Back for its second year, the Roman Festival celebrates all things Romano-British here in Britain’s first capital, Camulodunum, now a city again. Held a stone’s throw from the site of the Temple of Claudius, top reenactors Britannia, The Vicus, and The Ermine Street Guard plus our local Colchester Roman Society, will bring the ancient world to life with gladiatorial combat, living history displays, and military pomp. Chat with experts from the Roman Circus Centre, the Castle Museum, and the Archaeological Trust or meet major writers of the Roman world in the Books Tent, including Lindsey Davis, creator of the Falco mysteries.

There’s plenty of fun for children too, from crafting to dressing up to playing Roman board games, and room to picnic on the wide choice of food and drink on offer (including mead and – dear to the Romans’ hearts – oysters.)
