OFCOM have announced today that Colne Radio has been awarded an FM Community Radio Licence.
The Wivenhoe-based station now has a maximum of two years to start broadcasting, and they will hold the licence for five years.
Colne Radio will serve communities along the River Colne in north eastern Essex, centred on the town of Wivenhoe. Ofcom’s Broadcast Licensing Committee (BLC) considered that Colne Radio’s experience of broadcasting online, the previous broadcasting and other relevant experience of group members, and its reasonable financial proposals for set-up and year one, demonstrated its ability to maintain the service.
The BLC noted the service’s community focus and recognised that Colne Radio had strong links to the local community through its work with local voluntary organisations and the University of Essex. The committee also noted that the station’s experience in delivering training suggested its volunteer training would be of a high standard, and that it proposed good levels of accountability to the community.
