Colchester-born singer-songwriter Rhiannon Mair kick-starts her UK tour at Tin Pan Alley tomorrow night.
Described as “an energetic performer on stage with a presence that can’t be ignored”, 2013 looks set to be a significant year for Rhiannon with the release of her fan-funded debut album, It Goes Like This, backed through PledgeMusic.
Music has always been part of her life. Her mother, a musician involved in Celtic folk bands, introduced her to songwriting and performance early on. Rhiannon’s first instrument at the age of 10 was her mother’s pots and pans, before progressing to drums, flute, guitar and vocals. Influenced by artists such as KT Tunstall, Feist, Björk and Sia, she began writing her own material at 16. Her strong rhythmic grounding and emotionally direct lyrics combine to create songs that linger long after the performance ends.
Over the past year, Rhiannon has built momentum across London and the surrounding music scene, including being shortlisted for the Mayor of London’s ‘Big Busk’ competition. She has gained praise from fans, radio producers and fellow musicians alike.
Kal Lavelle, iTunes Single of the Week and former tour support for Ed Sheeran, described her as “beautifully edgy… bringing the rock back into folk.”
Jaye Harrison of Roundhouse Radio praised her “incredible voice” and layered vocals, while Kate Jones of Rhythm of London & Gigs called her “a consummate performer with bags of flair and attitude.”
Rhiannon will be touring It Goes Like This alongside Antonio Lulic, with Colchester’s own Ady Johnson joining the line-up for the hometown show.
