The X Trials: Law + the Supernatural

October 19, 2024

This event will be held on the 19th of October, from 7 PM to 9 PM. The doors will open at 7 PM, and the talk will begin at 7:30 PM and last until 8:30 PM. After the talk, there will be a question-and-answer session, which will end by 9 PM. A limited bar will be available.

Over the last 1000 years, Colchester Castle has been the site of a Roman temple, a Medieval castle, a gaol, and even a Victorian prison. It has housed all manner of villains, from pirates and murderers to witches and heretics. It’s even housed one of the worst criminals—a vicar who unlawfully fished in Coggeshall ponds.

This gruesome and ghoulish legal history makes it the perfect place to learn about creepy legal cases! Throughout history, people have believed in strange and fantastical creatures, from aliens to zombies and everything in between. On occasion, these beliefs have led them to commit bizarre and terrible crimes, and when the offender appears before the judge and jury, their beliefs cannot be ignored. Instead, they must be subjected to the same harsh legal scrutiny as any other case.

So join criminal barrister and ghost-enthusiast Naomi Ryan for a journey into this strange area of law, in which the Fortean meets the forensic, the bizarre is examined by barristers, and the strange is investigated by the state. Learn about a whole array of weird cases, including witches leaking war secrets, ghosts solving their own murders, and Witchfinders terrorising the local area!

This event is suitable for ages 14+.

Tickets are £15 per person. Booking in advance is required for this event. To book simply call the team at Colchester Castle on 01206 282939. Our lines are open from 10am – 4.30pm.
