Open Ramble East – Colchester Walk
Join us for an afternoon walk organised by and for LGBTQI+ people in collaboration with Ian Giles, James McDermott and Katie Kennedy.
Meeting Point | Firstsite | 2pm
Walk | 2pm – 4pm [4-miles approx] Cakes and refreshments | Firstsite | 4pm
A walk across Colchester based on LGBTQI+ histories and contemporary sites. Meeting at Firstsite, the home of Colchester Pride.
East Anglian queer writer James McDermott has written five texts which will be performed at locations with queer significance, including a sonnet to the former gay bars of Colchester, a monologue about cruising in Hilly Fields park and a soundscape inspired by Outhouse East, the town’s LGBTQ drop-in centre and former gay switchboard.
The walk will be followed by free refreshments back at Firstsite. Join Colchester artist and designer Katie Kennedy to print a nature inspired interactive tablecloth and Open Ramble East picnic sacks to take home.
The route will likely include uneven pavements and steps which may restrict access for those with reduced mobility. The walk is open to those of all fitness levels.
Organised by Ian Giles for New Geographies as part of the Jane’s Walk Festival. Jane’s Walk is a free walking festival that takes place in towns and cities worldwide over the first weekend in May, honouring the life and legacy of the urbanist Jane Jacobs.
