9.29°C Colchester United Football Club has joined forces with Keep Colchester Cool to provide live music outside the Weston Homes Community Stadium prior to selected home matches this season.
Kicking off the project before the Carlisle game on Friday, 27th August 2010, is Housework, a five-piece funk outfit from Colchester, Essex, who have caused quite a stir in the burgeoning local music scene over the past year. Armed with an arsenal of original material, Pete, Paul, Richard, Matt and Geoff have made it their mission to bring funk back to the masses.
Their sound is rooted in funk, soul, jazz and blues, and this certainly shines through. However, they inject additional clout with rock guitar riffs and powerful solos, backed by hard yet sensitive beats. Musically, Housework gravitates between the smooth funk of Jamiroquai and the edgy funk rock of early Red Hot Chilli Peppers — both significant influences on their music.
Earlier this month, Housework’s track ‘The Fire’ was aired on BBC 6 Music’s Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show. Reviewers have drawn comparisons to the likes of James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, describing their “funky vintage soulful sound” as “classic and timeless”, and stating that “there is nothing like this in the Essex local music scene”. Housework are definitely one to watch.
Colchester United Media Manager Matt Hudson said: “We were keen to improve an already popular matchday experience here at the stadium, and inviting the best of local music seemed a great way of not only giving our fans a little extra, but also giving local bands the chance to spread the word about the great music they’re producing.”
Ben Howard, founder of Keep Colchester Cool, added: “There are some great plans at the stadium for future music events, so I was delighted to put some bands forward as it’s a brilliant new way to showcase the Colchester music scene.”
The PA and sound engineering on the night will be provided by DND Audio, a Colchester-based company specialising in production management, sound engineering, sound design and musical production within the events industry, including conferences, theatre productions, festivals and concerts.
