Iliad – the musical
Award winning storyteller Clare Goodall brings us her punchy telling of the Iliad, with musical accompaniment from Lizzie Gutteridge (aulos)
“It was the tenth year of the siege of Troy, the year that Calchas, the soothsayer, had predicted that the city would fall.” Paris of Troy chose Aphrodite the Goddess of Love as the fairest of all and gained Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, as his reward. However Helen’s furious husband, determined to get her back, assembled a fleet of a thousand ships, sailed to Troy and laid siege to the city. Now, all the mightiest Princes of Ancient Greece are camped before Troy’s high walls in their black, beached ships. Clare Goodall, award winning storyteller and musician tells this epic tale of love, tragedy and loss in an energetic and punchy adaptation, where the characters come to life even if that life then ends brutally in bloodshed.
Clare says, ‘This is the epic that everyone had heard of but few have read. My aim with the adaptation was to make this classic more accessible to people who have found it daunting. I want to show why it’s been so well known for 3,000 years and how it deals with issues that are still relevant today. It’s also a blast to perform as it’s such a wild ride.’
In this brand new collabroation between Clare and local musician and series organiser Lizzie Gutteridge the story will be interspersed with musical interludes on aulos (double pipes) and lyres.
Refreshments will be served during the interval, with donations to church funds
