With Corinne Fowler, Professor of Colonialism and Heritage at the University of Leicester. Corinne specialises in colonial history, decolonisation and the British countryside’s relationship to Empire. She is perhaps best known for her work with the National Trust to record their property’s links with slavery and Britain’s colonial past. She will discuss what a walk in the countryside can reveal about our country’s history.
Corinne has appeared on the BBC Country File’s aptly titled “Plodcast” and was interviewed in the Guardian when her book was published https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/21/corinne-fowler-national-trust–
colonialism-our-island-stories.
Bryn Griffiths, our event host, recently interviewed Corinne Fowler on his podcast which can be found here https://youtu.be/po5S8XiE3tE?si=3Pc6eKuVlnyVUvAw
Expect to see Corinne talking about how her ten walks revealed many fascinating connections between our colonial history and British rural life. In addition to discussion, you can expect to see film clips, poetry and some folk singing. If you are interested in a Colchester history from below you may also want to attend the
Peoples History of Colchester Walk which is taking place at 2.30pm from the War Memorial on Sunday 4 May.
