Frances Leate of the Colchester Daily Gazette ran the exclusive story this morning, but if you’ve not yet heard, the ‘Colchester deserves a FREE outdoor music and arts festival’ Facebook campaign, created by Keep Colchester Cool on 18 December 2009, has been a success.

Colchester! – a week of grassroots celebration and events – will take place throughout the town from Monday 13 to Saturday 18 September 2010.

The finale will be Colchester Free Festival 2010, a one-day music and arts festival running from 11am to 7pm in Castle Park on Saturday 18 September.

Colchester! (Colchester Free Festival 2010) is brought to you by Keep Colchester Cool and Slack Space, and will be organised by the community for the community. Taking on the ethos of the original free festivals, it aims to be the people’s festival.

Keep Colchester Cool and Slack Space are now asking members of the Colchester community to help raise at least £7,000 to fund the event.

Speaking about the fundraising drive, Ben Howard of Keep Colchester Cool said: “We want the festival to be a landmark event in Colchester’s vibrant music and arts calendar, and we know that many others feel the same way.”

Abby Cheverst of Slack Space added: “Although we are asking for money in what are tough times for many, if each of the 1,500 people who are members of the ‘Colchester deserves a FREE outdoor Music & Arts Festival’ Facebook group donated just £5, we would reach our target.”
