Legendary DJ Colin Curtis plays Rhythm Loft at Three Wise Monkeys in Colchester on Saturday 4 April, bringing jazz dance, soul, funk and house to the city.
A DJ whose career runs right through the story of modern club music is heading to Colchester this Saturday, 4th April, as DJ Colin Curtis takes over the top floor at Three Wise Monkeys for the second edition of Rhythm Loft.
The night is a joint promotion from Soul Imprint and Two Left Feet, bringing one of the UK’s most respected DJs to the city for a rare appearance.
Curtis first made his name on the northern soul scene in the 1970s before helping steer the sound towards newer releases alongside fellow Blackpool Mecca figure Ian Levine. Over the decades, his sets have travelled through modern soul, jazz-funk, jazz dance and the early electronic sounds that later fed into house and techno.
Along the way, he built a reputation for constantly pushing musical boundaries, with influential residencies including the legendary Berlin club in Manchester, still talked about by dancers and DJs from that particular era.
For the Rhythm Loft appearance, he’ll play an extended two-hour set, drawing on the soulful side of club music – Jazz Dance, Soul, Funk, Boogie, Afro Beat & Soulful House.
Support on the night comes from a line-up of DJs with long connections to the soulful club scene, including Mick Cooper & Chris White (Soul by the Sea), Dave Malone (Feel the Real) and Nicky B (Crafty Fox Jazz, Ipswich).
Dave Malone says bringing Curtis to Colchester has been on the cards for a while. “We have wanted to get Colin along for some time, and now the stars have fully aligned for this particular Saturday on this special Easter Weekend. We have often travelled many miles to see him perform ourselves, such as Dingwalls (London)…etc.”
Expect a wide-ranging musical journey on the night. “We assume Colin’s set will be heavily Jazz dance biased as always, but will swim through the various genres, such as Soul, Funk, Afro Beat and House.”
Colchester audiences have long been open to deeper sounds on the dancefloor. “Having promoted in Colchester for many years and knowing the DJs who played before us. An underground bedrock of tolerance of deeper grooves has always been acceptable. That’s one big thing we have personally discovered with the Colchester clubbing scene. It’s very cosmopolitan musically.”
Chris White says the aim of Rhythm Loft is simple – bringing DJs with long reputations in soulful dance music to Colchester. “We three, who have brought the Rhythm Loft to Three Wise Monkeys and Colchester, want to bring the best performers who over the years have built up a great reputation in the world of dance music over many years, and when we say dance music, we mean Funk, Latin and Jazz Dance, Soul, Soulful House, Jazz Funk and Boogie.”
