Colchester Film Festival is back, taking place at Firstsite 7-12 November 2022.

Colchester Film Festival is hosting a series of guest speaker events and screening an exciting selection of features films giving audiences new insight into the craft of filmmaking and introducing them to new cinema.

There is a blend of established filmmaking talent with Palme d’Or recipient Mike Leigh (Secrets & Lies’, ‘Happy Go Lucky’ & ‘Mr Turner’) and screenwriter Deborah Moggach (Pride of the Prejudice’ 2005), director and producer Anthony Fabian (‘Mrs Harris Goes to Paris’) and the best up and coming filmmakers in country with the Academy Award winning Chris Overton and the BAFTA award winning Caroline Barleet speaking at the festival.

The Thing / Blade Runner
To celebrate the 40th anniversary release of these classic films, we will be having an audience vote to select which film will be screened at this years festival.

Tuesday 8 November 2022 – 7pm
Flux Gourmet
Set at an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas, and gastrointestinal disorders.

Wednesday 9 November 2022 – 7pm
Girls Girls Girls
Three young women try to defy the persistent winter darkness in Finland. In the process, they move between dreams, reality, friendship and relationships, and try to make sense of the whole mess.

Thursday 10 November 2022 – 7pm
Vesper
After the collapse of Earth’s ecosystem, Vesper, a 13-year-old girl struggling to survive with her paralysed father, meets a woman with a secret who will force her to use her wits, strengths and bio-hacking abilities to fight for the possibility of having a future.

Friday 11 November 2022 – 7.30pm
Silent Land
A perfect couple rents a holiday home on a sunny Italian island. The reality does not live up to their expectations when they find out the pool is broken. Ignorant of the fact that the island faces water shortage, they ask for someone to fix it. The constant presence of a stranger starts a chain of events, which makes them act instinctively and irrationally, heading to the darkest place in their relationship.

Deborah Moggach The Art of Storytelling
Writers Guild Award winning and BAFTA nominated screenwriter Deborah Moggach OBE FRSL will be speaking about her career, adapting her own work for film and TV, adapting ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘The Diary of Ann Frank’ for the screen and having her own work adapted such as ‘These Foolish Things’ which made into ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’.

Saturday 12 November 2022 – 3pm
Mike Leigh 50 Years of Filmmaking
Palme d’Or recipient Mike Leigh OBE FRSL will discuss his 50 years in filmmaking including his array of critically acclaimed work, his experience across five decades in the industry, and his approach to bringing stories about ordinary working class people to life on screen.

Saturday 12 November 2022 – 6pm
Anthony Fabian Making Your First Feature
Award winning producer and director of ‘Mrs Harris Goes to Paris’ Anthony Fabian will discuss and take questions on making your first feature film. Anthony has made feature films in the UK, the US and South Africa and his first feature ‘Skin’ won numerous awards.
