I Hear Voices Theatre Company presents… “POETS DAY” Written and Performed by Damien Bell & Darren Gooding Sound Recording by Stuart Armitage

Fresh from their bafflingly meta-textual live appearance at last year’s Christmas Poetry Bash, Don Fletcher Park and Mervin Mule return to the Arts Centre stage! Over four decades after exploding onto the spoken word scene, two once radical and now increasingly frazzled punk poets, Donny and Mervin, struggle against the prospect of slowly disintegrating in genteel oblivion; adrift in the picturesque East Anglian coastal village of Wivenhoe.

“Poets Day” inhabits a strangely familiar landscape; brimming with fading artists, assorted eccentrics and bus-pass bohemians.

I Hear Voices Theatre Company presents two brand new half hour adventures in this popular absurd radio series; which has so far exceeded all expectations and not become the subject of legal proceedings… Recorded before your very ears at the Company’s spiritual home of Colchester Arts Centre.

“Passport to Wivenhoe” by Darren Gooding – Frustrated by a lack of post-Brexit European arts funding our heroes think all their problems are solved when Donny accidentally “discovers” that Wivenhoe is technically a province of France. Will they survive their coastal idyll suddenly going 52% continental and do there know their “aller” from their “avoir”? Expect a Comedy pastiche of Ealing proportions, complete with fine wines and terrible Franglais…

“Doctor Whom?” by Damien Bell – Mervin is finally to receive a long overdue accolade, in the form of an honorary doctorate from his former university. This means a road trip in a borrowed car, with Donny in tow. What mishaps will the hapless duo happen upon on their journey? Can they make it to the ceremony in time, and will they survive it with their dignities intact? Find out, in this comedy of misadventures!

WARNING: ANY SIMILARITY BETWEEN POETS, ESSEX OR PUNK, IS ENTIRELY COINCIDENTAL.

I Hear Voices Theatre Company is a small-scale performance team, founded in 2012 by Damien Bell and Darren Gooding. Its primary focus has been producing live recordings of original audio comedy podcast serials; including the 1950’s spy thriller, ‘The Adventures of Bentley Strangetrousers’, Victorian Steampunk epic,‘Tea With Lady Breakneck’ and Science Fiction spoof “OFU”. During Lockdown the company started remotely producing a new series of absurd Science Fiction epics; “Space Wizards on the Brink” and since 2021 they have been annually plundering the works of M.R. James and Edgar Allan Poe to produce their own (very silly) “Ghost Story for Christmas”.
