Sparky at SparkWrite reviews Screw Loose Improv, staged at the Headgate Theatre.

This was the first improv show I had ever watched. I was sceptical because I knew that improvisation could be quite unpredictable and, if not executed well, could easily spiral into chaos with a single misstep. However, Screw Loose Improv transformed my doubts into pure laughter and enjoyment! The performers’ quick wit and seamless teamwork turned what I expected to be disorder into an unforgettable evening filled with joy and unexpected brilliance.

The show’s premise was so creative, featuring a bunch of convicts fighting for their freedom through improv. Gary Turner excelled as The Warden, delivering a powerful performance that perfectly captured the character’s authority.  I watched the second performance of this show, and as soon as the show started, I found myself laughing uncontrollably. The humour was so infectious that I struggled to catch my breath between fits of giggles. Every joke landed perfectly, and the clever timing of the performers had me in absolute stitches. I can’t emphasise enough just how much joy and laughter this performance brought me.

Without a predetermined script, each moment of the performance unfolded with a delightful unpredictability that kept me on the edge of my seat. Every time an improviser spoke, I found myself completely caught off guard, their wit and creativity flowing seamlessly. The ensemble of improvisers displayed exceptional talent, resulting in a captivating and brilliantly executed performance.

One intriguing detail I noticed while absorbing the comedic show was the subtle yet effective oversight of the director (Richard Bland). He used a small bell as his instrument of control, using it to signal the end of one scene and smoothly usher in the next. This clever technique allowed him to gently steer the performance; if any moment on stage threatened to become jarring or repetitive, a timely ring of the bell would prompt a transition. The combination of their raw talent and his understated direction created a captivating experience that kept both the performers and the audience engaged and on their toes.

Overall, this show was absolutely hilarious and filled to the brim with high energy and impeccable talent. It was absolutely amazing, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
