Local hero, DJ Gilly is leaving Colchester next week to move to the Isle of Wight. The guys at Smiths Bar are hosting a leaving party for him from 5.30pm on Monday 11th November. Come along, we want to make this a farewell that our good friend will remember.
Colchester legend Gilly started out DJing in 1981 with Choc at The Futuristic night in the Boudicca, Woods Leisure Centre and The Windmill.
Since then the man himself has frequented the decks at his popular nights in Colchester venues such Waikiki (the original bar of that name), The Venue, The Hippodrome, Colne Lodge, Trotters Bar, Tartan House, The Works, Cavaliers and Colchester Arts Centre to name just a few.
In 1990 Gilly took the trip to Rhodes, Greece and spent 5 summers DJing at the Jamaica Bar in Faliraki, returning to set up Times Bar on North Hill in 1995 before joining Twisters Bar in 1999.
Over 30 years since starting out, Gilly remains a DJ in demand playing at SHAFT – Qube Bar, Robertos, The Re-Blitz nights, V Bar, The Bull, Old Courthouse, and the Purple Dog on a regular basis. In September 2012 he made a long overdue return to Twisters Bar, joining me on the decks for ‘Of All Time’.
Gilly’s music policy? Expect anything from Punk to Reggae to Funk to Soul and expect nothing short of an amazing time.
He’ll be massively missed in Colchester, I’ll certainly miss him as a friend and a DJ partner, but the Isle of Wight will benefit from his presence on the island.
DJ Gilly – we salute you, sir, and I thang yaw!
