A major Banksy exhibition in Colchester will open at The Minories this October, featuring 28 original works by the world-famous street artist.
A major exhibition featuring original works by Banksy will open in Colchester this autumn, as The Minories announces one of the most ambitious shows in its history.
Out of Line: Banksy and the Art of Dissent will run from 10 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, bringing 28 original artworks by Banksy to the historic gallery at 74 High Street. The exhibition will also feature significant works by more than 20 artists from the global street art and urban contemporary art movement, placing Banksy’s work in the wider context of artistic protest and dissent.
Unlike many exhibitions that claim to showcase Banksy’s work, organisers emphasise that every piece in Out of Line will be either an original artwork or an artist-certified print – meaning visitors will see the real thing rather than reproductions.
The majority of works in the exhibition have been lent by John Brandler of Brandler Galleries in Brentwood, one of the UK’s foremost dealers in street art and urban contemporary art.
Why this matters for Colchester
Major Banksy exhibitions are usually hosted by galleries in London, Bristol or other more established cities, so the arrival of Out of Line in Colchester represents a significant cultural moment for the city.
The show is great news for The Minories as it brings internationally recognised work to Colchester’s oldest gallery. It also reflects the continuing revival of the Minories, which has been rebuilding its programme and audience following the pandemic with an emphasis on ambitious exhibitions and community engagement.
For Colchester audiences, it offers a rare opportunity to see original Banksy works outside major metropolitan galleries, alongside artists from the wider global street art movement.
The exhibition is supported by Colchester City Council.
A gallery with deep roots in the city
The Minories occupies an elegant Georgian townhouse at 74 High Street, a building with centuries of local history.
The gallery was established through the legacy of Clarence Victor Batte-Lay, a Colchester-born collector who wanted his art collection to be housed in a historic building “for the benefit and advantage of the inhabitants of Colchester.”
Over the decades, the Minories has hosted hundreds of exhibitions, showing artists ranging from John Constable and Edward Bawden to contemporary East Anglian artists, and has long been an important part of the city’s cultural life.
Following its reopening under a renewed structure after Covid, the gallery has been working with artists, community groups and organisations across North Essex to reimagine the space as a centre for contemporary creativity.
