof terrace of members club the Century in Soho as part 2 of our 30th celebrations. \nHope that you can join us for what promises to be another special night.

SUMMARY:An Audience Without Jake Thackray
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £12 / £11 concessions.Doors open 7.30pm\, starts 8pm. \nThis show is for a seated audience. \nJohn Watterson is delighted to bring his show to Colchester Folk Club – ‘An Audience without Jake Thackray’. \nThe show will include many Jake classics (Sister Josephine\, On Again On Again\, The Bantam Cock etc)\, anecdotes from John’s research into Jake’s life for the forthcoming biography as well as some newly discovered Jake Thackray masterpieces from John’s most recent CD\, The Lost Will and Testament of Jake Thackray. Most of the album’s fifteen songs have never been released in any format before. Many have lain\, forgotten\, in the BBC archives for decades; some have not been heard for half a century. \nLeeds-born Jake Thackray (1938-2002) is increasingly recognised as being one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century\, a unique talent\, whose songs are full of poetry\, wit\, irreverence and humanity. He became known to millions through his regular appearances in the 1960s and 1970s on programmes such as Braden’s Week and That’s Life. During his career he performed over 1000 times on television and radio\, performed for the royal family and toured the world. His distinctive appearance\, deadpan delivery\, talent for storytelling\, clever wordplay\, occasional\, artful use of vulgarity and surreal imagination delighted many viewers and outraged some. \nSince his death in obscurity there has been growing recognition of his genius and a resurgence of interest in his work. His admirers include Jarvis Cocker\, Alex Turner\, Don Black\, Thea Gilmore\, Cerys Matthews\, and Benjamin Clementine. \nJohn Watterson is the UK’s leading performer of Jake’s songs. As Fake Thackray he has toured with Fairport Convention and performed at Latitude\, Cropredy and the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. He has also played for Jake’s family. \nJohn has appeared many times on radio\, including Radio 4’s Great Lives\, a recent Radio 2 documentary on Jake presented by Cerys Matthews and Radio 3’s The Verb hosted by Ian McMillan.
