WALK 12: Radical Colchester: Let’s Create a People’s History!

May 06, 2024

An alternative look at our city’s history, this time from below. How did our people – & not their kings, queens, lords & generals – forge our city’s story?

Tories prepare to be triggered!

The walk is only a contribution to the writing of a Colchester history from below and I hope there will be many more contributions in the future.

On this walk expect lots of protest, anti-fascism, conscientious objection, stories of plunder, Poll Tax Revolts in the fourteenth and twentieth centuries, rebellious music, the demise of local government, executed royalists, opposition to legalised mass murder and much much more.

With Bryn Griffiths.

Meet: 2pm, at the War Memorial (2.5 miles, 2hrs).

ACCESSIBILITY: A city centre walk that is hard-surfaced all the way and step-free. Some medium-steep gradients eg within Dutch Quarter. Wheelchair users in need of assistance will find plenty of help on hand, but please be in touch to discuss further if necessary.

After the walk you are invited to join me for further discussion in the legendary pub the Odd One Out.
